Keira Knightley's 'Laggies' And Other Breakout Films From The First Weekend Of Sundance
Popeater - about 3 years
The first weekend of Sundance is kind of like starting a new job over and over again every year. You can figure out where to be and what to wear, but you don't know any of the details. At Sundance, we don't know which films will live up to the pre-festival hype, which will quickly deflate and which might sneak under the radar and explode like confetti in the sky after the first screening. As the years stack, you learn to keep an open mind and a fluid schedule so that you can jump on the next "Beasts Of The Southern Wild" or "Fruitvale Station" as soon as possible. Here are three films from the opening weekend of Sundance that caught our eye -- not only for the filmmaking, but for the dazzling movie stars in them: "Laggies" It takes a hell of a lot to get someone excited for an 8:30 a.m. screening on a Saturday morning, but Sundance queen, filmmaker Lynn Shelton ("Humpday," "Your Sister's Sister"), did exactly that. Billed as a coming-of-age story starring Keira Knightley, Chloë G ...

<i>Boardwalk Empire</i>'s Negro Problem: Creative License With DuBois and Garvey
Huffington Post - over 3 years
HBO's Boardwalk Empire is one of the most critically acclaimed shows on television. Set in Atlantic City, NJ during the prohibition era, Boardwalk Empire webs a weave of scandal caused by politicians, gangsters, suffragettes, prostitutes, business owners, federal authorities, county lawmen and the like, taking viewers on a visual journey through a time when the line between the good, the bad and the ugly was tremendously blurred. In 2010, Boardwalk Empire burst onto the scene with much fanfare featuring the talents of Martin Scorcese, as an executive producer on the show, Emmy award-winning director Tim Van Patten and Terence Winter, writer extraordinaire for the iconic series The Sopranos. Add a cast featuring heavyweight actors Steve Buscemi, Kelly MacDonald, Michael Shannon, Gretchen Mol and Michael K. Williams, and the show was destined to be a sure-fire hit. Forty Emmy nominations later and 17 wins including Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series (2011), Outstanding Casting for ...

Season Four of "Boardwalk Empire": More Great Characters, Sleazy Politics, and Racial Tensions
Mother Jones - over 3 years
As much critical acclaim as Boardwalk Empire has garnered over the last three years, there's an argument to be made that the HBO drama remains underrated. The series dialogue is consistently some of the sharpest and memorable on television, almost on a casual basis. The casting, production values, music, and 1920s gangland confrontations are superb. The effortlessness with which the Boardwalk crew juggles seemingly dozens of intersecting storylines is admirable. And the creative involvement of Martin Scorsese (who executive-produced and directed the $18-million pilot episode), author Dennis Lehane, and Terence Winter certainly doesn't hurt. It's all too easy to take the show's greatness for granted at this point. The fourth season (premiering Sunday, September 8 at 9 p.m. ET/PT) shrewdly advances and improves upon the rich character development and Prohibition-era power struggles of the excellent third season. Nucky (Steve Buscemi), "Chalky" (Michael Kenneth Williams), Capone (Ste ...

Recap of BOARDWALK EMPIRE Academy of Television and Science Panel; Creator Terrence Winter Talks Season Three
Collider - almost 5 years
The other night, The Academy of Television and Science hosted an exclusive panel with the cast and creator of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire. Boardwalk recounts the rise of the duplicitous Nucky Thompson torn between the political upheaval and criminal birth of the Prohibition.  His rise is cast against the downfall of his surrogate son, Jimmy Darmondy, a War Veteran scarred by his time over there.  It is the tense interplay between the two characters that gave Boardwalk Empire much of its dramatic heft during its first two remarkable seasons – which is probably what made Season Two’s conclusion so... surprising. During the panel, Steve Buscemi and Michael Pitt discussed the controversial finale, costar Michael Shannon lamented always playing “the crazy person”, and creator Terence Winter previewed Season Three, among many other topics of conversation.  For highlights from the panel (which also included costars Kelly Macdonald, Michael Stuhlbarg, Michael Kenneth Williams, Vincent Piazza ...

Just Jared - almost 5 years
Gretchen Mol graces the cover of Town &amp; Country‘s May issue. Here’s what the 39-year-old Boardwalk Empire actress had to share with the mag: On the rumor she was discovered while a hat-check girl at Michael’s: “It was the Weinsteins – in the business of making stars, with cigars hanging out of their mouths. That was the imagery. And I was a hat-check girl. First of all, who is a hat-check girl? I never checked a hat in my damn life.” On what ifs: “I wonder what would have happened if my attitude had been different and I had been more like the girl on the cover (of Vanity Fair) – like, ‘Everybody, get aside!’ My own self-doubt gave room for the animals. When I was on the Celebrity set, I was like ‘I’m not going to talk to him [Woody Allen] unless he talks to me. I was probably too much the polite girl.”
