On Me
Huffington Post - 5 months
I politely weave through the throng of emotional moms dropping off their kids for the first time as I desperately try to catch up with my youngest son, who is happily walking hand-in-hand with his friend down the hall to their classroom. "Goodbye cutie. Have a wonderful day," I exclaim as he's already settled into a miniature chair at the table, captivated by a colorful puzzle. I turn to his teacher and say, "Ok... so... what should I do?" As it was Day 3 of his nursery school career, I wasn't quite sure what the protocol was. "We've got your cell," she replied, which I think was her attempt to comfort me but actually her way of saying, "Lady, please leave. He's fine." So, I left. I slowly walked to my car, opened the door, sat down and paused. For the first time in more than four years, I was by myself. Not because I was at work and my nanny and son were at the playground. Not because I had a doctor's appointment and my Mom came to watch the kids so I could get in ...

Hallelujah, We'll Be Spared A GoDaddy Commercial At Super Bowl 50
Huffington Post - about 1 year
Remember GoDaddy's Super Bowl commercial last year? The one that showed us a puppy bouncing out of a truck bed and embarking on an Odyssean journey home, only to be scooped up and unceremoniously shipped off by a likely unethical dog breeder who'd just sold him online? Maybe you recall the Internet domain retailer's 2013 Super Bowl ad? The one featuring a slurpy makeout sesh between model Bar Refaeli and professional nerd archetype Jesse Heiman to promote its Neanderthalian "Smart Meets Sexy" campaign? (Yes, true to every harmful stereotype about women, Refaeli played the "sexy" half.) Or what about GoDaddy's completely nonsensical 2012 Super Bowl spot, in which NASCAR driver Danica Patrick and fitness guru Jillian Michaels paint "GoDaddy" and ".co" a couple times on a model's bare skin until they realize (silly women!) they hadn't covered her breasts? Or the company's half-assed 2011 ad showing Patrick and Michaels fighting the men forcing them, via legalese, to do a GoDadd ...

Here's the One Mascara Hack Makeup Artists Think You Should Know
Huffington Post - about 1 year
By Dana Burke, Allure Photo: Robert Mitra/WWD If only applying mascara was as simple as swipe, swipe, swipe. Truth be told, there's an art to coating your lashes just right. (FYI: There's actually a perfect number of strokes that yields a perfect no-clump effect. Who knew?) While we apply it daily--and think we're experts in the stuff--there's a lot to learn about using a tube to its full capability. Here, 11 beauty experts share their best tips and tricks to step up your mascara game. Plump your lashes. "Apply mascara, then pat pressed powder onto your lashes and add another coat of mascara. The powder acts as a thickener and keeps mascara in place." --Ramy Gafni, a makeup artist who has worked with Taylor Swift, Rihanna, and Britney Spears Avoid clumps. "Apply mascara with a flat-edged synthetic brush. Paint the mascara onto your bottom lashes for soft, luscious lashes without any clumping or smudging." --Viviana Martin, the director of global artistry and pro artist rel ...

Time to Detox and Shave My Legs
Huffington Post - over 1 year
Yeowch! That can't be right. Can it? 20 pounds! 20! The scale must be wrong. It has to be wrong. I haven't been eating that much, have I? Sure, when I switched over from summer dresses to jeans they felt a little snug, but 20 pounds? Whoa. Funny how I didn't really notice. I was happily plodding along drinking my wine, noshing on my Dunkin Donuts bacon, egg and cheese croissant sandwiches. Mindlessly devouring a bag of Inner Peas, convincing myself that they were healthy because they were purchased at Trader Joe's. In moderation, perhaps, but not the entire bag in one sitting. Now that I've seen the number, it's all I can think about. I've gone into full-blown panic mode, frantically searching on Pinterest for ways to detox my body and the motivation to get moving. So far I haven't been able to find a pin that shows me how to poke a hole in my bloated belly and drain some of this excess fluid. Jillian Michaels detox tea looks pretty good. Dandelion Root Tea, wh ...

Did 'The Biggest Loser' Winner Go Too Far?
Huffington Post - about 3 years
By Tara Weng for KnowMore.tv Credit: 'The Biggest Loser' via YouTube.com With more than a third of the country struggling with obesity, it's no wonder that shows like "The Biggest Loser" have become a cultural phenomenon. Many eyes were wide open on Tuesday night as the television program crowned its latest winner, Rachel Frederickson, and those on social media went wild -- not just with congratulations. The winner dropped an entire person, losing 155 pounds. That may have been done before on the show. What caused a stir is the fact that Frederickson finished the show at a slight 105 pounds. She literally lost 60% of her body weight. Some viewers, and even some not watching, commented that Frederickson appeared "too thin" and unhealthy-looking. Though the show celebrates the dwindling numbers on the scale, did this contestant take the message a bit too far? According to the World Health Organization's Body Mass Index (BMI) guidelines Fredrickson's 18% BMI is below what's cons ...

US Magazine - about 3 years
Jillian Michaels is famous for her super-fit physique -- but even she's not immune to the occasional body insecurity. Chatting with Wendy Williams on the Tuesday, Jan. 21, episode of The Wendy Williams Show, the Biggest Loser trainer admitted she's not entirely happy with her butt. PHOTOS: Biggest Loser body makeovers "I've never fully loved my booty," she confessed when asked which part of her figure she'd like to change. "It fits in the clothes nicely. In clothes, I can stuff that sucker into a pair of jeans and you would never know. But out of the jeans it just kinda...falls. And the texture makes me unhappy." "Is it dimply?" Williams interrupted. PHOTOS: Hot over-40 celebs in swimsuits "Yes, it is!" Michaels -- who turns 40 on Feb. 18 -- replied. "I appreciate that it's like -- there's good enough, and there's acceptance and everything -- but for 40, I really want to give myself the best butt I can possibly have." 'Biggest Loser's' Jillian Michaels ramps up fitness routine
Yahoo News - about 3 years
By Dorene Internicola NEW YORK (Reuters) - As Jillian Michaels, the tough-love trainer on NBC's hit reality show "The Biggest Loser," lunges towards her middle years she infuses her fitness routine with the same take-no-prisoners mindset that impels her TV contestants to shape up. "I‘m trying to get into the best shape of my life for 40," Michaels said in an interview in New York while demonstrating a workout designed for Curves, the global chain of women's fitness centers. "I don't lock into one type of exercise," said Michaels, adding the workouts she creates focus on flexibility, balance, core stabilization, power, speed and agility. Dr. Michele Olson, of the American College of Sports Medicine, agrees with the 10 percent rule as a general means of adjusting exercise intensity or length in order to gain improvements at a reasonable rate.
