Stranger Takes Out Cash So Homeless Woman Can Buy Ticket To See Family
Huffington Post - 5 months
A humble man is being praised for his spontaneous gesture to help uplift a homeless woman going through a difficult time. In a viral video of the encounter, the man, who’s been identified as Daniel Roose, can be seen withdrawing money from an ATM in Perth, Australia, and handing it to the woman, whose name is Jess. Roose gave her the money so she could buy a plane ticket to see her family in New Zealand, according to Siham Carollisen, the person who filmed the video.  Carollisen is one of the people behind Brothers and Sisters Perth, a group that helps local homeless people. The group recently shared her footage of the good deed on Facebook. “We need more people like you in this world, mate,” Carollisen tells Roose in the video.  “I’m just a simple person,” Roose says as he walks away.  “All I had to do is walk to a teller machine and back. ... Everyone can dig deep, or do something small, to help someone out,” Roose told local outlet WAtoday of his act of ...

How Lonelygirl15 taught us to doubt everything on the internet
Yahoo News - 8 months
In the summer of 2006, YouTube was only a year old, and people were very concerned for the safety of its breakout star. Only they didn't actually know who or where she was — or whether she was even real. Bree, the unassuming 16-year-old vlogger best known by her username, Lonelygirl15, was possibly a victim and possibly a hoax, but it didn't matter either way to the thousands of fans who anxiously waited for her updates.  Not knowing was the real thrill. And 10 years later, Lonelygirl15's legacy is the currency of uncertainty. SEE ALSO: 'Bachelorette' villain Chad may be squatting on domains for porn Bree's first vlog appeared on the site on June 16, 2006 and was titled "First Blog/Dorkiness Prevails." In it, she offers shoutouts to her YouTube heroes, laments her boring life and positions herself as an outsider desperate to fit in. "Well, I guess a video blog is about me. My name is Bree. I'm 16. Ummmm... I don't really want to tell you where I live, because you could like, stalk me," ...

Are Women Better Off Running Their Own Business?
Huffington Post - over 3 years
(Photo: Jessica Rose, Founder of London Jewellery School collecting the HP Smart Business Award for Skills Creation sponsered by Enterprise Nation presented by Emma Jones) It's no secret that women face inequalities in the work place. The combination of fewer opportunities, a history of sexism in regard to employing women in senior positions and reliance on women to provide free child-care means statistically there is far less chance that women will end up in executive positions in the corporate field (16.6% Fortune 500 Board Seats Held by Women in 2012 - according to Catalyst) Yet in contrast, if writing from my experience setting up a business four years ago, with no background in business or previous experience, I now run a thriving company. This includes managing a significant staff team, venue and sizable annual budget. Had I gone the traditional route I am doubtful I would be a company Director at 26. Which begs the question, are women better off striking out on their own an ...

Vanessa Pinto: There Is Nothing Quite Like a Georgia Peach
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
It sometimes feels like there are few simple pleasures left in life -- from taking a nap in the middle of a day, to picking flowers, to tending a garden or a quiet hour away from the noise and social media posting populous. Often, with our day to day, we forget about the little things, which make up our fond memories. I recently found myself in Nashville and a company I had been hearing about caught my attention locally. Allow me to introduce you to, "The Peach Truck." They are making simple pleasures accessible to everyone with their delicious Georgia peaches. Remember That Baby Goat-Saving Pig? It Was A Hoax
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
After wowing the Internet, a video featuring a pig saving a drowning baby goat has been revealed as a fake. As a New York Times report revealed on Tuesday, the 30-second clip, which went viral after it was posted on YouTube last September, was artfully staged by the people behind Comedy Central series "Nathan for You." Broadcast last year on Fox News, NBC's "Nightly News" and ABC's "Good Morning America," as well as posted on sites like Gawker and The Huffington Post, the video -- which has since been seen more than 7 million times -- was, in reality, the result of work by animal trainers and several crew members. Kelly McBride, a senior faculty member at non-profit journalism school Poynter Institute, told The Huffington Post over the phone on Tuesday that it was disturbing to her that so many media outlets had been duped by the fake clip. (McBride first spoke with the Times regarding the hoax unveiling.) "When I see several news organizations making the same mi ...

Officials at Yosemite National Park say a 23-year-old woman who was reported missing when she failed to show up for her first day of work at a park hotel over the weekend has been found. A park spokesman says search crews located Jessica Rose Garcia around 1 p.m. Tuesday as she was hiking off-trail in a rugged area in the southern portion of the park. Spokesman Scott Gediman says Garcia appeared to be OK, but was being taken to a local hospital for a medical evaluation. After being checked at the hospital, Gediman says Garcia would be interviewed by park rangers to determine why she failed to report to work.
