Federal Indictment Fuels Concerns About Pa. Cyber Charters
Education Week - over 3 years
Federal investigators recently unveiled a grand jury indictment of Nicholas Trombetta, the founder and former CEO of Pennsylvania's largest cyber charter school, now alleged to have stolen nearly $1 million in public money and improperly diverted a total of $8 million to avoid federal income taxes. The Cliff Notes version of the indictment is that prosecutors allege Trombetta created a byzantine network of companies and nonprofits, then used those entities to bilk PA Cyber Charter School—and taxpayers—by billing the school for work that was never done, using school employees to do work for the other companies, and redirecting funds to himself and family members. Prosecutors also allege that Trombetta took more than $500,000 in kickbacks related to laptop purchases for students and filed false tax returns in each year between 2007 and 2011. All told, Trombetta is facing 11 fraud and tax charges. His accountant, Neal Prence, was also charged. On Friday, I talked with W ...

Audit Calls Out Risky Borrowing at SEPTA
Doylestown-Buckingham-New Britai - over 4 years
By Melissa Daniels | PA Independent HARRISBURG — A recent state audit criticizes the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority for engaging in what it considers high-risk financing. Or, as Auditor General Jack Wagner calls it, “gambling with public money.” SEPTA spent $41. 4 million in tax dollars to terminate swap deals after the transactions failed to work in its favor, according to the performance audit examining SEPTA financials from 2006 through 2009. Swap transactions are made between borrowers and banks on bond interest rates to hedge against rising interest rates. In Pennsylvania, Wagner’s office has turned a critical eye toward this type of borrowing. Too uncertain, he said.   “What we strongly recommend is that public agencies issue fixed interest rate conventional bonds that are very transparent and reliable and are understood by the decision makers and the public in terms of the dollars that are being spent,” he said. But SEPTA offic ...

Jenkins has a perfect score of 60. Each must perform one last dance before a new champion is crowned. Music for their final routines wasn’t provided until after Monday’s episode, so they had less than 24 hours to prepare their show-closing numbers. Viewer votes combined with judges’ scores will determine who takes home the ABC show’s mirror ball trophy. The other Season 14 contestants — Martina Navratilova, Gavin DeGraw, Jack Wagner, Jaleel White, Sherri Shepherd, Melissa Gilbert, Roshon Fegan, Maria Menounos and Gladys Knight — were eliminated during previous episodes.
