CHELTENHAM FESTIVAL REVIEW: vintage week linked Coneygree and Willie Mullins with magical memories of Dawn Run
Dispatch - almost 2 years
One of the most endearing assets of the Cheltenham Festival is that, as the years roll on, its feats and fables create a veritable treasure-trove of memories. Festival veterans will tell you that one of the most unforgettable days was Thursday 13th March 1986. Yes, it was the day ‘The Sun’ ran its most famous front-page headline, ‘Freddie Starr Ate My Hamster’. But the back pages were adorned by the mercurial mare Dawn Run, who became the first, and remains the only, horse to land the Gold Cup/Champion Hurdle double. Even racing enthusiasts who weren’t there that day cannot fail to have been enchanted at some point in their lives by the sound, from the TV commentary vaults, of Peter O’Sullevan screaming: “And the mare’s gonna get up!.....” Consequently, few at the 2015 Festival last week can be excused for recalling Dawn Run’s glory day 39 years ago. For in CONEYGREE, wonderful winner of the Betfred Gold Cup, we had a horse of similarly limited fencing experience and boasting simil ...

UK bookmakers suffer as Premier League soccer's top seven triumph
Yahoo News - about 3 years
By Keith Weir LONDON, Jan 14 (Reuters) - Britain's bookmakers were left nursing losses totalling up to 30 million pounds ($49 million) on Tuesday after the top seven teams in English soccer's Premier League all won their latest round of matches. "This is as bad a weekend as there's ever been," said Ladbrokes spokesman Ciaran O'Brien, while William Hill compared the impact to when jockey Frankie Dettori rode seven winners at a race meeting at Ascot in 1996. League leaders Arsenal beat Aston Villa 2-1 on Monday night to ensure that all of the leading teams down to Manchester United in seventh place clinched victories. Ladbrokes estimated that the cost to bookmakers was more than 20 million pounds, while rival Coral put the total bill at 30 million.

Royal Ascot joy turns to tears for Cecil stable
Fox News - over 3 years
Royal Ascot week ended on a sombre note on Saturday when Thomas Chippendale collapsed and died soon after passing the winning post in the Hardwicke Stakes. The joy of victory soon turned to despair for connections of the four-year-old colt, who was owned by Robert Ogden and trained by the late training legend Henry Cecil's widow Jane Cecil. "It's so awful to go from one emotion to another, from a high to a low. It puts such a dampener on the day," said Cecil. "My heart is pounding, but we have to carry on." Jockey Johnny Murtagh sensed something was amiss and dismounted from Thomas Chippendale within strides of crossing the finishing line. Veterinarians were quickly on hand but could do nothing to save the horse. The suspected cause was a heart attack. "I felt him wobble underneath me and jumped off him," Murtagh said. "Then he lost his balance and went down. It is heart-breaking for everyone involved; he ran his heart out." In a separate incident, the favourite, Ektihaam, slip ...

Doyle produces royal display at Ascot
Fox News - over 3 years
Jockey James Doyle had not ridden a winner at Royal Ascot until Wednesday but the 25-year-old Englishman made up for it in style with a superb treble in front of an admiring Queen Elizabeth II to boot. Inspired by a textbook ride to win the Group One Prince Of Wales's Sakes aboard Al Kazeem, Doyle coaxed a recalcitrant Belgian Bill to victory in the Royal Hunt Cup before setting Rizeena alight in the Queen Mary Stakes. Not since Frankie Dettori landed his magnificent seven in 1996 has the royal racecourse bowed to the talents of a youthful sorcerer in the saddle. "It has been amazing," said Doyle. "It is what you aspire to when you are growing up, so it makes me very happy to be standing here after a day like today. I still haven't taken it all in and I suspect it will be some time before I do. It is what you dream about." Doyle served up his piece de resistance in the Prince Of Wales's Stakes after Paul Hanagan threatened to steal the day's feature race. When Hanagan kicked for ...

Heidi Montag And Spencer Pratt Are Back!
Huffington Post - about 4 years
They're ba-ack! For better or worse, everybody's favorite people to hate, Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt, are back on television -- across the pond, that is. The former "Hills" stars and married couple made their British debut as the American housemates on the U.K. reality show "Celebrity Big Brother," which premiered Thursday night. Among Speidi's 10 colorful new roommates are Ryan Clark, Frankie Dettori and Paula Hamilton, though whatever high jinks may happen in this 24-hour-surveillance house surely can't be worse than shacking up with Pratt's parents. Or can it? "We've heard lots of names and seen lots of photos -- some of them will be horrifying. It's going to be hard because I really don't like other people. I'm ready to get in there. I'm ready to do battle. It's on," Pratt, ever the antagonist, said on the show. "We definitely want to win. My game plan is to make everyone just want to quit and leave." In October, Montag admitted that she had squandered over $1 ...
