Carol Hill Albert: Coney Island Stories: Category One
Huffington Post - about 4 years
"Coney Island." Two magic words heard round the world that conjure up sun, sand, summer, happiness, and wonderful childhood memories. These magic memories, seemingly universal ,were partly what inspired me to start an oral history of Coney island called "The Coney Island History Project " which was founded by myself and my late husband Jerome Albert. Little did I ever expect to be recording terrifying memories of a storm. There were anguished stories to be heard and wonderful inspiring stories of people doing the "good thing," "the right thing." One of those stories however, entered a special category: unforgettable. I call it "Category One." This is the story of a woman who had worked for years in Coney Island and recently retired to a beautiful home in the Rockaways. Both beachfront communities were often referred to as "a little bit of paradise." "Armageddon" is certainly not a word you usually associate with paradise. In ordinary usage it conjures up hellfire. ...

Football: Signs of life at Washington Prep
LATimes - over 4 years
The toughest league in the City Section is the Marine League, and it has become even more competitive with the improvement of Washington Prep, which is 4-1 under first-year Coach Harry Causey after seasons of 2-8 the last two years and 1-9 in 2009. Causey, a former Washington assistant, has tried to restore pride and respect for the Generals, and two players are having big seasons on defense. Nose tackle Ashton Dennis, 6 feet 2, 280 pounds, has eight tackles for losses. Linebacker Jernell Sutherland, 6-3, 210 pounds, is a basketball player playing football for the first time, and he has six sacks. Washington opens league play on Friday against Banning, whose coach, Tim McTyre, played for Causey at Washington. Also in the league, Gardena is 5-0 under first-year Coach Dean Toliver, a former Leuzinger coach. Gardena opens against San Pedro. And unbeaten Narbonne plays winless Carson. -- Eric Sondheimer

This Customizable "Stick With It" Carry Case Makes Me Wish Screwdriver Bits Were Makeup
Core 77 - almost 5 years
That there is my personal drivers-and-bits kit for repairing vintage sewing machines, which require very specific bits and handles. Because no one offers all of the things I needed for it, I had to buy components piecemeal from three different gunsmithing manufacturers and assemble the kit as seen. I hate the design of the case, which was the only one I could find that even came close to what I needed. The bits are only held in place by gravity and, when the case is closed, the top of each bit being wedged in place by the underside of the case lid. But as you can see, the holes are of different depths: That means the shorter bits migrate when the case is bouncing around in your bag and wind up all over the place. To compensate, I used adhesive file labels to cover the holes for the shorter bits, then poked the bits through the labels. The extra material shoved into the hole provides enough friction to keep the bits in place in transit. I had to sacrifice bit storage ...

In the mid-1990s, due to the revived interest in the music and fashions of the 1970s, Casey re-formed the Sunshine Band. Casey was born on January 31, 1951 in Hialeah, Florida, to a father of Irish descent and a mother of Italian (Pentone CZ and Gimigliano CZ, Calabria) descent. He grew up in the Greater Miami area.

The first few songs, "Blow Your Whistle" (September 1973) and "Sound Your Funky Horn" (February 1974), were released as singles, and did well enough on the U.S. R&B chart and overseas that TK wanted a follow up single and album. However, while working on demos for KC & the Sunshine Band the song, "Rock Your Baby" (George McCrae) was created. The band's "Queen of Clubs" was a hit in the UK, peaking at No. 7, and they went on tour there in 1975.
