McElroy attracted controversy in January 2012 when he criticized his teammates on a local Birmingham radio station, 97.3 The Zone, stating that his time in the locker room was the first time he'd ever been around selfish individuals, and added that many players in the locker room cared more about their own personal performance, rather than the team's performance.
