Police Shooting Survivor Charles Kinsey Reveals The Exact Moment He 'Accepted' His Fate
Huffington Post - 5 days
On July 18, 2016, trained special-needs caregiver Charles Kinsey was helping a client with autism who had wandered from his group home with a toy truck in hand and was being confronted by police. As police surrounded Kinsey’s visibly agitated client, Kinsey’s attempts to diffuse the situation were overcome by mounting tension. Police ordered Kinsey to lie on the ground with his hands up in the air, and he complied. However, he was still shot by police. Part of the incident was captured on cell phone video. Upon seeing the footage, actress and autism advocate Holly Robinson Peete, like many, was outraged. So, she organized a panel discussion about autism and policing, and invited Kinsey to share his story, including the parts that cell phone video didn’t capture. As Kinsey said during the discussion, the incident was terrifying, but he kept thinking about his client’s safety in the midst of the chaos. “I’ve got these guys coming at me with AR-15s,” Kinsey says. “My f ...

Autism And Police: My Plan To Protect My Driving-Age Son (And Yours)
Huffington Post - 13 days
The nightmare ends the same way every time: I drive up on my house and see police cars with lights on. Policemen with guns drawn. I see a young man in a red hoodie lying face down. Bleeding. Shot. I approach the person on the ground ― cops yell to stop, but I push past them. I roll him over and pull off the hood... and it’s RJ, my teenaged son with autism. Parents of a child on the autism spectrum have similar dreams. And nightmares. Since my RJ was was diagnosed with autism in 2000 at age 3, our journey on the “autism express,” as we call it, has been filled with high-highs, low-lows and countless small wins. On diagnosis day, or “the Never Day,” a pediatrician rattled off an exhaustive, hope-starved laundry list of things he would “never” do: develop language, attend a mainstream school, have meaningful friendships, play team sports, drive, self-advocate, live on his own or say “I love you” unprompted. It was a devastating and suffocating day. When RJ was a toddler throug ...

Autism and the Black Community
Huffington Post - 9 months
Growing up, I never heard the term autistic. I guess my first encounter with autism was the movie Rain Man and its portrayal of an autistic savant. For many years, the black community has shunned talks about developmental disabilities and mental illness. When it came to the development disabled, the term "slow" or "little yellow school bus" has frequently been used. The topic of mental illness is typically avoided. In this technological age, there is no excuse for being uninformed especially when it prevents those who need help from receiving it. I am not a reality TV fan, but I love For Peete's Sake featuring Holly Robinson-Peete and her family. Her eldest son, RJ, is autistic. Although RJ is highly functioning, others with autism do not have his communication skills or support to insulate him from ignorant people, like 50 Cent's recent bullying of an autistic airport employee. Others celebrities like Toni Braxton and Shawn Stockman have autistic children and are ambassadors for ge ...

Julie Chen Warns 'The View' Not To Become 'More Like' 'The Talk'
Huffington Post - over 3 years
NEW YORK — Balloons and fans chanting her name greeted Jenny McCarthy on her first day on "The View" on Monday, opening a transition season for Barbara Walters' daytime show at the same time a program modeled after it, "The Talk," is gaining momentum. At "The View," they're even looking to introduce something revolutionary: men. It's the 17th season for "The View" on ABC and the last with Walters on the air. The only other remaining original cast member, Joy Behar, departed this summer, and Elisabeth Hasselbeck left for Fox News Channel. The show's basic idea – a group of women of different ages and backgrounds chatting about events of the day – was the obvious model for "The Talk" when the CBS program began four years ago. "The Talk" cast of Sara Gilbert, Julie Chen, Sharon Osbourne, Aisha Tyler and Sheryl Underwood are intact for another season. McCarthy, a TV veteran whose recent VH1 show didn't work out, got a tour of the city and the lion's share of attention Monday. "I'm grate ...

WATCH: Actress Comments About 'Lesbian Lacrosse Team'
Huffington Post - over 3 years
In talking about the Philadelphia Eagles and college football with ESPN's "First Take," actress Holly Robinson Peete got a little off-topic. The former "21 Jump Street" and "Hangin' With Mr. Cooper" star, who's married to ex-Eagles and USC quarterback Rodney Peete, mentioned she went to Sarah Lawrence College, which does not have big-time time sports. "We had like a lesbian lacrosse team," she said. Co-hosts Cari Champion and Skip Bayless appeared uncomfortable, prompting Peete to remark, "You OK, Skip?" Champion issued an on-air apology for Peete's "inappropriate" comment. (Note that in the edited YouTube video above, the apology appears before the studio sequence with Peete.) The Huffington Post left a message with a rep listed as Peete's agent but did not receive an immediate response. Peete became the latest celebrity to draw fire for a perceived anti-gay slur. In late June, Alec Baldwin called reporter George Clark a "toxic little queen" in a tweet after ...

Holly Robinson Peete: Autism, Meet Adolescence... Kaboom!: One Momma's Perspective, Fears and Solutions
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
In January of 2000 I heard words that would change my life: "Your son has classic autism." I remember thinking then -- desperately seeking a silver lining -- is "classic" a good thing? Like a "classic" car or film? Then the very "bedside-manner challenged" pediatrician who was delivering this news went on to rattle off the many things our RJ would "never" do: talk, make friends, mainstream in school, participate in organized sports (that went over so well with my QB hubby. Kidding. So not kidding.). Oh and she topped it off with this gem: You will never hear him say the words 'I love you' unprompted." Lovely. Thanks, Dr. Dreamcrusher. It felt as though the bar of his life was lowered to within an inch of the ground. He was just 3. Smash cut to: 10 years later -- not only had RJ checked all of these "nevers" off his list but he had exceeded so many expectations which had been so easily dismissed by this diagnosis. Be clear, I am fast-forwarding over that decade's countless ...

Still 'Hangin'!
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
"Hangin' With Mr. Cooper" may be a distant, yet fond memory for many fans of ABC's T.G.I.F. lineup, but the series' former stars Holly Robinson Peete and Mark Curry are still ... well, hangin'. While filling in for Billy Bush as a guest host on Access Hollywood Live this week, Peete said she and Curry see each other all the time because their kids are in the same class. "When you do a TV series with someone for five or six years, you either never want to see that person again or they're a permanent member of your family," Peete said. "The irony is that Mark's daughter and my son are in the same class so I hang with Mr. Cooper every day." "Hangin' With Mr. Cooper" aired from 1992 to 1997 and centered on single high-school teacher and coach Mr. Cooper (Curry), a man who got through every situation life threw his way with humor, including living with two female roommates, one being Peete. Are you surprised Peete and Curry still hang out?
