So Little Time, So Many Possibilities
Huffington Post - about 1 year
A brilliant idea. That's what most creatives crave. For some, great ideas come naturally. For others, they arrive on a cloud of fortuitous timing, often resting on a foundation of intuition and introspection. Once a brilliant idea is within an artist's grasp, the next question is what to do with it. Should a creative person take it in one direction? Two directions? Three or four or more? Should an artist present a brilliant idea to trusted collaborators who can join in on bringing it to fruition? Or should an individual recognize that a seemingly brilliant idea might be more than s/he can handle? These are important questions to ask. While many in the arts stress that one learns the most through one's failures, two recent artistic mishaps drew lots of attention. Produced by the African Community Theatre under Kent State University's Department of Pan-African Studies, a recent production of The Mountaintop (a controversial play by Katori Hall) featured two actors alte ...

The Heidi Chronicles: Pursuing It All
Huffington Post - almost 2 years
Give Wendy Wasserstein credit: Her play The Heidi Chronicles brilliantly toes the line between remaining relevant to new, contemporary audiences while simultaneously exemplifying how far we've come from tumultuous years of inequality for women. The play in that way demonstrates in 2015 how despite all the progress we've made in America, there are still cultural effects that must be grappled with and dealt with for the sake of the next generation. Heidi Holland, played by Elisabeth Moss, doesn't start out -- much less set out -- as a born leader. But her unflinching dedication to making something of herself, and raising the profile of women before her in the art world, is commendable and admirable. As Heidi watches her friends grow up and move on, she stays committed to the hope and dream that she can establish herself and her cause without making concessions. What's so remarkable about Heidi is how hard she is on herself without lashing out against those who seem to be leaving her ...

First Nighter: Wendy Wasserstein's "Heidi Chronicles" in A+ Revival
Huffington Post - almost 2 years
With The Heidi Chronicles Wendy Wasserstein wrote her most popular -- and I'd argue -- her best play. My opinion certainly hasn't changed as of the current revival, at The Music Box, with Elisabeth Moss giving a performance of depth and breadth in the title role. If anything, I'd claim my regard for the 1989 Pulitzer Prize-winning (and almost every other award in sight) play is even more solid now. This isn't to say that every aspect of Pam MacKinnon's production is absolutely right, but before I get to that, what has to be stressed is that Wasserstein's survey of a representative upper-middle-class woman's experiences of American culture during the years 1964 to 1987 is as close to perfection as anyone could hope to get. When Heidi Holland, studying for a degree in art history, is first seen, she's at a college dance with best-friend-forever Susan Johnston (Ali Ahn) where she meets admirer Peter Patrone (Bryce Pinkham). When next seen, she's at a Eugene McCarthy for President f ...

'Orange Is The New Black' Season 2 Gets A Premiere Date
Huffington Post - about 3 years
"Orange Is The New Black" Season 2 will premiere June 6 on Netflix! Netflix announced the premiere date as the credits rolled during the last episode of "House Of Cards" Season 2. Little is known about "Orange Is The New Black" Season 2, but the first season -- based on the book of the same name -- followed Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling) through her prison stay for smuggling drug money across international lines for her lover Alex (Laura Prepon). Ten years after her relationship with Alex ended, Piper is now engaged to Larry (Jason Biggs). When she goes to serve her time, she finds herself in prison with Alex and a whole slew of amazing, hilarious and possibly deranged characters. We know that Laura Prepon will be back as Alex for at least four episodes and that Lori Petty will join the cast. But until June 6, we'll just have to speculate about what happens in Litchfield Penitentiary.

11 Things You Didn't Know About Costco
Huffington Post - about 3 years
Is it truly the "anti-Walmart?" Often much less maligned than its retail warehouse counterparts, Costco has developed a sort of cult following among thrifty shoppers and supporters of workers' rights alike. But if you're one of these wholesale superfans, how much do you truly know about the company? You may have heard that the first Costco warehouse opened in Seattle and that their Kirkland brand was originally supposed to be "Seattle Signature." Perhaps you're also aware that the company spends no money on advertisements, instead hoping programs like their "treasure hunts," which feature steep but limited-time discounts on luxury -- and occasionally outlandish -- items, will keep customers coming back. But if you're a true die-hard fan of the shopping mecca, you'll need to read on for the true treasures. Time to earn that Gold Star! Image: Instagram account @ambermarielove3 1. Costco is actually one of America's largest pizza chains. Although Costco's current CEO, Craig Je ...
