Brooklyn's Original Music Workshop
Huffington Post - over 3 years
This past Spring, I bumped into an old friend and classmate of mine from Juilliard, the composer and producer, Paola Prestini. We hadn't seen each other in years and she caught me up on the latest details in her life: her marriage to Jeff Zeigler (former cellist of the Kronos Quartet), their young son Tommaso, and her new role as creative director for an impressive new venue being built in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. "It's called Original Music Workshop" she told me, "it's going to be amazing!" She explained that the Original Music Workshop will be a 24/7, state-of-the-art concert hall, recording studio, and non-profit home for young composers and performing artists- a place where one can hear bands, listen to chamber music, or record a 70 piece orchestra. "It's going to open next year" she said, "and there's going to be a restaurant too." Toward the end of our conversation, Paola informed me of the concerts they'd been hosting during their "virtual season," a series of private preludes t ...

Fathom: Hippie-Hipster Woodstock Love
Huffington Post - over 3 years
Landmark sign. Anti-establishment attitude. All photos by Anna Balkrishna. The quirky, from-the-land, DIY spirit is alive and well in Woodstock, albeit in a 21st-century guise. Hipsters are the new-age hippies here, peddling hunting jackets and homemade soap, looking for fresh air, peace, quiet, and a proper (seasonal, sustainable) dinner to top it all off. Fathom contributor Anna Balkrishna tells it on a mountain. CATSKILL MOUNTAINS, New York – You know you're a New Yorker when you measure your love for the city by how easily you can escape it in two hours or less. So when the Boyfriend gave us the assignment to skip town after work on Friday, I immediately suggested Woodstock (two hours and eight minutes away, according to Google Maps). The little Catskills hamlet has everything we love in a weekend getaway: the great outdoors, great food, and just enough local weirdos to keep things interesting. GET INTO TOWN Woodstock will forever be associated with the 1969 musi ...

Helena Christensen, Poses Nude, Looks Amazing at Age 44
US Magazine - over 3 years
Middle age has never looked so good! Helena Christensen -- she of the startlingly blue eyes, dark hair, and rockin' body --  is 44, but the Danish stunner is still an 11 when it comes to her appearance. The former Victoria's Secret model poses in the new issue of FutureClaw, and whether she's in revealing lingerie or in her birthday suit, one thing's for sure: She has some unbelievable genes. PHOTOS: Supermodels -- then and now The photo spread feels incredibly intimate. Not only did the photographer shoot the images in the model's NYC home, which is decorated in a downtown-bohemian style, but Christensen herself did the styling -- meaning she picked out the sheer negligee, she chose the fuschia granny panties and too-tight bolero, she paired the strapless black bra with nothing but a swan figurine, and she opted to go completely nude. (In one shot, she poses naked on a chair in front of her shoe collection.) "There are some of my favorite items in there, yeah. It was inter ...

Jay Weston: Helmut Newton Show at Annenberg Is Visually Stunning
Huffington Post - over 3 years
I am a huge fan of Helmut Newton's photography. Not just the erotic nudes, although I certainly appreciate them. But I have always thought and still do that he was one of the genius artists of the last hundred years. He brought a fresh eye and an audacious joy to the fashion photography of my era. I actually had dinner with him and his wife June one evening in 2001 at his winter home, the Chateau Marmont in Hollywood, to discuss his doing some photos of Diana Ross in a film I was producing, "Lady Sings The Blues," but we couldn't work out the dates. We had been introduced by film director Billy Wilder, his close friend, who directed my film, "Buddy, Buddy." Like most of the world, I was stunned when the 83-year-old Newton had a fatal car crash just outside of that hotel in January, 2004. Thus I was enthused to attend an advance viewing of the Helmut Newton exhibition at the wonderful Annenberg Space for Photography (2000 Avenue of the Stars, Century City, (310) 403-3000) ...

PHOTOS: Helena Christensen's Topless Cover Is... Strange
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
Helena Christensen frolicking topless on the beach with Chris Isaak in his "Wicked Game" music video was one of the most defining pop culture moments of the early '90s. So you'd think repeating that formula (Helena + beach - bikini top) would equal success, right? Not quite. Elle Spain attempted to recreate the magic, casting the 44-year-old stunner for its latest cover. While Helena still looks drop dead gorgeous in a swimsuit, something about the camera angles and the coloring didn't sit too well with us. Besides, doesn't it look like the model's legs are growing out of her bottom in the main cover shot? Not a good look. Of course, the Vogue cover girl knows how to rock beachwear, whether she's vacationing in Italy or posing in glossies, so we're going to chalk up the awkwardness on Elle to poor art direction. Plus, who are we to criticize the woman who laughs off the idea of being "bikini-ready"? Check out the covers in question below -- and scroll down to watch H ...

Gloria Steinem Defends Kim Kardashian
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
Kim Kardashian is getting support from someone very unexpected -- feminist icon Gloria Steinem. Us Weekly caught up with the 79-year-old at the fourth annual Diane Von Furstenberg Awards and spoke about the fat-shaming of Kardashian's changing body and society's treatment of pregnant women overall. Steinem defended Kardashian against critics, saying that a woman's body is hers and hers alone. "Our bodies are never public property under any circumstance," she told the magazine. "It's wrong, and people in the street who feel the right to touch a pregnant woman's belly ought to be arrested for harassment. Our bodies belong to us, and if we don't invite touching, we shouldn't tolerate it." "If our bodies are treated as ornaments instead of instruments, that's because we are rebelling because it's an effort to distract us," she added. "So don't be distracted. Why bother getting caught up in that?" Society's manipulation of body image is something Steinem has long prot ...

Kim Kardashian Debuts Bare Baby Bump
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
Kim Kardashian is bumpin' and proud! Kardashian debuted her bare baby bump in an Instagram photo on Saturday. The 32-year-old beauty posed in a pair of tight black leggings and a white T-shirt in the double photo. In one frame she has her shirt down and in the other she has it rolled up to show her pregnant belly. SCROLL FOR PHOTO The reality star captioned the photo with a simple phrase: "Baby love." "[She's] finally accepting her body and getting more comfortable," a source told Us Weekly. This is the first time Kardashian has showed her bare bump to the world, at six months along. The big reveal comes after a smattering of headlines critiqued the E! star's changing body with stories about her incessant eating and her inflated weight gain. The fat-shaming of Kardashian has caused other celebrities to come to her defense. “I think that women should support each other, especially through pregnancy,” mother-of-two Gwyneth Paltrow told ET Online. “It’s a ...

Helena Christensen Defends Pregnant Kim Kardashian in Open Letter, Calls Criticism of Her Weight "Despicable"
US Magazine - almost 4 years
As a supermodel and former Victoria's Secret Angel, Helena Christensen is used to people talking about her body. But that doesn't mean she likes it. In fact, she's more sensitive to other women's body-image struggles because of it. The public shaming of one woman, in particular -- reality star and mom-to-be Kim Kardashian -- has the 44-year-old Danish beauty all riled up. PHOTOS: Kim's body evolution In an open letter posted on Huffington Post, Christensen defends Kardashian against criticism of her weight and slams the recent bullying over her changing body as "sacrilegious." (As reported in the April 1 issue of Us Weekly, the five-months-pregnant 32-year-old has been compared to Shamu and called "huge" and "fat.") "It is disgusting and despicable the way that certain media constantly harass the pregnant Kim Kardashian," Christensen writes. "It's enough that they persistently project a negative focus on women's physical shapes; but a public bullying and attacking of a pregnan ...
