Bambino Cinema: Inaugurated by Ayub, destroyed by a mob
The Express Tribune Blogs - over 4 years
KARACHI:  While Ciniplex and Atrium Cinemas have re-opened after a day’s closure, now full to the brim with moviegoers eager to watch the recently released Kareena Kapoor starrer Heroine, the city’s oldest cinemas show no signs of life. Bambino Cinema is one of Karachi’s six charred movie theatres that tell the story of violent protestors rallying on Youm-e-Ishq, looting and burning property on a whim. But as the resilient and amnesic citizens of Karachi quickly put Friday’s madness behind them, Bambino is deathly silent. Instead of the buttery smell of fresh popcorn and the chatter of excited moviegoers, the entrance hall of Bambino is fetid and empty. The sharp, sulphuric stink of burnt plastic hits the back of the throat, the metal grille installed as a security measure was warped by the heat and human hand, its gaping holes proof that bolt cutters were used. Posters of local and Indian films hang from the ceiling in tatters. The one item th ...

You can’t defend the Prophet (pbuh) by torching your own city!
The Express Tribune Blogs - over 4 years
Blasphemy is a sensitive subject, especially in Pakistan. A topic so sensitive that it can get governors killed after a cup of coffee, ministers shot after they drive out of their homes and 12-year-old children behind bars for ‘allegedly’ committing it. Victims of blasphemy cases in Pakistan sign their death warrants. Why does it then come as a surprise to know that more than 15 people were killed and 219 wounded in protests across Pakistan yesterday? Because this time, rampant damage was caused to property and life of people who had nothing to do with it. Life and property belonging to the Muslims. Calls for peaceful protests on Friday against the blasphemous film were rational. Muslims all over the world were already outraged at how it was made and released under the garb of freedom of expression. In Pakistan particularly, it brought together many liberals and extremists under one agenda; absolute condemnation of the film. But how did we register our protest against an atta ...

Bus attack: 30 people survived, but only 1 statement recorded
The Express Tribune Blogs - over 4 years
HYDERABAD / KARACHI:  Thirty people survived the attack on the bus on Friday but the police have been able to record only one person’s version of events, that of the cleaner, Nadeem Khan. “There was complete panic yesterday and everyone who survived fled except for a few, including the injured,” said Qazi Ahmed SHO Edan Siyal. Nadeem Khan said that a suspect caught the bus from Sakrand stop and said Rawalpindi was his destination. He asked the bus to stop near Rain Shaakh (a distributary) to collect documents from his brother. It was at that spot that the four assailants barged in. There appears to be a discrepancy in Nadeem’s recounting of the number of attackers. A member of the motorway police, who reached the spot before the police, said that people there had put the number at seven. “When I arrived, the conductor Lal Khan Jatoi was busy getting the panicked passengers who survived on to other transport vehicles passing by,” he said. Th ...
