New Strategies to End Hunger: Howard Buffett's 40 Changes: Hope for a Hungry World
Huffington Post - over 3 years
My friendship with Warren Buffett's son Howard G. Buffet goes back to 1991, when I met him through philanthropist Ray Chambers at a youth mentoring meeting in DC. During my talk on youth entrepreneurship, I put on a hair piece that one of NFTE's Newark students had made. Everyone laughed, and Howie--who was involved in local Omaha politics at that time--came up afterwards to talk to me about a letter I had once sent his father. Howie and I started a best friendship that has lasted twenty-two years and will last forever. We talked regularly on the phone, and his love of farming was so contagious that I began to learn about tractors. Howie gave me a twenty-question tractor quiz. After a month or so, I was able to pass it, to both of our delights. I visited him several times in Decatur, Illinois, where his six-hundred-acre farm is located. As we rode through the fields on his tractor, I discovered he had two passions: farming and photography. At home in Decatur, he showed me thousands ...

Food Security Raises the Obvious: Can We Feed 9.6 Billion by 2050?
Huffington Post - over 3 years
World Population Day 2013 came and went with little fanfare this year. There were no organized efforts to draw attention to the annual United Nations observance, which underscores population issues. The sole article I saw on the subject matter-of-factly noted that "global population is growing faster than expected" as U.N. demographers revised their projections upwards to 9.6 billion by 2050 and 11 billion by 2100. These new numbers are cause for concern, since that's almost a whole billion more than the 10.1 billion projected for the century's end in 2011, a mere two years earlier, points out Science Daily. But this year's U.N. mandated theme for World Population Day focused on the need for reinvigorated contraceptive efforts--and missed the most salient point of the numbers. Cowpea seeds, photo image from The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture in Nigeria (IITA) Hunger is the most pressing issue we face, especially considering those numbers: one out of every eig ...

On Buffett's 83rd Birthday, We're Celebrating 5 Of His Greatest Gifts To Humanity
Huffington Post - over 3 years
Happy 83rd birthday, Warren Buffett! To celebrate this octogenarian’s big day, we’re taking a look back at 5 of the greatest contributions to society that this billionaire CEO of Berkshire Hathaway has made. We Giving His Wealth Away (And Getting Others To Do It Too!) Along with fellow philanthropists Bill and Melinda Gates, Warren Buffett launched the Giving Pledge in 2010, which encourages the world’s richest people to commit at least half their wealth to charity while they’re still living, so that they can have more control over how their fortunes benefit people in need. The initiative currently has 114 signatories, including such noteworthy moguls as Mark Zuckerberg, Michael Bloomberg and Richard and Joan Branson. Auctioning Cool Stuff Every year, Buffett auctions off a lunch date –- a high-ticket item that fetches serious dough and benefits the Glide Foundation, a nonprofit that helps the poor and homeless in San Francisco. This year, the winnin ...

Shakira: Raising Our Voices: How We Can Collaborate To Expand Quality Education
Huffington Post - over 3 years
Though my principle occupation is that of an entertainer, I have another passion that's developed side by side over the years along with my artistic career, and that is promoting for early childhood education. I grew up in a Colombia that was divided and poverty-stricken. In Barranquilla, where I came from, it seemed as though many around me had their fate decided for them since even before birth. Those who were born poor died poor, and unfortunately, the same holds true today in Colombia as well as in many other parts of the developing world. Even as a child, I knew that seeing those kids in my hometown, living in the streets with little hope of changing their fate, was wrong. No matter what the circumstances. That indignation became the catalyst that inspired me to form my foundation Pies Descalzos (Barefoot Foundation) in Colombia when I turned 18 and had enough success that I was able to give back in what felt like a really impactful way. I teamed up with Maria Emma Mej ...

Warren Buffett discusses Berkshire without him
Financial Post - almost 4 years
OMAHA, Neb. — Warren Buffett on Saturday gave the most extensive comments to date about the future of Berkshire Hathaway Inc after he is gone, saying he still expects the conglomerate to be a partner of choice for distressed companies. Buffett, 82, also defended his plan to install his son, Howard, who has little investing experience, as nonexecutive chairman, saying the younger man’s role would be to ensure that Berkshire had the right CEO in place. During the financial crisis and its immediate aftermath, Berkshire helped prop up a number of companies, among them blue-chips such as General Electric and Goldman Sachs. Buffett’s investments were viewed by many shareholders as a seal of approval from one of the world’s most respected businessmen.
