Is Girls’ Generation the outcome of the Pleistocene mind?
Discover Magazine - about 4 years
There’s an excellent paper up at Cell right now, Modeling Recent Human Evolution in Mice by Expression of a Selected EDAR Variant. It synthesizes genomics, computational modeling, as well as the effective execution of mouse models to explore non-pathological phenotypic variation in humans. It was likely due the last element that this paper, which pushes the boundary on human evolutionary genomics, found its way to Cell (and the “impact factor” of course). The focus here is on EDAR, a locus you may have heard of before. By fiddling with the EDAR locus researchers had earlier created “Asian mice.” More specifically, mice which exhibit a set of phenotypes which are known to distinguish East Asians from other populations, specifically around hair form and skin gland development. More generally EDAR is implicated in development of ectodermal tissues. That’s a very broad purview, so it isn’t surprising that modifying this locus results in a host of phenotypic changes.
China Worker - over 4 years
(RMT -National Union of Rail, Marit ...

China purges media corruption ahead of key congress
China Media Project - over 4 years
China’s State Administration of Radio Film and Television (SARFT), the government office charged with regulation and control of broadcast media and film, announced today that it was launching a three-month nationwide campaign to “combat news extortion and clean up paid-for news.” According to a news release posted to SARFT’s official website today, a notice on the campaign was sent out to broadcast authorities at the provincial level on June 13. The news release on the action cites specifically the need to “create a favorable climate for the successful opening of the Party’s 18th National Congress” later this year. The action, which was apparently coordinated by the Central Propaganda Department, also involves the General Administration of Press and Publications, the office that controls and regulates print media — suggesting this is a unified national program affecting all media. Both news extortion (in which media use the threat of supposed investigative reporting to pressure r ...

Immune to political repercussions because of her fame, Gong Li began criticizing the censorship policy in China. Regarding the sexual content in Ju Dou, Chinese censorship deemed the film "a bad influence on the physical and spiritual health of young people."

In many of her early movies, Gong Li represents a tragic victim and an abused soul (physically or emotionally), trying to release herself from an impossible maze of corruption, violence and suppression. In Raise the Red Lantern and Shanghai Triad an additional tragic element is added to her being as she unintentionally becomes the executioner of new innocent victims, making her realize that she has assisted the dark cynical system. In June 1998, Gong Li became a recipient of France's Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. Two years later, she was invited by the Berlin Film Festival to be the president of its international jury at the festival's 50th anniversary (2001 February).
