Soundcast Reviews: Dead Pilots Society & The Smartest Man In The World
Huffington Post - 4 months
Dead Pilots Society Epi2: Only Child One of soundcasting's new scripted series features scripts not intended for the medium. Dead Pilots Society, created and presented by TV writers Andrew Reich (Friends, Worst Week) and Ben Blacker (The Adventures of Puss In Boots, Thrilling Adventure Hour), offers us live readings of television comedy pilots that were bought or optioned but never produced. This bottomless well of material benefits by having some amazing comedians and comedic actors reading the words of some equally amazing comedy writers. A great case in point is the second installment, Only Child. Written by (and intended to star) the hilariously dry and droll John Hodgman in a show about a hilariously dry and droll John Hodgman, age 14. Hodgman showed up at last January's San Francisco Sketchfest to read the part of himself written by himself and, after an interview with producer Blacker about how the pro0ject came about and why it went away, he and a cast read the pilot f ...

Etta Devine and Gabriel Diani on Diani & Devine Meet the Apocalypse: Mighty Movie Podcast
Huffington Post - over 3 years
The comedy team of Etta Devine and Gabriel Diani already have a bit of notoriety attached to them: Their Kickstarter campaign for The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Robotic Edition) -- which proposed to publish an edition of the Mark Twain classic with all occurrences of the N-word replaced with the word "robot" -- attracted no little attention and enough supporters to not only push them to their goal, but well beyond. With that success under their belt, they've embarked on a less unorthodox, but hopefully just as entertaining, Kickstarter campaign for a new end-of-the-world comedy, Diani & Devine Meet the Apocalypse. With a solid technical crew and a cast that includes Deep Space Nine's Armin Shimerman, Buffy's Harry Groener, and Legend of Korra's Janet Varney, the project is already well-positioned to bring some mirth to unrestrained devastation, disease, and despair. Since I'm presently running my own Kickstarter campaign, I was eager to talk with people who had successfully t ...

Go Inside Neil Patrick Harris' 'Puppet Dreams'
Huffington Post - over 4 years
File this one under "things you never knew you wanted." Nerdist has premiered a web series of Neil Patrick Harris interacting with puppets. Titled "Neil's Puppet Dreams," the video premiered Tuesday. The first episode shows Harris and his adorable husband, David Burtka, from the viewpoint of a crib -- in 2010, the couple became parents to twins, Gideon Scott and Harper Grace, via surrogate. Harris puts stuffed animal puppets in the crib to appease the crying baby before transitioning into his own dream sequence filled with puppets. "Hi, I'm Neil and I sleep a lot," Harris tells the camera. "When I dream, I dream in puppet." The four-minute video (shown above), features a pajama-clad Harris being sung a lullaby by the three puppets. Vulture reports that the puppets are from Jim Henson Studios. "Jim Henson was the only piece of fan mail I ever wrote when I was a little kid," Harris said in an interview with EW. "I’m a nerdy, geeky fan of 'Labyrinth' and 'Dark Crysta ...

Marlee Matlin: Ann Coulter Should Apologize For Offensive Obama Tweet
Huffington Post - over 4 years
Oscar-winning actress Marlee Matlin sounded off on HuffPost Live Wednesday about conservative pundit Ann Coulter's controversial reference to President Barack Obama as a "retard" after Monday night's presidential debate. Matlin, who lost her hearing as a young child and talks with the help of an interpreter, described the pernicious effect such derogatory language can have on children -- especially those with special needs. Retard is an offensive reference to a mentally handicapped person, according to the Apple dictionary, often used as a general term of abuse. Said Matlin: I know what it's like to be growing up, called "deaf and mute" and "deaf and dumb." They're words that are very degrading and demeaning to people who are deaf and hard of hearing. It's almost … it's almost libelous, if you want to say that. And it's absolutely absurd that someone in the position that she has … to be able to use the R-word, and to refer to our president. It shouldn't even be used. ...

WATCH: The Shocking Reason This Woman Split From Her Husband After Decades Of Marriage
Huffington Post - over 4 years
The news that Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman were getting divorced after decades of marriage came as a surprise to many people, and forced them to wonder why a growing number of post-50 couples are deciding not to stay with each other into their sunset years. HuffPost Live host Janet Varney hosted a discussion of this phenomenon recently with a panel of guests, including Lola Barnett who said she and her ex-husband seemed like "the perfect couple" to outsiders, but that ultimately "no one knows what's going on with [another couple's] relationship." Barnett blamed drugs for their eventual split. "We were both into recreational drugs on a regular basis, and it led to a lot of bad decisions on our part, which ultimately broke down the honor and the trust and respect we had for each other," she told Varney. "My belief is when you don't have a strong foundation, then everything else just falls apart. And it really did." On the bright side, Barnett says her life has "blo ...

Erin Brockovich: 'Let's Stop The Bullsh*t'
Huffington Post - over 4 years
"Let's stop the bullshit and get down to finding some solutions to our problems," Erin Brockovich recently declared on HuffPost Live. The consumer advocate and environmental activist recently joined host Janet Varney on HuffPost Live to adress water issues ranging from the fracking controversy to droughts plaguing the United States. The debate over fracking has heated up in the U.S., particularly in New York, where a decision on the drilling process is expected to be made soon. Proponents of fracking in New York have argued that it would bring jobs to economically depressed regions. For example, some residents faced with a struggling dairy industry may see fracking as a way to save their land. Others, such as New Yorkers Against Fracking founder Sandra Steingraber, have argued that “Sending a polluting industry into our most economically impoverished communities is a violation of environmental justice.” Anti-fracking activists have expressed concerns over t ...

TV: Interview: The Legend Of Korra lead Janet Varney talks fun with fandom and strong female leads
A.V. Club - over 4 years
The Legend Of Korra’s Saturday-morning debut on Nickelodeon in April was watched by 4.5 million people—a million more than watched the season-five première of Mad Men a couple weekends earlier. Korra is the sequel to Avatar: The Last Airbender, an enormously popular three-season Nickelodeon cartoon set in the same world, where specially talented people can “bend,” or control and shape, either water, earth, air, or fire via martial-arts moves. (The universally loathed M. Night Shyamalan film The Last Airbender adapted the series’ first season.) The original show picked up a hugely devoted adult fan base in its three-year run, and those fans have stuck around to debate the merits of the new Avatar, Korra—a teenage girl who gracefully dodges pretty much every stereotype about female cartoon characters. As Korra wraps up its first season with a double episode on Saturday, June 23, The A.V ... Read more

Moontower Comedy Fest closes brilliantly with Wanda Sykes and improv from Theme Park
Laugh Spin - almost 5 years
AUSTIN – If parting is such sweet sorrow, than the departure of the Moontower Comedy & Oddity Fest feels a lot like scarfing down Girl Scout cookies while sobbing. “Next year, we plan to make this the second largest comedy festival in North America,” proclaimed one of the organizers proudly, and indeed, I can’t conceive of any reason why such a goal shouldn’t be met. That said, putting an end to the fest’s inaugural year arrived in a power packed explosive comedy punch: the sort of memorable conclusion that required not just one legendary superstar, but two. First off, improv fans were treated to a goofy, magnificently weird set from make-it-up-as-you-go all stars Theme Park, comprised of Oscar Nunez and Cole Stratton (pictured to the right) and Jessica Makinson and Janet Varney. And that’s where our first legend comes in to play: setting the topics for riffing was none other than Laraine Newman, original Saturday Night Live cast member and founding comedienne of renowned LA impr ...
