Remembering The Storm Chasers
Huffington Post - over 3 years
Three veteran storm chasers died doing what they loved: roaming the Great Plains in search of dangerous storms like the one in Oklahoma that ended their final pursuit. Tim Samaras, his son Paul and colleague Carl Young, who through the years had shared dramatic videos with television viewers and weather researchers, died Friday night when an EF3 tornado with winds up to 165 mph turned on them near El Reno, Okla. They were among 13 people who died in the storm in Oklahoma City and its suburbs. Their deaths in pursuit of the storm are believed to be the first among scientific researchers while chasing tornadoes, the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla., said. "They put themselves in harm's way so that they can educate the public about the destructive power of these storms," said Chris West, the undersheriff in Canadian County, where the men died. Tim Samaras, 54, and Paul Samaras, 24, both of Bennett, Colo., wer ...

Nicole Bryl: Maria Menounos: Extra's Fearless Hurricane Sandy Relief Hero
Huffington Post - over 4 years
MARIA MENOUNOS -- EXTRA's fearless Hurricane Sandy reporter, on site at the 90-story high crane collapse on West 57th Street in midtown Manhattan. View of the fallen crane collapse from a neighboring apartment building. Hello Huffington Post make-up readers! Thirteen years ago I received a call from my dear friend Bill Cabral, (now talent booker for Live! With Kelly & Michael) asking if I could do him a favor and run over to the Hilton Hotel on 6th Avenue in NYC to do makeup for a very special "on the rise" news girl named Maria Menounos. He said, "I'll owe you one Nicole, just please be there at 5 a.m." "Who? Maria who? Never heard of her. Grrrrr 5 a.m.? That means I have to wake up at 4 a.m. and for who? Ahhhhh. OK, but you definitely WILL owe me for this," I replied begrudgingly. As agreed, the next morning at the ungodly hour of 5 a.m., I knocked on the "news girls'" door. At first sight, I immediately perked up when this stunningly gorgeous, hot as heck, b ...

Jim Cantore Tebows during Hurricane Isaac
Awful Announcing - over 4 years
I don't know why or when "reporter getting pummeled in the middle of a hurricane" became a thing, but Jim Cantore is the Joe Montana of the craft.  As he stands in the streets of New Orleans with Hurricane Isaac coming through, Cantore takes a moment to drop to one knee and say, "for whatever it's worth, I hope I'm making Tebow proud."  Yes Jim, yes you are. For whatever it's worth, Cantore has scored as many preseason touchdowns as Tim Tebow, Mark Sanchez, and the entire Jets offense in 2012. H/T @bjack615

NBC Apologizes For Latest Olympics Gaffe
Huffington Post - over 4 years
NBC says no offense was intended by a poorly timed promotional ad featuring a monkey on gymnastics rings that aired on the network directly following a commentary by Bob Costas on Gabby Douglas' gold medal inspiring other African-American girls to take up the sport. The gymnastics-themed ad for the upcoming NBC comedy "Animal Practice" was specifically timed to run late Thursday night following the women's gold medal competition. NBC said it was scheduled to run before the network knew about Costas' commentary. "Much of America has fallen in love with Gabby Douglas," Costas said. "Also safe to say that there are some young African-American girls out there who tonight are saying to themselves, 'Hey, I'd like to try that, too.'" Then NBC switched to the commercial with the small, widely grinning monkey on the rings. Blacks in the past have been disparagingly referred to as monkeys to the point where it is considered a common slur. ...
