Alanis Morissette Looks Back At 'Jagged Little Pill' In Candid Essay
Huffington Post - over 1 year
You oughta know that Alanis Morissette has re-released her seminal 1995 album "Jagged Little Pill" and penned an essay on her website reflecting on her experiences making it. "When 'You Oughta Know' was first taken to radio, the consistent response was, 'We are already playing two female artists, we don’t need another one,'" Morissette wrote on her site, describing the tough time she had finding collaborators after her first record label dropped her. Twenty years later, Morissette can boast that "Jagged Little Pill" sat atop the Billboard chart for 13 consecutive weeks, produced four No. 1 singles and won the Grammy for Album of the Year.  "There were attempts to clean it all up, 'perfectify' it all … " the singer wrote. "I was admonished on more than one occasion for the record sounding 'too caustic' and 'too imperfect.' I got a lot of dirty looks for that one. I remember telling them, 'Well, if you wanted a record that sounded like Dan Steely, then maybe you should have signe ...

Mike Hogan: AND THEY'RE OFF
Huffington Post - over 3 years
Welcome to For Your Consideration, HuffPost Entertainment's breakdown of all things Oscar. Between now and March 2, 2014, executive arts and entertainment editor Michael Hogan and entertainment editor Christopher Rosen will chat about awards season and which films will make the most noise at the 86th annual Academy Awards. Rosen: Hello, Mike! To "borrow"* from Bill Simmons: Good lord! That's For Your Consideration's music. July 1 is the official halfway point of 2013, meaning it's a great time to check in on the upcoming Oscar race! **Ducks away from tossed tomato.** Or maybe it's not a great time: The Oscars don't actually seem to care about movies released from Jan. 1 to July 1. At the 85th annual Academy Awards this year, only "Beasts of the Southern Wild" and its director (Benh Zeitlin) and star (Quvenzhane Wallis; I can still spell it on the first try) represented the first six months of 2012 in the six major categories. So! Which 2013 release could be the next " ...

Lucy Cooper: Start Up CEOs: Would You Take Money From Britney or Ashton?
Huffington Post - about 4 years
A colleague of mine is at The Founders Forum in LA this week. He's sending annoying photo's of all the cool people he's meeting. Will.i.am, Dynamo, Natalia Vodianova. But, I hear you saying -- he's at a tech conference? Why are celebrities interested in tech? It's sexy (subjective I guess, but I'm a nerd), it's fun, it's important, it helps them extend their brand -- and not to be sniffed at -- it's an important part of any high net worth's investment portfolio. However, like any investor, some celebrities are pioneers and others are followers. One such pioneer is Will.i.am; this article documents his work well; he is a champion of STEM (science, technology, engineering, maths) education, has a foundation -- i.am.angel, has worked with NASA to engage young people in space exploration, owns i.am.auto (a car company) and has a partnership with Coca-Cola called Ekocycle. Oh -- and he's a director of creative innovation at Intel. Wikipedia defines a technology evangelist ...

Madonna Spotted Shooting 'Turn Up The Radio' Video In Italy
MTV News - almost 5 years
Ten days after it was rumored she'd be shooting her "Turn Up the Radio" video in Rome, Madonna was photographed in another Italian city filming the clip. On Monday, her manager, Guy Oseary, tweeted a photo of Madonna, along with some dancers, from the video shoot in Florence. In the snapshot, Madonna smiles as she makes her way to a convertible filled with dancers clad in colorful, shiny clothes. As for Madonna's wardrobe, she's dressed in all black, and she topped off the look with a black-and-white hat, which she's tipping down in the photo. The shot matches the track's summery vibe. "Give It 2 Me" music video director Tom Munro has reportedly been tapped for this video, with Madonna's longtime collaborator Martin Solveig producing. "We were working with no limits. I think the only thing that she said when we started was, 'I just want people to be able to dance to my music and connect easily with my music,' and also probably to take some risks at some point," Solveig said ab ...

Madonna's Stage: What Big Video Screens You Have
MTV News - almost 5 years
Whether or not bigger is always better is up for debate, but both Madonna and Lady Gaga are approaching their respective world tours with a "go big or go home" attitude when it comes to staging. Earlier this week, we reported that Gaga's elaborate Gothic castle stage for her "Born This Way Ball" is the "largest scenic structure that's ever been built to tour." But don't confuse that feat with "the largest video screens ever created" to hit the road, because those are going to be toted around the world for Her Madgesty's "MDNA Tour." Got that? Now, we're getting our first peak at M's jumbo screens, courtesy of our hunky boyfriend her manager Guy Oseary, who posted several images from the first days of full production rehearsal for the tour. Check this thing out: Guy Oseary, Twitter Pretty rad, huh? In another image (after the jump), we also get a first look at how the pit, where select fans will get to enjoy the show from, will be structured. The concept is similar to the Mo ...

Madonna's Italian Vanity Fair Cover
MTV News - almost 5 years
Madonna has been famously laying low when it comes to promoting her MDNA album. She hit Facebook for a chat with Jimmy Fallon and, well, that's about it. No magazines, no talk shows. (Maybe she's letting the set's great reviews and that killer Super Bowl performance do the talking for her?) Across the pond, however, she is covering at least one mag, but with a twist. According to a tweet from her manager Guy Oseary, her cover image for Italian Vanity Fair is from the same Mert & Marcus photo shoot as the print ads for her Truth or Dare fragrance. That Madonna, always multitasking. Madonna's Tour On Track 'To End Up In The Top 10 Tours Of All Time'
MTV News - almost 5 years
Get More: Music News There's been a bit of shizz slinging of late regarding Madonna's new album, her world tour and whether we should be calling either a success. After earning positive reviews and debuting strongly at #1, MDNA, experienced a sharp sales decline in its second week and a majority of her US tour dates have yet to sell out. Those two facts taken together sent a few music writers down the rabbit hole, with some going so far as to say Live Nation, which signed Madonna to a $120 million 360 deal with in 2007, was concerned over both her album and concert ticket sales given the size and length (10 years) of their commitment to the Queen of Pop. >> Madonna's Manager Confirms That 'Turn Up The Radio' Will Be Next MDNA Single Yesterday, Madonna's manager Guy Oseary hit Twitter to address the rumors and now Arthur Fogel, Chairman of Live Nation Global Touring, talked to Billboard, saying that not only is business brisk for Madonna's tour but it is actually " ...

Madonna’s New Album “MDNA” Bombs; Sets Record for Biggest Sales Drop in Billboard History
Gossip On This - almost 5 years
Pop icon Madonna’s latest album has bombed terribly on the charts. Her 12th studio album “MDNA” which debuted on top of the Billboard charts last week after selling an amazing 359,000 copies has plummeted to a mere 46,000 in the second week. That’s an 88% drop in sales! And not only that, but no other No. 1 debuting album has had a sales drop that massive since Nielson Soundscan started tracking sales in 1991. The percentage dip surpasses the record set by Lady Gaga‘s “Born This Way,” when it fell 84.27% in its second week on the charts last June. In its debut week, “Born This Way” bowed at No. 1 with 1.11 million copies sold, and then sold 174,000 in its second week at the top of the chart. Speaking on Madge’s latest studio effort last week, her manager Guy Oseary confidently said: “People are really digging it. We feel good about the album. It’s her 12th album and the same story she had 30 years ago. That’s an amazing accomplishment.” Maybe Oseary should have wait ...

Madonna's Manager Confirms That 'Turn Up The Radio' Will Be Next MDNA Single
MTV News - almost 5 years
They say "ask and you shall receive." Well, we asked … and it looks like we are getting what we want. Guy Oseary, Madonna's hunky Twitter-phile manager, took to the social net this morning to respond to a Madge fan championing "Turn Up the Radio" as the next single from MDNA, saying the song "is feeling like the next single." Now, we've been pushing for "Radio" to be a single since, well, before MDNA even came out, so this is music to our ears! At the time, we posited that Madonna was knowingly waiting until early summer to give the track an official single release because it's a perfect warm weather tune. The calculated perfectionism of some of Madonna's club jams can leave you feeling a little chilly, but that's not the case with "Radio." During our little pre-release listening party, I scribbled the words "effervescent" and "happy" in my notes. The track has a propulsive energy that just feels so authentic and alive. It's a big, anthemic dance-pop wonder with glittery synths ...

Madonna Sets Humiliating Record
Huffington Post - almost 5 years
Madonna's MDNA may be the first album to both top the Billboard charts and be a massive commercial failure. The record debuted at No. 1 on the charts, prompting her longtime manager Guy Oseary to herald the singer's comeback as a great success. And thought it was quite a triumphant return, it turned out to be a short-lived one buoyed by what some are calling a cheap trick. MDNA sales have fallen a record 88 percent week-over-week, from 379,000 copies to a mere 46,000, Forbes reports. So why the dramatic drop? In a somewhat savvy move, Madonna packaged the album with ticket sales on Ticketmaster. Though Lionel Richie's Tuskegee was outpacing her in projected sales, Madge was able to surpass his release by essentially giving her album away to anyone who bought a ticket to see her tour. These "sales" were then counted in Billboard's tally. The only problem? With her shows either sold out or nearly sold out, no one's going to be buying tickets any time soon. P ...

Madonna Celebrates #1 Album With Surprise Party Backstage At Tour Rehearsals
MTV News - almost 5 years
Madonna, Twitter The Queen of Pop is enjoying a big week and yesterday she celebrated her successes during rehearsals for her upcoming world tour with her dancers, crew and manager, Guy Oseary. In video she posted during her Twitter Q&A with fans last night, Madonna shows up to rehearsals and is surprised by Oseary with a party to celebrate the #1 debut of her 12th studio album, MDNA. Sticking to the celebrity tradition of not knowing news about yourself that everyone else knew two days ago, Madonna tells Oseary she "didn't even know" she was at the top of the charts! (Sure, Madonna. Sure.) From the looks of things, everyone was in high spirits with balloons filling what looks like a backstage area full of sound equipment and plenty of champagne to go around. "Guy, I'm going to give this to you, for real," Madonna says as she slices a piece of cake for her manager. But, like a just-married couple, Her Madgesty won't just let him have his cake and eat it too. She promp ...
