Judge wants trial in baby killing before year ends
Fox News - almost 4 years
A judge said Friday he wants a trial before the end of the year for a teenager charged with fatally shooting a 13-month-old baby in the face during a street robbery two weeks ago. Glynn County Superior Court Judge Stephen Kelley didn't give a tentative trial date for 17-year-old De'Marquis Elkins. District Attorney Jackie Johnson told the judge she thought investigators would have evidence ready to share with Elkins' defense lawyers next month. The judge scheduled the suspect's next hearing for May 24. "I do expect we will try this case by the end of this year," Kelley told the attorneys at the end of a bond hearing Friday morning. The judge denied Elkins' request for bond, saying he was concerned the suspect might flee if he was released. Elkins faces life in prison if convicted of malice murder in the March 21 slaying of Antonio Santiago. Police say the boy was shot in a robbery attempt. His mother, Sherry West, has said she ...

Official charged with obstruction in Ga. baby case
Fox News - almost 4 years
A coastal Georgia city official was arrested on charges of obstructing law enforcement and influencing a witness in the case involving a 13-month-old boy who was fatally shot last week. David Tucker — an attorney for Brunswick city councilman and mayor pro tem James Henry Brooks — told WTLF-TV that his client was arrested for stepping between police and the mother of 17-year-old suspect De'Marquise Elkins when police tried speaking with her during a court appearance Monday. Brooks — who also faces racketeering charges in Camden County — was being held Thursday night in the Glynn County jail on $1,256 bond for obstruction. He is also being held without bond on the charge of influencing a witness, sheriff's officials said. Brooks' arrest came as investigators were looking at a possible gang tie in the slaying of a Georgia toddler. They said Thursday that a bullet used in the shooting had been recovered. Georgia teen indicted in baby murder, second unrelated shooting
Fox News - almost 4 years
Investigators told reporters Wednesday they believe the case of a baby who was fatally shot in his stroller during an alleged robbery attempt by a teenager was random -- something they hadn't said previously. The comments came as an indictment by a Glynn County grand jury was served up charging 17-year-old De'Marquise Elkins on nine counts, including malice murder, in the slaying last Thursday of young Antonio Santiago a few blocks from his home in coastal Brunswick. According to the indictment, the teenager shot the 13-month-old baby in the face while trying to rob the child's mother. The indictment also charges the suspect with shooting another person in an unrelated robbery attempt earlier this month. Another suspect, 15-year-old Dominique Lang, was indicted on seven counts including felony murder. But the indictment specifies that authorities believe it was Elkins who shot the child and wounded his mother with a .22-caliber revolver as the boys tried to steal money from he ...

National group touts success of Native vote push
Fox News - over 4 years
Organizers of a massive get-out-the-vote campaign that targeted Native American communities across the country are considering their efforts a success. The National Congress of American Indians led the push. The group pointed Thursday to U.S. Senate races in Montana and North Dakota, as well as a voter identification ballot initiative in Minnesota, where it says the Native American turnout made a difference. The Minnesota voter ID requirement failed. NCAI Executive Director Jackie Johnson Pata says the best indicator was the fact that President Barack Obama mentioned Native Americans during his victory speech Tuesday night. She called that a "huge leap" for Indian Country. It's difficult to say at this point exactly how many American Indians and Alaska Natives showed up to the polls. But NCAI officials say Native Americans in New Mexico and Montana were registered to vote at higher rates than any other racial or ethnic group in those stat ...

Erika Soto Lamb: Trying to 'Have It All' With a Nanny
Huffington Post - over 4 years
How many tears of working parents fell on keyboards today as they started their day reading the headlines and learned of the horrific killing of Lucia and Leo Krim at the hand of the person their parents entrusted to care for them -- their nanny? Mine certainly did. It had not been much more than 15 minutes earlier that I had kissed my son goodbye, thanked his nanny and waved goodbye to both of them as the elevator door closed and I headed off to work. It's enough to be a working mother -- constantly inundated by the discussion of whether or not we can "have it all" -- and then to hear this awful tale that plants a seed of fear about how maybe you can't even trust the one person who, for those of us trying to do it, helps us keep it together. I respect every parent's choice to stay-at-home or not, but until today, I have never heard a more compelling case to do so. I had a strong urge to immediately quit my job, fire my (no-reason-to-suspect-anything-like-this-would- ...

Huron Valley Superintendent Jackie Johnston Addresses District

The following is from the Huron Valley School District and Superintendent Jackie Johnston. Dear Huron Valley Families: As my tenure with HVS winds down, I want to take this opportunity to thank the parents, students, staff and community for the high level of support provided to our District. HVS has been my home for 16 years, so moving on is bittersweet. However, I leave knowing that the District is in good hands. 10 Makeup Mistakes That Make You Age
Huffington Post - almost 5 years
Most people would agree spring skin care is about keeping it light and natural. But if you overdo your makeup every morning, you're probably not getting anywhere closer to youthful looking skin. "It’s all about balance. The darker your eyes the lighter your lips should be. The bolder your lips, the less drama you should have on your eyes. It is best to pick one area and focus on it," says makeup artist and owner of MaddPretty Makeover Studio, Jackie Johnson. For starters, Johnson says knowing your makeup mistakes is the key to fixing them. If you overuse your blush or eyeliner, try using lighter tones or playing with different textures, she says. "People make these mistakes far too often and it scares others from experimenting with their own makeup," she says. And even if spring may be about playing it safe with colours, don't be afraid to stand out. "Bold and bright are back in style for lips and eyes," she says. Here are 10 makeup mistakes that can age ...
