A Merry Chrismukkah to All: Embracing Interfaith Families
Huffington Post - about 1 year
My great-grandparents were Jewish, my grandparents were/are Jewish, my parents are Jewish, and I am proudly Jewish. I had my Bat Mitzvah, I went to graduate school to work in the Jewish community and I now work for Hillel, the center for Jewish life on college campuses. I've even had heated debates over which Fiddler on the Roof leading man would make a better mate, Motel or Perchik (my vote always lies with the latter), and yet I have a hidden secret--I grew up celebrating Christmas. And not just in the listening to Christmas music and watching Elf way (both of which I still do, without shame). Instead, every Christmas morning, my sisters and I piled in the minivan in our pajamas and my parents drove us to my grandparents' house. Inside we indulged in gingerbread, candy canes and many other Christmas delicacies. We had stockings with our names on them hanging from the fireplace and we even opened presents from Santa. As a young Jewish girl I remember questioning why it was that I k ...

Is the Song 'Royals' by Lorde Racist?
Huffington Post - over 3 years
This question originally appeared on Quora in regards to this article. Answer by Aaron Ellis, Former Music Critic with Artist Farm This song is not about a race. It's about a culture. Not African American or rap culture, but the materialism and excess that is overtaking pop culture. If I wanted to, I could interpret this song as an attack on 2 Chainz, Kanye West, Wiz Khalifa, and Lil Wayne. However, based on their recent music, videos, and behavior, I could make an equally strong argument that this song is directed at Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber. Heck, Miley has a song on the radio right now that talks about, as Lorde puts it, "trippin in the bathroom" (referring to the line in "We Can't Stop" about "everyone body in line at the bathroom, trying to get a line in the bathroom," or something to that effect). Miley and Justin. White. Lorde's song mentions people bragging about "Jet Planes." While one could associate that with Far East Movement's rap song "Like a G6", it could ...

'Chernobyl Diaries': Horror movie and travel book depict extreme tourism
LATimes - over 4 years
Twenty-six years after the worst nuclear accident in history, Chernobyl is suddenly hot again — at least culturally. This weekend, "Chernobyl Diaries," a horror movie that follows a group of tourists on an excursion to the abandoned Ukrainian site of the meltdown, hits theaters just as a pollution travelogue by journalist Andrew Blackwell, "Visit Sunny Chernobyl," is arriving in bookstores. The movie, co-written and produced by "Paranormal Activity" creator Oren Peli and directed by visual-effects supervisor and first-time feature filmmaker Brad Parker, was inspired by the very type of extreme tourism Blackwell undertakes in his nonfiction book: visits to ravaged, sometimes unexpectedly beautiful polluted sites around the world. Blackwell canoed through Chernobyl while researching his book and also jogged in smoggy Linfen, China, and sailed for the swirling Pacific Ocean garbage patch, all in pursuit of a glimpse of the Earth's contaminated future. The travelers in "Chernoby ...
