Murder accused tells jury he was not part of any plan for street attack
Yorkshire Evening Post - about 4 years
A mAn accused of murder denied he was recruited as a getaway driver for a street attack. Nadeem Rashid told a jury at Leeds Crown Court yesterday (Feb 4) he only became aware something had happened when his co-accused Aaron Smith and Joe Church returned to his car with blood on them. When he asked what had occurred Church said Aaron had been fighting and a guy got slashed on the back. The prosecution claim Smith and Church attacked Joshua Hirst near his home in Grove Street, Mirfield who later died from knife injuries to his neck. Rashid said he was “cruising” with the pair when Smith suddenly told him to stop and went off without saying anything. Church had followed telling him to wait. “Were you aware of any plan to get Josh Hirst,” asked his counsel Jamie Hill QC. “No,” he replied. “Were you aware somebody might get seriously hurt or killed,” asked Mr Hill. “No,” said Rashid. Church, 21, of Redlands Close, Mirfield, Smith, 19, of Saville Street, Emley, and Rashid, 21, of L ...

Keeneland Barn Notes - April 20, 2012
Lex 18 - almost 5 years
Rather than worry about the prospects of a cold, damp weekend in Kentucky, trainer Michael Matz opted to work Chadds Ford Stable's Union Rags on Friday morning at Keeneland. The millionaire son of Dixie Union responded with a half-mile work in :47.40 under regular exercise rider Peter Brette. Working on his own, Union Rags posted fractions of :12, :24, :35.80 and out five furlongs in 1:00 and six furlongs in 1:15 (click here for work video). "I thought he went well," Matz said. "It was nothing spectacular, but he did it nice and galloped out fine. He was doing a two-minute lick before he got to the half-mile pole. It was a good work and we will ask more of him in his next work." That next work would come at Churchill Downs next Saturday or Sunday depending on weather according to Matz, who said Union Rags would ship to Louisville most likely after the middle of next week. Matz, who gave his 2006 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner, Barbaro, some pre-Derby training at Keeneland, was glad ...

Council Upholds Majority of Wireless Appeal
Burlingame Patch - almost 5 years
The City Council overturned the approval of six of eight applications for wireless antennas filed by ExteNet Monday, upholding an appeal filed by residents and saying the wireless proposals are too intrusive. A community group of about 300 residents called Action Burlingame led by Doug Luftman and Mark Wilson filed an appeal last week asking the council deny eight applications from ExteNet, saying the company failed to prove a significant gap in coverage and thoroughly examine alternatives for providing service. Burlingame’s Public Works department approved the applications earlier this year. Attorney Jamie Hill, speaking on ExteNet’s behalf, stated the company performed all the steps necessary proving coverage gaps and is protected under state and federal law, which allows cities to regulate wireless communication facilities based on aesthetics, but not if those concerns prevent a company from providing service. However, Luftman and Wilson argued that as a provider on ante ...

N.C. spelunkers find 50-carat emerald
ajc - almost 5 years
There’s emeralds in them thar hills! These emeralds donated to a Raleigh museum would look similar to those found by amateurs in Hiddenite, N.C. (AP Photo/The News & Observer) Or at least there was, until intrepid, amateur gem seekers stumbled across a treasure trove of fancy rocks in North Carolina worth tens of thousands of dollars. ABC News reports Libby and Kevin Barrieault were the first to strike non-literal gold in a closed mine in Hiddenite, N.C. They paid mine owner Jamie Hill $25 apiece to explore his North American Emerald Mine last Friday, but are sure to get their money back after selling a 50-carat gem Kevin found under a rock. They’ll be selling it on eBay. Starting bid: $8,000. The next day, Hill let Terry Lofgren and her fiance John Kehoe explore his property and they too found jewels, including a 30-carat emerald and 240 more carats of loose emeralds. The Lofgren’s haul is expected to be worth $40,000. Hill, who’s not let anyone in the family mine in ...
