In 'Stranger Things' And 'Little Men,' The Kids Are All Right
Huffington Post - 7 months
This summer, the best entertainment comes from an unlikely source: teen boys. Two remarkable new releases ― the debut season of Netflix’s “Stranger Things” and the movie “Little Men” ― make heroes of adolescent males who are wiser and more daring than their age implies. Amid a dearth of quality blockbusters and the doldrums of summer television, “Stranger Things” and “Little Men” are out of place. They are subtle and affectionate, with charming young characters whose optimism defies the stubborn adults around them. The respective creatives responsible for “Stranger Things” and “Little Men” channel the agony and ecstasy of youth, deftly showcasing the limitlessness of childhood. If only these fussy parents would stop getting in the way ― if only they dared to dream. And if only more of our summer fare had been this lovely. (Minor spoilers ahead.) By now, you’ve probably heard a thing or two about “Stranger Things.” The Spielbergian genre hybrid, created by twins Ross and Matt Du ...

All 13 episodes stream today (you can read our review here). 6pm, Cartoon Network The Powerpuff Girls "Tiara Trouble" gives Townsville trouble from a tiara, because sometimes titles get right to the point. Specifically, the cursed headgear lays its whammy on the pageant of Beauty, Talent, and All-Around Flair. 8pm, The CW The Vampire Diaries Damon and Alaric road-trip it to Memphis in "One Way or Another." Ostensibly it has something to do with an escaped vampire and getting Stefan back, but I think they just want to indulge in blues, bourbon, BBQ, and bro-time. Elsewhere, Bonnie makes a valuable new friend in the psych ward whil ...

Kerry Washington premieres 'Confirmation'
Yahoo News - 11 months
Kerry Washington may be best known as political fixer Olivia Pope in ABC’s hit drama “Scandal,” but for her latest role, the actress explored the murky undertones of sexual harassment in U.S. politics in HBO film “Confirmation.” Washington plays law professor Anita Hill, who became an international figure when she accused her former colleague, U.S. Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas of sexual harassment in 1991. "I think a lot of what the film is about is about the power of participation," said Washington.  "We're so lucky to live in a democracy where our representatives, their job is to represent us, but they don't get to do that unless we show up, unless we let our voices be heard to participate through voting, so I think that's a lot of what the film is about and I hope that people get a window into that process and realize their own power.” Washington was joined on the red carpet by Hill and actor Greg Kinnear, who plays current U.S. Vice President Joe Biden - Biden had presided ...

Sundance So Far: 'Little Men' Is One Of The Festival's Best
Huffington Post - about 1 year
The Sundance Film Festival winds down this weekend, which puts a cap on the early indie buzz drifting from the Utah mountains. A few days ago, the biggest distribution deal in Sundance history went to "The Birth of a Nation," while "Manchester by the Sea" brought audiences to their emotional knees. Two more -- "Christine" and "Little Men" -- found ample fans among Sundance's crowds. Here are a few words on those, plus Werner Herzog's latest documentary.   "Little Men" Directed by Ira Sachs • Written by Ira Sachs and Mauricio Zacharias Starring Greg Kinnear, Theo Taplitz, Michael Barbieri, Jennifer Ehle, Paulina García and Talia Balsam  Ira Sachs' films fade to black with such little pomp that the scope of their meaning becomes a cascade. As the minutes and hours and days pass, scenes adopt new layers and characters become rich examples of the complexities inherent in the simplest exchanges. With "Keep the Lights On," Sachs nursed the lulls of a complicated romance. In "Love i ...

Kerry Washington On Portraying Anita Hill: I Was Terrified
Huffington Post - about 1 year
PASADENA, Calif. (AP) -- Kerry Washington says she was acutely aware of the challenge of playing Anita Hill in a miniseries dramatizing Clarence Thomas' Supreme Court confirmation hearings. "I was terrified. Portraying somebody who's real is a different kind of responsibility, especially when they're alive. That significance was not lost on me," Washington told a TV critics' meeting Thursday. Washington, who is also an executive producer on HBO's "Confirmation," debuting in April, said she was 14 in 1991 when Hill emerged as a witness against Thomas, accusing him of workplace sexual harassment a decade before. The actress recalled her parents' passionate and contrasting reactions to the hearings, which she said made her determined that the miniseries avoid any "one-note" approach to the event and the people involved. Thomas is played by Wendell Pierce ("Treme," ''Ray Donovan"), who said he searched "for the humanity of the character" as actors typically do. "I had to c ...

Huffington Post - about 1 year
Miley Cyrus and her former fiancé, Liam Hemsworth, reportedly celebrated New Year's down under in the actor's home country of Australia. The two, along with Hemsworth's handsome family (seriously, they are stupid attractive), spent time together at the Falls Music Festival in Byron Bay.  Reports claim that the "Wrecking Ball" singer and the "Hunger Games" star were spotted "cuddling and kissing,” letting loose in the backstage VIP area with a group of friends, including Hemsworth's brothers, Luke and Chris, and their wives, Samantha and Elsa Pataky. No photo evidence of the alleged rekindled romance has surfaced, but social media users have shared some eyewitness accounts and choice photos that appear to be from Miley and Liam's getaway.  #BREAKING I spy with my lil eye @MileyCyrus and @LiamHemsworth backstage at falls festival Byron bay hmmmmm #backon #gossip — Ashleigh (@ASaunders_) January 2, 2016 A photo posted by Joshua Ryan Hutcherson ( ...

Can Indie Filmmakers Save Religious Cinema?
Yahoo News - almost 2 years
As “faith-based” films flooded into theaters last year, writers fell over themselves to declare 2014 the “year of the Bible movie.” It seemed as if the market—meaning Christian audiences to many—had finally come into its own, a decade after the runaway box-office success of The Passion of the Christ. Certainly, movies that reinforce beliefs their target audience already hold can make a lot of money, from political documentaries directed by Michael Moore or Dinesh D’Souza to films titled with declarations of religious certainty. Heaven Is for Real, starring Greg Kinnear, cost $12 million and made $101.3 million. Left Behind, a remake of the bestselling apocalyptic novels, starred Nicolas Cage and had a $16 million budget but opened to dismal reviews and grossed only $14 million domestically.

'Rake' Recap: To Beard or Not to Beard
Buddy TV - about 3 years
The unevenness and drastic tonal shifts now can't just be blamed on season premiere jitters, as it was clear with the second episode of Rake, "A Close Shave." The episode struggled sorting out if Keegan Deane is supposed to be a cynical louse, if the show wants to be a procedural or quirky drama, and finding enough time for the supporting cast. The series would almost be better suited to drop the need for a "case of the week," and give more time with the stories and interactions Keegan has with the other recurring characters.  There are still many positives that earn this show a few more chances, such as having some brilliant moments of black comedy and Greg Kinnear is absolutely endearing and engaging as the main character.
