Giving Voice to Grief
Huffington Post - over 1 year
Todd Arky, a successful entrepreneur (perhaps best known for co-founding Seamless) is trying to change the conversation - or lack thereof - around loss and bereavement. Todd lost his own father at age 12. In the cloud of grief, when so much else felt numb, his father's best friend gave him the kind of support he so very much needed. Todd remembers vividly when Bruce told him that "he was exactly the same age when his [own] father died and that this would be really tough, but I would be okay." Most importantly for Todd, "his common loss gave me a real sense of strength." In finding another person with whom to share in the grief and open up about his own, Todd was indeed able to emerge with strength from the grieving process. It also made him want to become a person like Bruce for others who had lost loved ones. It goes without saying that no two people grieve in the same way. Everyone's needs are different at a time of loss, as are everyone's emotions. But in giving voice to one's ...

Dave Hollander: I Wish I Was the Anna Kournikova of Anything
Huffington Post Sports - over 3 years
"What I love about the WNBA is that there are women who dunk." Paula Madison, CEO Los Angeles Sparks "I don't think selling sex is ever going to be outdated. It's like when people say breasts are in or breasts are out. Our breasts are never going to be out." -Gabrielle Reece, Former Pro Beach Volleyball Player. from Branded, an ESPN Films/espnW Nine for IX Documentary, Dir. by Rachel Grady and Heidi Ewing. I've been asking my sports marketing students for years "What does it mean when a female athlete is referred to as the 'Anna Kournikova of their sport?'" The answer I get: "That means the female athlete is not that good at her sport but she's well known because she's so good looking." "That's right," I say, then I progress further in our colloquy; master of the Socratic Method that I am. "And why is it that 'Anna Kournikova' should be the name for this distinction?" The answer I get: "Because she promoted her looks while she was not actually a very good ten ...

Gabrielle Reece: What I've Learned About Getting Older
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
In an excerpt from her new memoir, My Foot Is Too Big for the Glass Slipper, former pro volleyball player Gabrielle Reece takes a page from a male friend and says to hell with pining for her youth. By Gabrielle Reece Not long ago I showed up for a magazine shoot and the photographer, upon seeing me, stopped in his tracks, widened his eyes, threw open his arms, and exclaimed, "Gabrielle, I am amazed at how good you still look." He's a genuinely nice person in a field filled with sometimes not-so-nice people, and it's possible he regretted that tiny word still the second it tumbled out of his mouth. So he went on to overcompensate, praising the state of my skin ("even though you've spent so much time in the sun") and my figure ("even though you've had two kids"). He meant well, and yet every sentence he uttered dead-ended in the same place: I can rock a magazine spread with the help of Photoshop, but I am not the hot-ta-ta boffo babe I once was. I am, like everyone e ...

Gabrielle Reece Opens Up About 'Submissiveness' Comment
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
The beach's tannest and most enviable couple -- pro-volleyball player Gabrielle Reece and surfing superstar Laird Hamilton -- have been married for 17 years. They have two daughters together and one teenage daughter from Laird's first marriage. Reece recently wrote a memoir titled "My Foot Is Too Big For The Glass Slipper," about her marriage, the couple's misses and failures, as well as their most cherished lessons on living happily together and how it make it all work. But one statement in the book set off a firestorm of media reaction last month. Reece wrote, “to truly be feminine means being soft, receptive, and –- look out, here it comes –- submissive.” HuffPost LA spoke with Reece on the phone from her home in Kauai, Hawaii, to find out if she still stands by her submissiveness statement, how she got into a scuffle with Katie Couric and why fairy tales aren't meant to come true. Gabrielle Reece, Laird Hamilton's Wife, Says Being 'Submissive' Is A Sign Of Strength (VIDEO)
The Huffington Post - almost 4 years
Volleyball star Gabrielle Reece and pro surfer Laird Hamilton have been married for 17 years, and Reece recently revealed the controversial secret to their successful relationship: creating an "old fashioned" dynamic. In appearances on the "Today" show and "Rock Center With Brian Williams" Friday, Reece explained that she and Hamilton considered divorcing after four years of marriage. But their relationship improved when they learned how to complement each other by adopting more traditional gender roles. “I think the idea of living with a partner is ‘How can I make their life better?'" Reece told "Today's" Natalie Morales. “So if I’m the woman and he’s the man, then yes, that’s the dynamic. I’m willing and I choose to serve my family and my husband because it creates a dynamic where he is then in fact acting more like a man and masculine and treating me the way I want to be treated."
