After claiming just seven wins in 2009, four wins in 2010 and six in 2011, Brevard volleyball's 9-1 start to the season isn't just about having an out-of-the-blue good year. No, what's happening in the program implies a stronger word: Turnaround. And it was expected.
Turnaround is a better explanation for the Lady Blue Devils, behind fourth-year coach Jessica Merrill, not just because of its veteran starters. Brevard boasts just one senior, go-to middle hitter Teal Parker, along with a solid junior class and talented freshmen and sophomores, too, which will be sure to keep the success moving forward in years to come.
"Their mentality is totally different than any other team I've coached. They want to win, they want to be there, they enjoy it and they love each other," Merrill said. "The girls set out some pretty high goals at the beginning of the season, to win conference and to get to the playoffs. We set goals each week, and so far they have met every one."
