Eric Bogosian's 100 Monologues
Huffington Post - about 1 year
monologue: from the Greek μονόλογος; μόνος mónos or "alone, solitary" and λόγος lógos, "speech." The first recorded monologues and soliloquys go back at least as far as ancient Roman and Greek times. But unless you are someone with huge amounts of time on your hands and you love to surf the internet to discover acting gems that don't get theatrical releases-or you happen to live in New York and frequent the theater on a regular basis--It's often hard to see some of our most talented actors in this isolated, most intense form. Eric Bogosian's latest labor of love, which goes by the self-explanatory name of 100Monologues.com is here to remedy that, at least partly. In these one hundred sometimes hilarious, sometimes tragic but always revealing monologues written by the three-time Obie award winner and performed by his posse of A-List actors, you get glimpses into his psyche and that of performers that you may never get elsewhere. The themes presented will be familiar to Bogosi ...

The Power of the Headset -- Inside the WGA Awards
Huffington Post - about 3 years
Award Season is in full swing leading up to the 86th annual Academy Awards on March 2nd. Recently, the Writers Guild of America held its own award show honoring outstanding achievement in writing for screen, television and a slew of other media. Bestowed with an All Access badge and a headset, I was able to roam through every nook and cranny of the JW Marriott at L.A. LIVE in downtown Los Angeles at the show. Truth be told, this wasn't part of any scam, nor did I win some contest; and I'm certainly not any sort of VIP that is entitled to such privilege. I'm a journalist who happened to be working the award show -- escorting talent along the red carpet before the show and walking winners to the press room during the program. Assigned to escort presenters, including the always affable Walton Goggins of Justified and TV icon Henry Winkler, known as the nicest man in show business (depending whom you talk to -- some say the same about Tom Hanks), it was fascinating to get such an insi ...

The Embarrassment of Riches: Bulgari at the De Young
Huffington Post - about 3 years
Liz Taylor wearing the Bulgari "green set" In case you were wondering, the technological highlight of the De Young Museum's "Bulgari: La Dolce Vita and Beyond," is a clever interactive portfolio devoted to the Italian house's queen collector, Liz Taylor. Upon turning each page, a digital image of the icon wearing her baubles rises out of the book and floats up the wall before vanishing in a silent poof. The gimmick is an apt expression of the level of gravitas the subject of the exhibit is treated with, and possibly, warrants. Also projected onto the walls on continuous loop are dozens of editorial, advertizing, and paparazzi shots of other bedecked celebrities throughout the decades. Even the first several pages of the show's catalogue read like a laundry list of starlets and socialites who bought and wore Bulgari's designs in its heyday of 1956-1990. The emphasis on starry clientele is indeed distracting -- what should be a part of the Bulgari story, secondary to aspects of th ...

First Nighter: Bruce Norris's Domesticated Yay, Wallace Shawn's Grasses of a Thousand Colors Nay
Huffington Post - over 3 years
We may never know what Hilary Rodham Clinton was thinking during the 1998 Monica Lewinsky episode or how Silda Wall Spitzer was reacting five years ago when Eliot Spitzer strayed or whether Huma Abedin was severely stand-by-your-man-tested a year or so ago over Anthony Weiner's vigorous sexting. We might never know any of this, but Bruce Clybourne Park Norris has some ideas. He couches them in the wily and often funny Domesticated, at Lincoln Center's Mitzi E. Newhouse, where Judy Pulver (Laurie Metcalf) doesn't fight especially hard to contain her anger when it's revealed that high-ranking public office holder Bill Pulver (Jeff Goldblum) has not only visited a young hooker but that in a tussle he'd caused an accident that has the young woman hospitalized and in a coma. Appealing to the inquiring-minds-want-to-know longings of the public, Norris follows the increasingly estranged Pulvers and their daughters, outspoken Casey (Emily Meade) and asthmatic adopted-from-Cambodia Ca ...

'Grasses Of A Thousand Colors': Wallace Shawn's Shaggy Cat Story
Huffington Post - over 3 years
Wallace Shawn's play Grasses of a Thousand Colors, which opened last night at the Public Theater, is basically a very long shaggy cat story - absurdist, intriguing, and sometimes humorous - but if it has any point at all it would seem to be that scientists shouldn't muck about with the food chain. The conceit of Grasses is that the audience is attending a reading that a doctor named Ben is giving of his voluminous memoirs, and it is only after it gets under way that one gradually comes to the realization that despite his genial manner he's mad as a hatter and a sexaholic. The saga opens with Shawn strolling onstage wearing a black brocade dressing gown, black pajamas with a black polka dot ascot knotted at his neck, and black velvet slippers on his feet. He ambles over to a lectern upon which rests a glass of water and a small vial of some liquid - a drug of indefinite origin but given what follows could be LSD, which he imbibes - along with a huge book that would make the O.E.D. ...

Regina Weinreich: Hamptons Journal: Hall & Oates Rock Rydell High Evoking Nostalgia for the Mid-Century
Huffington Post - over 3 years
Among the many pleasures of the Grease-themed benefit for the Prostate Cancer Foundation this weekend in Wainscott, was seeing Michael Milken in a letter sweater like the reformed Danny Zuko at the end of that 1978 movie set in 1959. At East Hampton Studio, a vintage Chevy parked outside, women channeled either Sandy in bobby socks and saddle shoes or edgy Rizzo in tight black capris and off the shoulder tops with red neckerchiefs. Like many a felt flare skirt, Colin Cowie's table treatments featured cut out poodles. Formica and steel chairs and gym bleachers went far to keep the 'fifties fantasy going. Only the white bling of an Elvis impersonator seemed to come out of another era. Many talents went into the production of this special night including those of guest chef David Burke who created a cafeteria style buffet dinner for the occasion: chicken, mashed potatoes, coleslaw, onion rings, chocolate pudding--comfort food. But the entertainment, the band Hall & Oates, per ...

Life is Too Short for Cloud Atlas’s Self-Indulgence
The New Republic - over 4 years
There will be times during the film of Cloud Atlas—somewhere in the dense second hour—when you will recall that the dog needs to be walked and that you may have left the coffee on, and, whatever your age, even if life is an ocean made up of many drops, you may resolve that life is too short for this errant nonsense. I stuck it out, TNR, only for you, and because I wanted to delay as long as possible the desperate plight of actually writing about the film. In the third hour, I have to admit, the disparate parts of this self-indulgent venture do make gestures of coming together. Still, I suspect many will agree that the only emotional payoff comes in the credits. That’s when you realize that a strange cast of players take six or seven roles each over the centuries (and this film stretches from the 1840s to the twenty-second century, unless I missed something). One pastime to take you through the ordeal is to count the appearances—all routine and sub-par—of such actors as Tom Hanks, Hal ...

'30 Beats': No fire in this heat wave
San Francisco Chronicle - over 4 years
'30 Beats': No fire in this heat wave "30 Beats" is a carefully structured trot through the sex lives of varied New Yorkers in a blistering summer heat wave. The feature debut of writer-director Alexis Lloyd, "30 Beats" opens on Julie (Condola Rashad), a smirking young virgin determined to lose it with her experienced man-friend Adam (Justin Kirk). Somehow it makes him impotent, which requires a visit to a psychic (Jennifer Tilly), who then seduces him and moves on to a bike messenger (Jason Day), who moves on to a heart patient in a green dress (Paz de la Huerta), who then ... There's also banal and blathering conversations that noodle around kabbalah, systemic equations, Shakespeare, "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance," bisexuality and boundaries, limitations and scars.

John Carroll: From 'Non-Speaking Townsperson Second From Left' To A Star Of Broadway Bares: It Does Get Better!
Huffington Post - over 4 years
Every year in June the Broadway community gets a little leaner, a little hungrier (and therefore a lot crabbier), and somewhere on the pigment scale between "sun-kissed" and "Oompa Loompa." No, they are not casting for the new musical, Charlie and the Vegan Carob Factory; it's simply time for Broadway Bares. Before I go any further and describe the artistic skin-fest that is the show, let me start off by telling you why the Broadway community feels so strongly about this event. Twenty-two years ago, choreographer Jerry Mitchell started doing this benefit in conjunction with Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS (BC/EFA) to help raise money and awareness to fight HIV/AIDS. When you look back at the early '90s, you can see literally a generation of artists in the Broadway community wiped out. Many performers, designers, directors, choreographers, dressers, producers, crewmembers, ushers, and agents -- the magic makers in my field -- were gone. In a time when so many in the co ...

Secret Sex – A Book Alive Online: Chapter 34 – Vows
eNews Channels - over 4 years
eNewsChannels BOOK SERIAL: “Secret Sex, A Book Alive Online,” written and lived by John Scott G. Chapter 34 – “Vows.” Warning, severe plot twist coming. Here we go: I got married. “WTF?” I hear you saying. Yup, it was a shock to many people. This is probably where we should cue up some eerie and ominous sound effects. Asking my friends to suggest the most disturbing music they’ve ever heard resulted in a number of interesting replies, including “Psycho” by Bernard Herrmann. Also: “Macarena” by Los Del Rio. “The Isle of the Dead” by Sergei Rachmaninoff. “Yummy Yummy Yummy” by Ohio Express Overture to “The Flying Dutchman” by Richard Wagner. Anything by Raffi, Kenny G, or Mannheim Steamroller. “Toccata and Fugue in D minor” by J.S. Bach. Anything by Pat Boone, Michael Bolton, or the Black Eyed Peas. My personal pick might be Olivier Messiaen’s “Quartet for the End of Time,” not only because it was written while the composer was in a concentration camp but also beca ...

Don’t Dress for Dinner Review
The Faster Times - almost 5 years
Timing is everything in farce, but it isn’t the fault of the people behind “Don’t Dress For Dinner,” that it has the bad timing to be arriving at the very end of the Broadway season shortly after “One Man, Two Guvnors,” the far less elegant farce that is actually funny. Nor can they be blamed for being unable to cast Mark Rylance again in another farce by Marc Camoletti, the French playwright who also wrote “Boeing Boeing,” as well as some 40 other plays that one might hope the Roundabout Theater Company will not consider reviving. Bernard, a character from “Boeing Boeing,” has gotten married to Jacqueline, but he is no less a philanderer as he was, committing adultery on occasion with a sluttish model named Suzanne. On this particular weekend, Bernard has planned a tryst with Suzanne in his country home to celebrate her birthday, while his wife Jacqueline is off visiting her mother. But there is a complication. It turns out that Bernard’s friend Robert (another character from “ ...

Anthrax Star Opens Up About Autistic Kids
Green Celebrity Network - almost 5 years
Written by Delinda Lombardo Former Anthrax star Dan Spitz has opened up about his struggles as a father of two autistic children in efforts to help raise awareness about the disorder. The rocker and his wife Candi are parents to two identical twins boys, both of whom have been diagnosed with autism. They decided to open up about the issues with child-rearing in a bid to promote early intervention and to mark America’s Autism Awareness Month. “Everything was normal until around 15 months (and) we started noticing a bit of a delay,” Candi said. “They had a reaction to shots at 12 months, which the vaccine subject is very controversial. At this point in time, we don’t believe it was the vaccines that caused it, but we noticed a reaction and a delay in development right afterwards…They were still walking, talking, playing until around 17-and-a-half to 18-months and (then) they lost everything. In a two-week window, they stopped eating… then they stopped playing. Then they stopped mak ...
