Memorials to Neil Armstrong taking shape: Flags to fly at half-staff
MSNBC- Cosmic Log - over 4 years
The astronaut who became the first man to walk on the moon has died at the age of 82. NBC's Kristen Dahlgren reports on tributes for him and the legacy he left behind. By Alan Boyle U.S. flags will be flying at half-staff around the world "as a mark of respect for the memory of Neil Armstrong," the first man to walk on the moon, President Barack Obama proclaimed today. The half-staff tribute will take place on the day of Armstrong's burial and last until sunset. Exactly when will that be? Friday is the likeliest day — but the plans for memorials are still taking shape, two days after Armstrong died of complications from heart surgery at the age of 82. Today, NASA spokesman Bob Jacobs tweeted that a private, family memorial service would take place on Friday in Cincinnati, near the Armstrong family home in Indian Hill, Ohio. The Associated Press also said services would be held Friday. U.S. Sen. Rob Portman, an Ohio Republican who's a friend of the family, is due to give the e ...

Zoe P. Strassfield: Astronauts I Almost Met -- Attending the 2012 International Space Development Conference
Huffington Post - over 4 years
I've mentioned a few times before that when it comes to cool space events, I have a remarkable knack for being where they aren't. My home in New York just isn't that close to Florida... or Texas... or California... or Russia... or any of those far-off spots solar eclipses always seem to be visible from. (Seriously, what's up with eclipses and major population centers, the 1990 Mexico City one excepted?) And when the Space Shuttle Enterprise DID arrive in New York City back in April, I was away at college in Boston! However, last weekend, something very unusual happened -- I found myself not only in the right place at the right time, but in a better position than several of my friends. That was because the National Space Society (NSS) was holding its 2012 International Space Development Conference (ISDC) right here in Washington, D.C., just a week after I'd moved in for my Congressional internship. All I had to do to get to the conference was take a short subway ride to ...

Underwear robber burns down prison
Zimeye - almost 5 years
LONDON(ZimEye)The disgraced robber who threatened a shop keeper using a knife with his face covered in underwear, Tazviona Maluge Bhebe, started a fire from his prison cell, ZimEye can reveal. ZimEye can also reveal that Bhebe has for years been making a public claim that he is a UK trained nurse who left his ‘nursing career’ shortly before being imprisoned for another knife crime incident in 2006. “I was a mental heath nurse”, the violent man who may have practised using a false identity told friends. The Zimbabwean man, has a history of grievous bodily harm and for years held claim that he was struck off the nursing register shortly after a mental health patient died in his care. “I was struck off the register when a patient died, and they accused me of being negligent”, Bhebe said. An investigation by ZimEye has however shown that Bhebe’s name has not been on the official national nursing register before or after his 2006 crime and it was not clear at the time of writing i ...
