Huffington Post - 5 months
We’ve seen a sexy Trump costume and we’ve seen a sexy Ken Bone costume, but this Halloween costume is easily the least sexy one we’ve seen. Good thing Hugh Grant knows About a Boy! The famed British bachelor, 53, is now the father of three love children after Swedish TV producer Anna Elisabet Eberstein secretly gave birth to a baby boy in September 2013. A copy of a birth certificate obtained by Us Weekly confirms that the child was born at Queen Charlotte's and Chelsea Hospital in London on Sept. 3; though the baby's first name is not listed, his surname is "Grant," and the actor's full name, Hugh John Mungo Grant, is listed as the father on the document. Grant's rep did not return Us Weekly's requests for comment. (The Sun was the first to report this news.) Russell Brand: Rupert Murdoch 'Animatronic Al-Qaida Recruitment Poster'
Huffington Post - over 3 years
Russell Brand really, really doesn't like Rupert Murdoch and Murdoch's newspapers. The actor tore into Murdoch and his media empire in a Guardian piece on Friday. The impetus was a Sun on Sunday story earlier this month that claimed Brand cheated on his girlfriend Jemima Khan. "The pain, disruption and distress, that the Sun inflicted by falsely claiming that I cheated on my girlfriend, in the context of such awesome corruption, is a pale liver-spot on the back of Murdoch's glabrous claw," Brand wrote on Friday. In the piece, he called Murdoch "an animatronic al-Qaida recruitment poster," and compared his Sun title to Hitler: Rupert Murdoch, an animatronic al-Qaida recruitment poster, in his private letter to Sun staff, after the News of the World was briefly closed for a makeover (not through remorse, or shame, no, because they couldn't sell advertising space and because he wanted to launch the Sun on Sunday anyway because it's cheaper to run one title than two – some guys g ...

Russell Brand Confirms He IS In A Relationship During His Conversation With HuffPostUK, But Is He Also A Misogynist?
Huffington Post - over 3 years
Russell Brand may have turned political revolutionary in recent times, but the biggest transformation may be happening behind closed doors for the ‘actor’ comedian. “I’m in a relationship at the moment,” the oft-awarded Shagger of the Year cheerfully reported to a packed crowd during his Conversation with HuffPostUK on Monday evening. And as he was leaving, he added by way of afterthought, “I’m off to see my girlfriend.” This may or may not be a reference to his rumoured squeeze, Jemima Khan, with whom he was pictured in recent times in both London and New York. Or, according to yesterday’s headlines, TOWIE actress Ferne McCann, reported to be meeting up with the Lothario in New York. Brand appeared to pour cold water on this particular rumour, however, tweeting earlier in the day, “I've literally never seen this human." However, a bit of the old Rusty was still on show during the night’s chat, when Brand was questioned on many topics by the HuffPostUK’s Political Director – po ...

St. John and St. Julian
Huffington Post - over 3 years
For three years now, Julian Assange has ridden the global imagination as the pale and persecuted information knight of our times. Assange's latest target is The Fifth Estate, the movie about WikiLeaks in which he is played by a frumious Benedict Cumberbatch. He has denounced it as a "massive propaganda attack," for, among other things, lying about him dying his hair. Despite all the coverage he's received, Assange remains an enigma. Who is this Australian hacker with skin as smooth as monumental alabaster -- just that one shade short of transparent? On the one hand he has exposed war crimes, creepy government surveillance, corruption, and torture, but on the other, he has simply refused to show up in a Swedish court to answer to two charges of sexual assault. Assange has been compared to all kinds of characters from history and fiction. To someone from a Stieg Larsson thriller and to the Russian anarchist Mikhail Bakunin. To Neo from The Matrix and -- Great Snakes! -- Tintin. T ...

Fiyaz Mughal: The Rising Scourge of Anti-Muslim Hatred
Huffington Post - about 4 years
A five-year old girl sent flying from the bonnet of a car, left unconscious in the road by a hit-and-run driver. A pregnant woman watching her husband being beaten up by her neighbour's boyfriend, their children terrorised by constant abuse. A family forced from their home in Nottinghamshire, leaving behind graffiti and a ham-wrapped cross on their doorstep. Or a young woman who had faeces thrust onto her hijab in a south London street. All these and more are just some of the 632 (and rising) cases reported during the first year of 'Tell MAMA', the UK's national anti-Muslim hate crime project, which my organisation Faith Matters runs. We suspect that these are just a fraction of the total number of anti-Muslim incidents affecting ordinary Muslims up and down the country. Our work within TELL MAMA reveals a disturbing picture of low-level anti-Muslim harassment: incidents in the workplace, in the street, between neighbours and particularly online, which may not always hit ...

Muslim helpline reveals majority of faith attacks on women
Guardian (UK) - about 4 years
Tell MAMA, for victims of Islamophobia, logged more than 630 incidents during its first 12 months The majority of Muslims physically attacked, harassed or intimidated because of their faith are women, according to the first results from the UK's official helpline for victims of Islamophobia. More than 630 incidents were logged during the first 12 months of the helpline, launched in an attempt to quantify the scale and nature of anti-Muslim violence in Britain. Some of the most egregious attacks recorded include a family being forced from their Nottinghamshire home, a five-year-old girl knocked over by a hit-and-run driver and a Somali lady who had dog faeces placed on her head by a white man while shopping in south London. The attacks, collated by the helpline, Tell MAMA (Measuring Anti-Muslim Attacks), show that Muslim women were targeted in 58% of all incidents. The majority of physical assaults committed in the street were on women wearing Islamic clothing, with most victims d ...

DOCUMENTARY: Sex, Lies And The Catholic Church, The Very Week Pope Benedict Resigns...
Huffington Post - about 4 years
Alex Gibney must be wondering what strange influence he wields from his documentary-making fingertips. The last few weeks have seen the premiere of his film 'Wikileaks: We Steal Secrets', exploring the strange world of Julian Assange and his cohorts, just as its executive producer Jemima Khan expresses her frustrations with the subject of the film she helped fund. Alex Gibney's film asks questions of the highest echelons of the Catholic Church Now, his documentary exploring the abuse of power in the Catholic Church - all the way to the highest levels in Rome - is being released the very week the Pope announces his resignation, an event unprecedented in 600 years of goings-on at the Vatican. And Gibney has told the Hollywood Reporter he thinks the Pontiff's departure from office is most certainly "inextricably linked" to the scandals he explores in his film. Read more here... Budrus Wins - 'A Heart-Warming David and Goliath Tale'
Huffington Post - over 4 years
A documentary charting how Israeli activists and Palestinian villagers came together in a peaceful struggle to keep down the wall being built around them beat stiff competition last night in Berlin to be named the winner of this year's Puma Creative Impact Award, for the film deemed to have made most the most significant social impact in the last year. Budrus school children - everyone in the village was affected 'Budrus' initially sought to answer the question posed by the film-makers 'Where is the Palestinian Gandhi?' What they found was a throng of people furious that their livelihoods, their decades-long rituals and their community relationships were all being threatened by the wall that the Israeli state has been constructing since 1992, in defence, it says, against suicide bombers. The villagers young and old risked their lives to both participate in and film the defiantly peaceful protest that followed. 'Budrus' had its premiere in the village that gave it ...

Imran Khan’s troubled march
The Express Tribune Blogs - over 4 years
The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has once again muddied the waters for the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and issued a couple of contradictions of the ‘permission’ earlier given by the TTP chief, Hakimullah Mehsud, hiding somewhere in North Waziristan, in fear of drones that killed his cousin Qari Hussain, the ‘manufacturer’ of suicide bombers. The durable spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan has repeated his earlier objections that “Imran Khan is a liberal, secular person and so is his party; we deny all baseless news stating that we have offered to provide him security for his so-called peace rally. His so-called peace march is not in sympathy with drone-hit Muslims; instead, it is a try by him to increase his political height”. He went on to propound a rather complex definition of Pakistani political parties, in power and out of it, and their unsuitability as rulers of an Islamic state. Then another more scary statement emanated from Jaishul Khilafa ...

Taliban to debate Pakistani cricket star's protest
Fox News - over 4 years
Taliban leaders will hold a meeting to decide whether a Pakistani cricket star-turned-politician will be allowed to hold a planned march to their tribal stronghold to protest U.S. drone strikes, the militant group's spokesman said Thursday. Ahsanullah Ahsan said the Pakistani Taliban consider Imran Khan to be an "infidel" since he has described himself as a liberal -- a term they associate with a lack of religious belief. But the spokesman denied a threat reported earlier by The Associated Press that the group would kill Khan if he holds the demonstration he has planned for September. The Pakistani Taliban leadership council "will decide what to do a week before his arrival and will announce it," Ahsan told the AP by email. "It's sure and clear that we don't have any sympathy with Imran Khan, neither do we need his sympathy, as he himself claims to be a liberal, and we see liberals as infidels." The AP reported Wednesday that the Taliban would target Khan with suicide bombers ...

Taliban threaten to kill Pakistani cricket-star-turned-politician Imran Khan
Fox News - over 4 years
The Taliban have threatened to kill a Pakistani cricket star turned politician if he holds a planned march to their tribal stronghold along the Afghan border to protest U.S. drone attacks. Although the Pakistani Taliban also oppose the strikes, which have killed many of their fighters, spokesman Ahsanullah Ahsan said they would target Imran Khan because he calls himself a "liberal" -- a term they associate with a lack of religious belief. He also warned they would attack anyone who participates in upcoming elections. "If he comes, our suicide bombers will target him," Ahsan told The Associated Press in an interview Monday in the militant group's stronghold of South Waziristan. "We will kill him." The threat could come as a surprise to many in Pakistan who have criticized Khan for not being tough enough on the Pakistani Taliban and instead focusing most of his criticism on the government's alliance with the U.S. Some of his critics have nicknamed him "Taliban Khan" because o ...
