I'm Not Your Baby!
Huffington Post - 4 months
I've worked at my local public library long enough to be on a first-name basis with many of our patrons. And the rest greet me with the courtesy and respect that, as a trained professional, I deserve. Except for when they don't. From time to time, a patron will call me "sweetie." Or "honey-bunch." Or "dear." And I'm not alone. Recently a fellow librarian posted this lament on Facebook: "A patron just called me baby. Can I go home now?" The comments this inspired from other librarians were sympathetic: I hear you. I've got a Master's Degree in Library Science. So naturally, I want to be greeted with "Hiya cupcake!" What? I hate being called pet names. "Do you have the latest Grisham, lovey?" ICK. A patron called me "doll" the other day. I didn't realize that my library was in a film noir movie starring Humphrey Bogart. I'm not a baby. I'm old enough to collect social security. A little respect, please. Today a student half my age called me "hon." And an ...

How Heidi Fleiss Went From Running A Babysitting Ring To A Prostitution Ring
Huffington Post - almost 2 years
Long before Heidi Fleiss became a household name, before she was the liaison between A-listers and prostitutes, she was running things -- a babysitting ring, to be exact. Fleiss, known as the "Hollywood Madam" for her years catering to the stars, told HuffPost Live's Ricky Camilleri on Friday about her first gig, and how she took the same model to prostitution. "When I was 13, I had about 15 women working for me [as babysitters]," she said. "Say, for instance, the Steinmans asked me to babysit on a Friday night, but I was already babysitting for another couple, but I couldn't let that money go. So I would send a friend to go do the other couple, and it went from there." Fleiss went on to run her highly profitable prostitution ring until she was arrested in 1993. Her famed discretion is what attracted the celebrities, and Fleiss wasn't prepared to reveal any secrets Friday. She did mention that studios used to pay for actors to indulge in her services from time to time, but sh ...

Speak English!
Huffington Post - about 2 years
I've never actually had anyone say "speak English" to me when I was gabbing in Spanish with my mom or sister or friends, but I've always had a line ready, in case it happens, as I'm sure many of you have. Why have we felt the need to do that? Because we all know what it feels like to get the stink-eye in a store or other public place from someone just itching to tell you that the language over here is not Spanish. My mom recently told me that the cashiers at her local pharmacy were told not to speak Spanish to customers anymore. I get it a little bit, I do. I understand that it makes you feel left out when you can't understand someone nearby. I enjoy "ear hustling" as my colleague calls the art of eavesdropping, so I don't love it if I can't understand what my Russian or Armenian neighbors are sometimes saying to one another. I have had to come to terms with the fact that sometimes I just have to mind my own business. I've also had to accept that they're probably not saying I've g ...

Justin Bieber Home Investigation: No Egging Evidence Found
The Hollywood Gossip - about 3 years
Justin Bieber was arrested for one crime last Thursday. But will he get away with another? On the heels of his DUI arrest, the singer finally received some good news over the weekend: According to TMZ insiders, the L.A. County Sheriff's Department sifted through various items it confiscated from Bieber's home... and did not find any evidence linking Justin to the alleged egging of his neighbor's home from earlier this month. Days after the incident supposedly took place, authorities executed a search warrant, sending multiple police cruisers to Bieber's Calabasas mansion in order to collect the artist's cell phone and some surveillance video. They hoped to find text messages Bieber sent bragging about the egg hurling and/or footage from Justin's own security cameras that would have depicted this criminal act. But they have come away empty-handed. Bieber's neighbor claims the superstar tossed at least 20 eggs against his home a few weeks ago, causing ...

Sydney Levin: Eat, Pray, Lunch
Huffington Post - over 3 years
Note: Do not read on if you have not seen Season 5, Episode 2 of Bravo's "The Real Housewives of New Jersey," titled "A Manzo of her Word." Open: A beautiful scene in Teresa's kitchen. "Milania," Gia says lovingly, "when the oil splashes on you, I'm going to laugh so hard!" As the children eat each other alive, Teresa looks as dismayed as someone with empty eyes and a bag of hair for brains possibly could. "When I was growing up and we were sitting at the dinner table, we were not able to get off the table until we were all done eating." This certainly begs the question of why Teresa ate on top of the table. In my family, rabid animals remain on the floor. Next, the girls make cards for their grandfather, who is about to get a pacemaker installed. Teresa tries to explain the surgery in kid-friendly terms, but Milania, harbinger of death, is on to her. "HE'LL DIE!" she shouts, obviously unaware of death's permanence. Over at Melissa's, Joe casually throws a mini-footb ...

WATCH: 'Hollywood Madam' Reveals The Big Mistake That Got Charlie Sheen Busted
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
When Heidi Fleiss was busted for running a high-class prostitution ring in the early 1990s, the "Hollywood madam to the stars" refused to release any of the names in her little black book of clients. But there was one name that leaked to the public: Charlie Sheen. In this clip from "Oprah: Where Are They Now?", Heidi recalls the moments of her highly publicized arrest -- including the single moment that led to Charlie's exposure -- and still stands firm on her decision not to release her clients' names even now, two decades later. "I've been offered a lot of money to talk about the people I've done business with," Heidi says in the clip. "It's just something that never even occurred to me and it would never occur to me. None of those people did anything but good. I did business with really nice people." One of those people, as the public knows, was Charlie. So, if Heidi has been so tight-lipped about her list of clients, how did his name get released? Heidi says it ...

Can You Picture Charlie Sheen And Katie Couric Dating?
Huffington Post - about 4 years
Raise your hand if you think Charlie Sheen should get married again. No one? Apparently you aren't alone, because Sheen himself agrees with you. The former "Two and a Half Men" star's new interview with Katie Couric airs today, and during it he asserts that three marriages are enough for him. When Couric asked Sheen whether he thinks he may ever tie the knot again, the actor said, “In baseball, when you strike out three times ... it’s a golden sombrero. Four times is a platinum sombrero. ... I’m not wearing the platinum sombrero of marriage.” He immediately amended that thought, however, saying he'd rethink his position if Couric were to offer. “What are you gettin’ at? Uh-oh, Page Six!" he joked -- or so we hope. “That’d be awesome! Just the rumor — wouldn’t it?" Couric didn't seem quite as forthcoming about the matter though. "Maybe for you," she responded. Sheen's three marriages have all ended in divorce. His first engagement, to actress Kelly P ...

Hulu.com: Actual Shark Tank: The Absolute Worst Spin-Offs We Could Possibly Think of
Huffington Post - over 4 years
It's getting weird in TV spinoff season. Fox just took "The Voice," stripped it of its talent and its capital V, then replaced it with abs and sadness. It's called "The Choice," it's mildly entertaining, and it's basically a Bat Signal for whichever Mayan God controls the apocalypse. He can now press the big red button without any semblance of regret. But we thought we could do worse. We've come up with a list of the worst possible spin-offs of currently airing TV shows. And, yes, they're all considerably more watchable than The Choice. In most of these shows, at least the terrible people die at the end. Actual Shark Tank Entrepreneurial inventors who've figured out how to build a better mousetrap bring their product and their pitch (and more than a little moxie) to a panel of investors who, upon carefully considering the pitches, releases a trap door through which contestants plunge to their imminent demise in an actual shark tank. Once in the tank, as the inve ...
