Jesse Dylan: Dylan On Deitch: Reinventing The Experience Of Art
Huffington Post - over 3 years
I knew of Jeffrey Deitch from his time in New York and became especially intrigued by his work when he began as Director of Los Angeles's Museum of Contemporary Art. I was struck by how willing he was to embrace the new. He was the rare person who had created his own world of ideas. He wanted to counter our expectations of art with the unexpected. He wanted us to see street art, to show us young artists in Los Angeles. It is not unusual for someone at the forefront of change to be misunderstood. Though Jeffrey Deitch is no longer Director at MOCA, let's take a moment to appreciate the fact that he brought an original voice to the art scene in Los Angeles. Whether or not you're a fan of his style, we can all agree that he was responsible for a set of provocative, interesting and unexpected exhibitions that enriched our experience of art. Moving forward, I hope that cities around the world will embrace an alternative vision of art -- pushing boundaries and expanding our u ...

Fred Goldring: 'Forward': A New Song and Video in Support of President Obama's Re-Election
Huffington Post - over 4 years
In 2004 when I was Chairman of Rock the Vote, I had the chance opportunity to meet and spend some quality time with then-Illinois State Senator Barack Obama, the day before he gave his now famous speech at the DNC in Boston. That meeting inspired me to do something I had never done before -- seriously support an individual political candidate. When Barack decided to run for the presidency in 2007, I had the crazy idea that maybe the right song could get his message across and actually influence people to get involved. I observed that for some strange reason, music had never been effectively used as an emotional driver to engage and inspire people in politics. Sure, there were artists regularly performing at rallies and fundraisers, but were minds really being changed? Most of the people going to these events were either big music fans there for just the music, or they were already committed and didn't need to be persuaded. Yes, Bill Clinton had adopted the Fleetwood Mac ...

WATCH: Pearl Jam Guitarist Stumps For ObamaCare
Huffington Post - over 4 years
Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready has released a new video urging that people only vote for congressional candidates that support the Affordable Care Act, colloquially known as ObamaCare. "Life is a pre-existing condition," McCready says at the beginning of the video. The guitarist was diagnosed with Crohn's disease when he was 21 years old, and has long been an advocate for the condition. (As noted by the Seattle Times, "Crohn's disease is characterized by the inflammation of the intestinal wall, while ulcerative colitis causes ulceration and inflammation in the colon and rectum.") The video -- which was directed by Jesse Dylan, the man behind the 2008 video "Yes We Can" -- stresses the difficulty McCready has had getting health care in his life because of Crohn's disease. "I was denied twice, even being a member of a famous rock band," McCready said in a statement accompanying the video. "The people who don't have those kind of resources, they are stuck, they have ...

Claire Diaz-Ortiz: The Women Who Change Honduras
Huffington Post - over 4 years
Every day, I immerse myself in stories. And not just any stories. In my day job at Twitter, Inc., and in my work as an author (Twitter for Good: Change the World One Tweet at a Time) and speaker, I have the good fortune to sink into the best of stories. Stories of individuals taking the power of technology into their own hands to make the world a better place. Stories of folks using digital media to make real impact in the communities and lives they touch. Stories of how social media is changing the world. These are the stories that make me sing, and these are the stories I seek out daily. And so, when ONE, the grassroots advocacy campaign co-founded by Bono, invited me to Honduras to explore the groundbreaking work of ONE's partners with women and girls in the region, I immediately accepted. Joining other delegates America Ferrera and Alexis Bledel on ONE's first trip to Latin America -- and their first outside Africa -- I went to learn about how a country ...
