Why 'Sneaky Pete' co-creator Bryan Cranston and star Giovanni Ribisi can relate to the con
LATimes - about 1 month
Awards show acceptance speeches can sometimes be dull or uninspired; they can be emotional and impassioned; they can even provoke a tweet from the president-elect. But very few — in fact, just one — become the launching pad for a TV series on Amazon Prime. That’s where Bryan Cranston comes in. ...

'Billy On The Street' Parodies Leah Remini's Escape From Scientology
Huffington Post - about 1 year
Billy Eichner takes aim at Scientology on the new episode of "Billy on the Street" with hilarious results. In a game he likes to call "Leah Remini's Escape From Scientology," referencing the "King of Queens" actress' very public break with the controversial religion, Eichner enlists comedian Rachel Dratch to navigate his latest pop culture-themed obstacle course. In the first few obstacles, Eichner parodies the process of joining Scientology -- signing a billion-year contract, marrying Giovanni Ribisi's gay cousin, etc. The rest of the course demonstrates how one would publicly escape the religion "to save your kids, save your friends, and, most importantly, save your acting career." Our favorite moment? Dratch freeing the towel-clad men stuck in John Travolta's shed. Genius. Also on HuffPost: -- This feed and its contents are the property of The Huffington Post, and use is subject to our terms. The 10 Worst TV Role Models of 2013
Huffington Post - over 3 years
By Sierra Filucci, Common Sense Media TV editor From Abby Lee Miller to Walter White, TV is full of wild and crazy characters who make us laugh, cry, or grit our teeth in frustration. Each year, Common Sense Media calls out the TV characters and personalities who have the most and least to offer kids and families. You'll see some familiar faces on the "worst" list (the Kardashians, for the third year in a row) and a few newbies, who may or may not stand the test of TV time. Even with all the new devices competing for kids' attention, regular old TV still dominates kids' screen time. That means all the characters they watch or otherwise absorb through popular culture make a big impact on kids' still-forming identities. But even the worst role models can help you start important discussions with kids about what is and isn't appropriate behavior. These talks can also help your kid become more media-savvy. Discuss the reasons why these folks get so much attention. Who makes the decisio ...

'Dads' Gets Full Season Pickup
Huffington Post - over 3 years
LOS ANGELES — LOS ANGELES (AP) — Fox says it's ordering a full season of the new comedy "Dads," which came under early fire by critics. The series is about two best friends and business partners whose fathers move in. It stars Seth Green, Giovanni Ribisi, Peter Riegert and Martin Mull. An additional nine episodes were ordered for a total of 22 half-hours, Fox announced Friday. The pilot episode of "Dads" was slammed by critics as crass, sexist and exploiting racial stereotypes, and producers promised a change in tone. Seth MacFarlane, the creator of Fox's animated comedy "Family Guy," is among the producers of "Dads." Fox Entertainment Chairman Kevin Reilly cited the show's appeal to young adult viewers in announcing the additional episodes, calling it "an asset we can grow." The show airs on Tuesday.

The Tuesday Playlist: Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Dads Premiere; Covert Affairs, Suits Depart
Seattle Pi - over 3 years
Even gifted veterans like Martin Mull and Peter Riegert, as obnoxiously exasperating parents who move in with their dismally unpleasant business-partner sons (a flip Seth Green and whiny Giovanni Ribisi), can't do much to elevate material that in the pilot episode (Tuesday, 8/7c) fancies itself shocking when it stoops to racially insensitive humor - and in next week's second episode, falls back on the tired cliché of everyone acting goofy when stoned on pot brownies. Whereas Brooklyn Nine-Nine (8:30/7:30c), a police comedy that aspires to the humanistic grit and heart of a Barney Miller, earns its badge of distinction with smart irreverence and sharply defined characters in an admirably diverse ensemble, led by Saturday Night Live ex-pat Andy Samberg as Jake Peralta, the precinct cut-up who's actually a first-rate detective, and the estimable Andre Braugher proving a deft hand at subtle comedy as the Nine-Nine's deadpan new captain Ray Holt, whose intriguing back story makes him mu ...

Top 10 Reasons We Loved the X-Files
Huffington Post - over 3 years
Today marks the 20th year anniversary of the premiere of the spooky sci-fi cult classic, The X-Files. The lead actors, David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, along with creators and directors like Chris Carter, reunited this summer at Comic Con in San Diego to wax poetic on the years they had together. The show ran for nine seasons and 202 episodes, becoming a mainstream hit, winning awards, and going on to produce two feature films, and forever embedding itself into the hearts of millions of fans (including this author, who would give her right arm to melt into David Duchovny's monotone). It was a brilliant show that pushed boundaries and gender stereotypes, tapped into that great American fear of government conspiracy and alien invasion, and delivered a new kind of boogie man every Sunday night. Here's a Top 10 list, in my particular order, of why this show was so awesome. 10. Seriously Creepy TV -- I like to be scared by television in the same way that I like to be scared by rolle ...

Is "Dads" the Year's Most Racist Sitcom?
Mother Jones - over 3 years
"Well, you're lucky your dads are American; my dad beat me with a math book 'til I was 16," says Veronica, an Asian American character (played by Brenda Song) on the upcoming Fox sitcom Dads. The new series (executive produced by Seth MacFarlane of Family Guy, American Dad!, and Ted fame) premieres on September 17, but it has already generated controversy for its comic portrayal of Asian Americans and the Chinese. The show focuses on two founders of a video game company, and how they deal with their intrusive fathers. Comedy supposedly ensues, some of it at the expense of Asian folk. In the pilot episode, the main characters (played by Seth Green and Giovanni Ribisi) insist that Veronica dress up like a "sexy Asian schoolgirl"—one who giggles like a Japanese teenage stereotype—in order to impress a group of Chinese investors. Chinese people are mocked and declared untrustworthy. The "Asian men have tiny dicks" stereotype is gleefully deployed. The term "Oriental" is used because…f ...

Fox Refuses to Reshoot Dads Pilot Despite Plea From Asian-American Group
Seattle Pi - over 3 years
Check out all the must-see new shows The Dads pilot, which premieres Tuesday, Sept. 17, features numerous "racial and sexual stereotypes," including business partners (Seth Green, Giovanni Ribisi) having Brenda Song's character to dress up like a sexy Asian schoolgirl in order to sway Chinese businessmen and Martin Mull's character referring to Asians as "Orientals." Asian-American group asks Fox's Dads to reshoot racist scenes Fox executives also said, The series is based heavily on the executive producers' own lives, and the relationships between the fathers and sons on Dads will continue to be the main driver of show's comedic sensibility. Considering the consistent feedback from our community and television critics in general - and the creators saying they hadn't properly defined their characters nor gotten used to their actors when they shot that first episode - this sounds like a no-brainer.

'Dads' EP Admits Some Jokes Need Tweaking
Huffington Post - over 3 years
The cast and executive producers of "Dads," a new Fox comedy executive produced by Seth MacFarlane, faced quite a few questions about the racist and questionable jokes in the show's pilot. On Thursday, reporters at the Television Critics Association Summer 2013 press tour pressed the cast and crew about the direction and tone of the show, which stars Martin Mull, Peter Riegert, Brenda Song, Vanessa Lachey, Giovanni Ribisi and Seth Green. "In the pilot, we noticed some things we'd like to change or tweak moving forward," executive producer Alec Sulkin said of the episode sent to critics for screening, which has an Asian woman (Song) dressed up in a Sailor Moon-like anime outfit for the lead characters' (Ribisi and Green) potential business clients. "If we missed the mark in the pilot, we're trying to hit it better in upcoming shows." Green noted that many of the best shows in TV history were "provocative" and "offensive." But in an earlier panel, Fox's president of e ...

Darryl Woodard: Outland Sci-Fi Remake, What's The Hold Up?
Huffington Post - over 3 years
In just the past few weeks I've found out the classic science fiction film Outland was slated for a remake. Then afterwards I checked further info about the remake of the film that starred Sean Connery, which all pertaining articles seeming to corroborate two facts. One, that Director Michael Davis who directed Shoot 'Em Up with Clive Owen was to helm the sci-fi remake as mentioned in the article, SHOOT 'EM UP's Michael Davis to Direct OUTLAND Remake by Charles Mihelich. And two, all sources of info that originally announced the remake were all seemingly dated on August 19, 2009, coming up on four years ago! Which now has to make me wonder, has Michael Davis been channeling his inner Stanley Kubrick? The late legendary Director Stanley Kubrick is to this day well known for directing long film shoots. A good example is the classic sci-fi film he directed, 2001: A Space Odyssey. Originally titled Journey Beyond The Stars in a press release for MGM on February 23, 1965, the sc ...

Giovanni Ribisi Is Heading Back To TV
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
Giovanni Ribisi has replaced Tommy Dewey in Fox's multicamera comedy "Dads," Deadline reports. The six-episode series was created by Seth MacFarlane, Alec Sulkin and Wellesley Wild, the team behind "Ted" (in which Ribisi also starred). The comedy is centered around Warner (Ribisi) and Eli (Seth Green), two successful men whose lives are thrown into disarray when their high maintenance fathers (played by Martin Mull and Peter Riegert) move in with them. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the role was reimagined after the pilot taping last week, and Ribisi was apparently a better fit than Dewey. The character is described as "co-owner of a successful video game company and a family man with a wife and two young children." The role of Warner's wife was also recast, with Vanessa Lachey taking over from Erin Pineda following the table read. Ribisi's best known TV roles include his stint on "Friends" as Phoebe's kooky brother Frank Jr., and Ralph Mariano on "My Name is ...
