The Gospel According to 'Ye: Kanye West, The Life of Pablo, and Authentic Christianity
Huffington Post - 2 months
"Kanye's best prodigy/He ain't signed me, but he's proud of me" -Chance the Rapper Blessings (Reprise) "I made Jesus Walks, I ain't never goin' ta hell ... " -Kanye West Otis Following a string of bizarre behavior last month--hallmarked by a protracted, stream of conscious tirade targeting Beyoncé and Jay Z, signaling support for Donald Trump's looming presidency, and abruptly ending the Sacramento stop of his Life of Pablo tour--Kanye West voluntarily submitted to hospitalization and a psychiatric evaluation, citing sleep deprivation and exhaustion. While officials at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles discharged Kanye West about two weeks ago, his reported bout with depression and paranoia caused him to cancel the remainder of his North American tour dates, in addition to the European leg of his tour. The entire episode has caused people to reflect on the "tragedy and triumph" of Kanye West's storied career, and its precipitous decline. Ostensibly, the ...

Adventures of Stretch + Bobbito on the Wheels of Steel
Huffington Post - over 1 year
Rewinding back to the 1990s, Stretch and Bobbito: Radio That Changed Lives documents the lives and musical loves of DJs Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Garcia whose Columbia University radio show (WKCR) inspired people across the world to embrace the best beats, the illest freestyles and the dopest emerging rappers who'd go on to change hip-hop history. Beginning October 25, 1990, they broadcast every Thursday night for eight years. "I loved the show from the get go," artist André Leroy Davis, who used to draw his The Source magazine caricature feature The Last Word while listening to the show on Thursday nights recalled. "If you wanted to hear hip-hop uncut, then that was the show to play. It was on in the middle of the night and went until five in the morning. I was one of those people who would tape the show and listen to it again." Indeed, as Stretch and Bobbito would soon find, there were legions of fans across the globe doing the exact same thing. Although the show ended in 19 ...

In Hip-Hop, Kendrick Lamar Is King
Huffington Post - over 3 years
I let it marinate for about 48 hours. I didn't want to know why Kendrick Lamar's name was trending on Yahoo several weeks ago. Initially, I thought hip-hop's new-age liberator had gotten in the kind of ill-fated trouble that seems to haunt so many who step into the ravage burrow we have decorously titled showbiz. Indeed, the 26-year-old from Compton had gotten himself into a wade of hot water, but for entirely different reasons. It was for his panic/love/hate/joy/sorrow/complexity-inducing guest verse on Big Sean's unreleased track "Control." I ingested the ad nauseum-esque hoopla surrounding Kendrick's verse before I finally decided to dive in. Over a mantra-syncopated beat by legendary producer No I.D., Kendrick bats two-hole on the track, and created one of the most buzz worthy verses that have incorporated the conversation regarding the competition sentiment of hip-hop in years. It was a polarizing verse; some MC's were impressed, Lupe Fiasco was not. Some of the MCs mentioned und ...

Ryan Leslie Calls Jay Electronica's Upcoming Act II 'Incredible'
MTV News - over 4 years
By Rob Markman Jay Electronica’s official debut album Act II: Patents of Nobility (The Turn) has a lot to live up to. The Roc Nation’s LP has been in the works for a couple of years, but the lucky ones who have heard it do nothing but sing its praises. Ryan Leslie for one, is particularly excited. "I think that his album is really incredible," R. Les said of Act II when he appeared on Wednesday's "RapFix Live." Leslie hooked up with Jay Elec like how most artists hook up these days, through social media. "He found me. He found me on Twitter," Ryan said. "I responded to the tweet and next thing you know, I was out on a farm in England and that's where he was recording." The "Diamond Girl" singer secured a verse from Jay for his Les is More LP which will be out on October 22. While most artists use email and computer technology to record collaborations separately, Leslie and Elec vibed in the studio together. "We collaborated, I put some things down and worked on some mus ...

What It's Like To Work For Jay-Z
Huffington Post - over 4 years
It's possible Rita Ora -- Jay-Z's new Next Big Thing -- has already been stuck in your head. After all, she's the charming British singer who took the words "party and bullshit" from Biggie and turned them into "How We Do (Party)," a song that's catchy enough to make it the "Party in the U.S.A." for the throw-your-diamonds-in-the-sky crowd. It's true that, like One Direction, Paloma Faith and a whole host of Brit-pop artists looking to carve out a fan base in the States, Ora is British. But that's probably the least interesting thing about her. It might be the least interesting thing to her as well. In an interview on the set of her MTV "Unplugged" taping, Ora handily dismissed the notion that some grand trend or movement was to blame for her newfound success. "I literally just think that right now, great music is coming from Britain," she said. It makes sense that Ora's more interested in stunting around on music video sets than chatting about British artists who prec ...

Jay Electronica Spotted With Heiress Kate Rothschild In London
MTV News - over 4 years
By Carter Maness Jay Electronica is certainly one of hip-hop's biggest enigmas, but his recent role in the dissolution of a British socialite marriage between heiress Kate Rothschild and billionaire financier son Ben Goldsmith continues to confound. Rothschild and Jay are now an official item, and the heiress was recently seen leaving Electronica's Chelsea apartment along with the rapper. With her rescue dog in tow as well, the couple walked to work together as tabloids documented the scene. The Daily Mail, always on the case, reported on the dissolution of the couple's eight-year marriage, claiming that Goldsmith found explicit texts and emails between Rothschild and Electronica. This apparently led to an altercation where police were summoned to the couple's mansion in the city's affluent Kensington neighborhood. Goldsmith was subsequently arrested and released without a charge, yet he quickly moved to file for divorce because of adultery. Fans are hoping this unlikely love ...

All Hip Hop - over 4 years
(AllHipHop News) Rapper Jay Electronica took to Twitter earlier today and threatened Ben Goldsmith, the soon-to-be ex-husband of Rothschild heiress Kate Rothschild. Jay E. took to Twitter to address reports that he is having an affair with Kate Rothschild, who runs Roundtable Records, a UK-based label. Goldsmith, who is the son of billionaire Sir James Goldsmith, married Rothschild in 2003. But the pair announced they will divorce today, after allegations of infidelity from both sides. Earlier in the year, Goldsmith was arrested and cited for assault for slapping Rothschild at their mansion. The New-Orleans rapper, who is currently living in London, was the aggressor via Twitter. “@BJGoldsmith: ‘ben you need to stop going to the press w these b******t stories. Jay Electronica involved in breakup of U.K. banking-dynasty marriage
LATimes - over 4 years
It's been an intense time for hip-hop love triangles, and you may need a flowchart to unpack this latest one. It's a labyrinthine tale in which one half of a U.K. banking power-couple was caught in an yearlong affair with the American rapper Jay Electronica. The story is pretty much a modern rap-world version of a "Downton Abbey" subplot: Kate Rothschild and Ben Goldsmith, each scions of insanely wealthy British families, married in 2003. Rothschild, heir to a major banking fortune, had her own career as a music producer when she met Electronica, a rapper on Jay-Z's Roc Nation label who had previously fathered a child with Erykah Badu. The two reportedly carried on an affair for a year before Goldsmith, a financier and clean-tech investor, got wind of the affair. Goldsmith and Rothschild are divorcing and were engaged in a heated (and now deleted) Twitter spat, in which Rothschild described her relationship with Electronica thusly: "As for Jay Electronica... he saved my life ...

All Hip Hop - over 4 years
Last week, news broke that Jay Electronica was in the middle of a huge divorce between a powerful and filthy rich “illuminati couple,” Ben Goldsmith and Kate Rothschild. To bring you up to speed, Kate Goldsmith is an heiress of the Rothschild banking family, who has had infamous links to the Illuminati. Ben is her husband who is currently filing for divorce from Kate because he found out that Jay and Kate were having an affair and found illicit and sexy text messages to back up his suspicions. Well, now Kate is coming to the defense of Jay Electronica and has even said that he “saved my life in many ways.” Check out the messages Kate posted on her Twitter page below: Wow, the chick is going through a divorce and is accused of cheating with him, and she still defends Jay Elect and even praises him on the last tweet above. In the words of illseed, “Jay Elec went in and snagged him an heiress.” Jay Electronica also recently tweeted the photo above of Kate accompaniyng him on a ...

(AllHipHop News) Juvenile returned to S.O.B.’s in New York City recently for his first solo performance in eight years, where he not only performed some of hits, but he brought the energy to a packed house of his biggest East Coast fans. Juvenile left his recording home of Cash Money Records in 2003, following the release of his platinum-certified sixth studio album, Juve the Great, to create his own label, UTP. Ties with Cash Money were never fully severed, however, as Juvenile, with hits like “Back That Azz Up,” “Slow Motion,” and “Ha,” has gone on record with AllHipHop.com to say that he will be working with Lil Wayne on his upcoming 10th studio album, Rejuvenation, along with DJ Khaled and Drake. Having been pushed back several times, Rejuvenation’s delays may have been made so Juvenile can secure other heavy-hitters such as Jadakiss, Jay-Z, and Jay Electronica, who Juve told XXL is “off the muthaf*ckin’ chain.” Currently, Rejuvenation is scheduled for a June 19 release on ...

Jeff Weiss' piece for the L.A. Weekly, "Jay Electronica: Much Better Than His Name Would Suggest", acknowledged that the rapper could be fairly described as "one of the most buzzed about rappers of 2008", but attempted to temper the hype somewhat, describing Act 1 as "ambitious, wildly original, if not slightly pretentious", while endorsing only to an extent the comparisons URB had made (referencing an "abstract rhyming style") to rappers like Nas and Pharoahe Monch.
More Details Hide Details Jay Electronica has yet to release a full-length album, but he has released two official singles to date, "Exhibit A (Transformations)" and "Exhibit C" According to URB, Act II: Patents of Nobility will feature Nas, and will be the second of a putative trilogy. According to a Filter TV interview, Jay Electronica has partnered with Decon to release his debut project. It is being described as a multi-media release and footage from the project which was partially shot in Nepal and Dubai has begun to surface online. The first clip to leak is titled "Dear Moleskine" and can be found on YouTube, the track was produced by Just Blaze and the clip was directed by Jason Goldwatch from Decon. In June 2009, Decon and Jay's "The Dogon Society" released "Exhibit A (Transformations)" digitally. "Exhibit C" was released on iTunes December 16, 2009 and quickly shot to the top 10 of the iTunes Hip-Hop charts.

Jay Electronica first gained significant attention through Act 1: Eternal Sunshine (The Pledge), made available on a MySpace page in 2007.
More Details Hide Details It is fifteen continuous minutes of music, without drums, built from Jon Brion's soundtrack to the film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. There are five segments or movements marked by changes in music and mood, raps by Electronica, and occasional snippets of sampled dialogue including scenes from Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. The first segment is a spoken word piece by Just Blaze and Erykah Badu describing Electronica over piano music. The nature of the piece of music, along with the nature of its appearance, led to a slow build-up of interest in Electronica as an enigmatic figure. Songs circulating online as the Style Wars EP gained wider circulation, and other songs, such as the dream-inspired "Dimethyltryptamine", appeared. In January 2008, Giles Peterson's 90-minute Gilles Peterson Worldwide podcast was devoted to the rapper. Hiphopdx.com in 2008 called him "arguably the most talked about new emcee last year... at times more like a myth or urban legend than an actual rapper", and URB ran a cover story on the artist under the banner "Jay Electronica: A Spotless Mind:: An MC’s mystery revealed", which referred to his wanderings as his being "like some sort of hip-hop Jack Kerouac".

In November 2010, it was announced Jay Electronica had signed Jay Z's Roc Nation record label. Thedford was born on September 19, 1976, in the Magnolia Projects of New Orleans, renowned for having some of the highest crime rates in the country before being flooded during Hurricane Katrina. Thedford began rapping after hearing his uncle rhyme. By the age of 19 Jay Electronica left New Orleans to pursue his musical career. Living a mostly nomadic lifestyle, he found refuge in cities such as Philadelphia, Baltimore, Detroit, New York, and briefly in Atlanta. From club to club, and stage to stage, Electronica had gotten booed off and denied because of his Southern accent and slang. "In my earlier years from when I first left home, I was embarrassed from being from the South," Thedford stated. "Not in general, but as a rapper because all of the negative things that people in the States put on the South." Electronica’s career really took off in the city of Detroit when he linked up with Detroit native Johnnie Last.
