What The Super Bowl Commercials Mean For Nonprofits
Huffington Post - 7 days
Did you watch the Super Bowl? Even if you hate Tom Brady (great name), sports, and chips and dip or any combination of those three that game was hard not to like (and if you do hate all three of those then we just shouldn't be friends). The greatest quarterback of all time (notice the lack of 'arguably') leads one of the greatest teams of all time (in their era) to the greatest Super Bowl comeback of all time (perhaps any postseason ever) in the first-ever overtime game. Seriously. This was something we've never seen before where Brady's Patriots had a 99.7 percent chance of losing as late as 6 minutes left in the third quarter. I have a better chance of marrying Tom Brady's Brazilian supermodel wife Gisele Bündchen than the Patriots did in winning that game. And I'm happily married. And so is she. It was an amazing game and story to witness. Oh yeah, Lady Gaga jumped off the roof too. Well sort of. Wait, Lady Gaga seriously jumped from the roof pic.twitter.com/Io5SxY4l0i ...

These Abandoned Buildings Are Adorned With Stunning Portraits Of Women
Huffington Post - 2 months
For Architectural Digest, by Sara Tardiff. There are few artists whose work you are just as likely to encounter in a gallery as you are walking down the street. Melbourne artist Rone got his start painting stylized, larger-than-life portraits of women not on canvases but in abandoned buildings and other unexpected surfaces around his home city. With more than ten years of work in the industry, Rone is now recognized worldwide, exhibiting in the National Gallery of Australia, collaborating with the likes of Jean-Paul Gautier and showing in galleries from London to San Francisco (and everywhere in between). His haunting paintings are an examination of the synergetic relationship between beauty and decay, installing stunning portraits in spaces that are often ravaged by nature and time. His most recent exhibition, "Empty," took place this past October in the historic Fitzroy building in Melbourne, which is due to be torn down in the coming weeks. Rone fully embraces the fleeting nature o ...

A Look Into The NYC That Was Never Built
Huffington Post - 3 months
For Architectural Digest, by Nick Mafi. It's almost impossible to imagine New York City without such landmarks as Central Park. Yet, were it not for a mid-19th-century bill enacted by the state legislature calling for more than 750 acres to be allocated for the grounds, New Yorkers would've never been able to experience the spoils of the iconic park. But what about other would-be landmarks that, for reasons political or other, were never realized in New York City? The new book Never Built New York (Metropolis Books, 2016) explores that very topic. Included in this tome are unbuilt projects such as a beautiful Park Avenue skyscraper by Zaha Hadid; a design for Brooklyn’s Dodger Stadium that featured a giant dome to shield players and fans from the rain; an airport perched on steel columns 200 feet above street level, spanning from 24th to 71st Street and Ninth Avenue to the Hudson River; and many others. "The drawings in this book . . . are for me not a compendium of nostalgia, re ...

Interview: Al Gore on commiserating with Hillary, fake news, and Trump's climate views
Yahoo News - 3 months
Imagine being a fly on this wall: Former vice president Al Gore commiserated with Hillary Clinton about her unexpected presidential election loss, he told Mashable in a recent interview.  On the election, if there is anyone who can empathize with Clinton's predicament, it's Gore—the only other living person who earned more popular votes while also losing the Electoral College, and therefore, the presidency, when he ran in 2000 against George W. Bush.  Hillary Clinton, right, accompanied by former Vice President Al Gore, left, takes the stage for a rally in Miami, Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2016. Image: andrew harnik/ap “I spoke to her in general terms after the election, just because of our relationship, and just commiserated with her," Gore told Mashable in an interview on Sunday. The former vice-president, a vocal proponent of Clinton during the 2016 election, also campaigned for her in Florida, Colorado and other key states over the last year. My Journey Through The Amazon With The Team Of 'Years Of Living Dangerously'
Huffington Post - 3 months
Over the course of ten days in June 2016, I traveled to the Brazilian Amazon to film an episode for “Years Of Living Dangerously,” the National Geographic documentary series about climate change. June 1: Cristalino Eco-Lodge, Cristalino State Park, Mato Grosso State, Brazil Today was not my typical workday. It was over 95 degrees, humid, and I was following a man holding a machete that I had never met into the jungle. My outfit included padded shin guards to protect me from snakebites. As I walked, the former miner-turned-environmentalist guide named Francisco was giving me a quick safety briefing: don’t veer off the path, don’t go in the nearby river with open cuts and don’t feed the monkeys, no matter how cute. “Why can’t I swim with open cuts?” I asked. “Because open cuts can get infected ...

5 Memorable Haunted Houses Of Classic Horror Movies
Huffington Post - 4 months
For Architectural Digest, by Elizabeth Stamp. While nothing is quite as scary as the murderous or supernatural characters in horror movies, often the settings can come very close. Directors such as John Carpenter and Wes Craven have long had a knack for choosing locations, particularly houses, that provide the perfect backdrop for murder and mayhem. Many of the homes, such as Frank Lloyd Wright’s Ennis House, are either famous in their own right or iconic thanks to their time on the big screen. As Halloween approaches, AD looks back at the homes from some of the most popular horror movies of all time. Her name is Gisele Bundchen—known to all as Gisele—and she is the most celebrated Brazilian since Pele. First introduced by designer Alexander McQueen two years ago, Gisele, now 20, is the world's top cover girl, taking to more than 1,600 catwalks and earning a reported $7,000 an hour.
