Activists Counter Westboro's Anti-Gay Hate With Peace Rally
Huffington Post - over 3 years
When the Siouxland Pride Alliance heard that the anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church was planning to protest the appointment of a gay man to a Sioux City commission, the group decided to hold a demonstration of its own: a "peace rally" in a nearby park. Members of the Topeka, Kan.-based Westboro Baptist Church came to the Iowa city on Monday to picket the city council's appointment of Scott Raasch, a gay man, to the city's Human Rights Commission. While some members of the community held a counterprotest across the street from the Westboro picketers, the Siouxland Pride Alliance decided to ignore the anti-gay protesters all together and hold an event on their own in Sioux City's Cook Park. Karen Mackey, who sits on the city's human rights commission and is a founding member of the pride alliance, said approximately 300 people gathered at the peace party. "I did not give them the benefit of [a counterprotest]," she told the Sioux City Journal. "I was at the park the ...

Music Review: Gary Lewis and The Playboys - The Complete Liberty Singles
Seattle Pi - over 4 years
Music Review: Gary Lewis and The Playboys - The Complete Liberty Singles Seattle Post-Intelligencer Copyright 2012 Seattle Post-Intelligencer. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed. Published 11:18 a.m., Wednesday, November 21, 2012 "The Playboys" were Allan Ramsay, David Costello, David Walker, and John West. Because they relinquished their garage band playing to the expertise of renowned session players for the recording of "This Diamond Ring", and Lewis' lead vocals were made velvety smooth by blending them into session vocalist Ron Hicklin's voice (singer of countless TV commercial jingles and the "voice" of those wonderful Partridge Family records) Gary Lewis and The Playboys were as artificial as the corporate-controlled "The Monkees" (who amazingly were the headlining act to Jimi Hendrix in 1967). While they mock-played their instruments to pre-recorded music on TV's showcase ...

Music Review: Gary Lewis and the Playboys - Complete Liberty Singles Seattle Post-Intelligencer Copyright 2012 Seattle Post-Intelligencer. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed. Published 10:08 a.m., Sunday, October 14, 2012 Turns out, Lewis had eight gold singles in all, 17 Top 40 hits, and four gold albums all within two years. [...] it was really all over except for the nostalgia circuit and reissues like Complete Liberty Singles. In the main, Lewis' legacy, as demonstrated on this collection, is wholesome, poppy, formulaic teen idol bubblegum. [...] Lewis sings that "happiness" is an ice cream soda, peanut butter, and kisses with his girl. [...] reflecting the times, the early singles had B-sides that were studio Playboy instrumentals (Hard To Find, Tijuana Wedding), sounding much like tracks recorded for films or TV shows that needed groovy background music.

Film About Legendary Session Musicians Coming to Bridge Street
Canton Patch - over 4 years
The Wrecking Crew film has been in the can since 2008, when it premiered at the South by Southwest film festival. It's the story of the legendary Los Angeles session musicians who played, uncredited, on hundreds of hits by artists including The Beach Boys, The Monkees, Simon & Garfunkel and the Mamas and the Papas. Produced by Denny Tedesco (son of Wrecking Crew guitarist Tommy Tedesco, who died of cancer in 1997), the film is being held up over music clearances — the 132 song fragments that appear in the film. Until he raises the money to secure these rights, Tedesco is in fundraising mode, bringing the film to festivals and screenings while he negotiates the labyrinth of labels and publishers who control the songs. These showings are typically in big cities where the big dollars are found, but on Sunday, the film comes to Bridge Street Live in Collinsville for a 2 p.m. screening. The connection is Jonathan Greenfield, who is Ronnie Spector's husband. Greenfield is good friend ...

Pine Brook Man Wants Wegmans on Rt. 46
Montville Patch - almost 5 years
Brent Jerolimic already knows the first things he would buy if a Wegmans grocery store opened in Montville: grass-fed beef and "one of their amazing signature fresh baked desserts." Jerolimic, 33, has started a petition in hopes that he can attract the chain store, which has stores throughout the northeast according to its website, to the G.I. Auto Salvage Co. site at Route 46 and Old Bloomfield Avenue where Lowe's was considering placing a store in 2011. Lowe's pulled the plug on the project, which included a 137,000-square-foot store and garden center, in August, the same week as the company announced the closing of seven stores. Jerolimic said reading about Lowe's' decision not to build a store at the site prompted him to consider what would best serve Pine Brook residents in that location. And on Friday, he decided to take action by starting an online petition, reaching out to Mayor Tim Braden and sending a letter to Wegmans management. Jerolimic said he is very familiar w ...

His career was put on hold when he entered the U.S. Army as a draftee in January 1967, and he served during the Vietnam War Era and was stationed overseas with the Eighth Army in Seoul, South Korea to 1968.
More Details Hide Details Lewis has expressed that he was reluctant to go to Vietnam, but he credits the Army with being the time when he "grew up." He returned to performing and recording but did not recapture his earlier success and five releases by the band that year peaked from 13th to 39th. His musical career was later marketed as a "nostalgia act" with appearances (continuing) on his father's Labor Day Telethons for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. In January 2012, Lewis released a new single, "You Can't Go Back". He appeared uncredited in his father's film The Nutty Professor (1963). He also appeared in a credited role singing "The Land of La-la-la" with his father in Rock-A-Bye Baby (1958), where he played Jerry Lewis as a boy. He also was seen in the movie The Family Jewels.

More Details Hide Details Besides The Lovin' Spoonful, the group was the only artist during the 1960s to have its first seven Hot 100 releases each reach that chart's Top 10. In addition to "This Diamond Ring", his hits include "Count Me In" (the only non-British Commonwealth record in the Hot 100's Top 10 on May 8, 1965 at #2), "Save Your Heart for Me" (#2), "Everybody Loves a Clown" (#4), "She's Just My Style" (#3), "Sure Gonna Miss Her" (#9), and "Green Grass" (#8). Of "Everybody Loves a Clown", Lewis says he composed the song as a gift for his father's birthday. He believed the song was too good, so instead of giving it as a gift, he recorded it.
"This Diamond Ring", hitting number one on Billboard magazine's Hot 100 chart on February 20, 1965, made Lewis an instant star.

  • 1960
    Age 13
He received a set of drums as a gift for his 14th birthday in 1960.
More Details Hide Details When he was 18, Lewis formed what would become Gary Lewis & the Playboys (then known as "Gary and the Playboys") with four other friends. Joking at the lateness of bandmates to practice, Lewis referred to them as "playboys", and the name stuck. Lewis was the drummer, but at that time singing duties were held by guitarist Dave Walker. As the band started, Gary's mother was quietly funding the purchases of equipment, as they believed Gary's father would not have supported the band. This could explain why, even though he lived down the street from the Lewis family, producer Snuff Garrett wasn't aware of Gary's band until a mutual friend, conductor Lou Brown, informed him that the band was playing at Disneyland and that Garrett should give them a listen. Seeing an opportunity to capitalize on the Lewis name, Garrett put Lewis' band into the studio to develop, still with the finances of Lewis' mother. Garrett pushed Lewis to improve his drumming skill, even getting Buddy Rich to tutor him, and, more importantly, made Lewis the singer, and therefore the focal point of the group. By Lewis' own admission, his natural singing voice was not one of his strengths, and this led Garrett to employ vocal overdubbing tricks in the studio, to enhance it.
