Scoundrels, Stoners And Elvis, Or: A Year In The Life Of Michael Shannon
Huffington Post - about 1 year
The he's-in-everything phase of Michael Shannon's career has begun. Shannon's IMDb page lists 11 films on his 2016 slate, proceeding memorable supporting work in four movies from 2015: He played a hoggish real-estate tyrant in "99 Homes" (which netted him Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award nominations), an eccentric drug dealer in dude-pal comedy "The Night Before," a gay-rights convert in "Freeheld" and a Macy's security guard in a "She's Funny That Way" cameo. When Shannon called up The Huffington Post right before Christmas, he had just finished a play in Chicago and was taking a deserved breather in New York, hanging out with his family before heading to this month's Sundance Film Festival to promote two movies. It sounds exhausting, but Shannon was in good spirits while we discussed his recent roles, including a forthcoming stint as Elvis Presley and an appearance in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice." You wrapped "99 Homes" in early 2014, and you're still talking a ...

Blythe Danner and Sam Elliott: Hot in I'll See You in My Dreams
Huffington Post - almost 2 years
Blythe Danner is a sublime and funny actress, as we've seen in the Meet the Fockers comedies and decades of movies and stage plays. In I'll See You in My Dreams she's the femme fatale of the geriatric set, sure to make you rethink 70. Vibrant, with it, her character Carol sings karaoke, plays golf, and is appropriately terrified of rats. She's lonely but not desperate, and perfect for a smooth guy named Bill, whom she begins to date. The actor Sam Elliott, with a miraculous shock of white hair, gives this mysterious stranger his joie de vivre. He's attentive to Carol and knows what he wants. Not only that, but he takes her into the water in his cabin cruiser for a moonlit dinner. When he nearly proposes, to get his feet wet, he says, she says, "Get out of that water," stunned but not uninterested. He's a good catch, and they have chemistry. At a special luncheon for the movie at Le Cirque hosted by Candice Bergen, Sam Elliott told me he'd like to be that guy. By the evening's premier ...

Tough shoot for Jake Paltrow's sci-fi 'Young Ones'
Seattle Pi - about 3 years
[...] the crew was determined to make a film that star Kodi Smit-McPhee calls "truthful, but with a twist." A hybrid of Western and sci-fi genres, Paltrow's second film, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, is a murderous tale of revenge set in the future when water is scarce and many have fled a fruitless land in search of a better life. Paltrow's first feature film, a comedy called "The Good Night," premiered at Sundance in 2007 and starred Paltrow's big sister, Gwyneth Paltrow. [...] his name only helped his career early-on, "when I got jobs as a production assistant," he said. [...] the filmmaker discovered that locking in the financial backing for his own feature was a huge struggle, especially considering his film tackles a serious environmental issue currently plaguing the West: drought.

“Young Ones”: In the bone-dry future with Michael Shannon
Salon.com - about 3 years
PARK CITY, Utah — Sometimes you come to film festivals to see movies that have “buzz,” that noxious and ineffable quality that is mentioned somewhere by Samuel Johnson (I’m not kidding about that), noteworthy accomplishments that will win awards and spark cultural debate and so on. But sometimes you want to come to places like Sundance specifically for other kinds of movies, the oddball discoveries that are inexplicable and perhaps indefensible, the flawed, ambitious and audience-alienating works that aren’t quite like anything you’ve seen before (and that you may never get a chance to see again). That brings us to Jake Paltrow’s “Young Ones,” a goofy, apocalyptic western with a ‘70s drive-in vibe that’s set several decades in the future, which I caught here on Wednesday night after being extensively arm-twisted by a publicist who knows my tastes. I’m glad I went, mostly. Continue Reading...

Sarah Jessica Parker and Blythe Danner's Frozen Assets in "The Commons of Pensacola"
Huffington Post - about 3 years
In Amanda Peet's fine playwriting debut for Manhattan Theater Club at City Center, "The Commons of Pensacola," Sarah Jessica Parker and Blythe Danner are daughter and mother locked in a domestic dilemma: Judith (Danner) is forced to scale down as her husband has been jailed for a Madoff-mode crime. Becca (Parker) arrives for Thanksgiving with a boyfriend much her junior. Her sister Ali (Ali Marsh) has broken off from their mother for mysterious reasons, so her daughter Lizzy (Zoe Levin) must sneak a visit to grandma now residing in a generic Florida condo. All would be cozy, complete with a fold out couch, except that the wrong couple ends up sleeping there. Well directed by Lynne Meadow, Parker's Becca deftly guards the freezer in a death grip when her sister arrives, and stands face frozen as certain betrayals threaten her place in the world. Danner is accustomed to playing ditzy, as she did in Noel Coward's "Tonight at 8:30," at East Hampton's Guild Hall this past summer. A little ...
