Rich will tower over poor in London's Docklands
Guardian (UK) - over 3 years
Campaigners and local MPs react with dismay to news of luxury development in area with 23,000 people on housing waiting lists It will be bigger than Canary Wharf, worth more than £1bn and create more than 700 luxury apartments to appeal to the world's super-rich. Hertsmere Tower is the latest grand residential project planned for the capital that will target the overseas buyers who are currently picking up four out of every five prime London properties. Days after the estate agency firm Savills warned that developers in London were focusing on high-end properties when the biggest need was for affordable homes, it has emerged that an Irish developer is planning to build a 74-storey, 714-apartment skyscraper alongside the Canary Wharf tower in London's Docklands. Tom Ryan has paid £100m for the site and aims to spend eight times that sum on a tower that will be just seven metres higher than its near neighbour. Will Artists Create For Obama This Year?
Huffington Post - over 4 years
Although posters and creative strategies have long been part of elections, the 2008 presidential campaign was notable for the artistic boost that Barack Obama received. Who can forget the famous "Hope" poster by graphic designer and street artist Shepard Fairey, which became the primary image of Obama's bid for office? Whether the president's reelection bid will be backed with the same artistic enthusiasm remains an open question. Art critic Peter Schjeldahl of The New Yorker called the "Hope" poster "the most efficacious American political illustration since 'Uncle Sam Wants You,'" while Laura Barton of The Guardian declared that "it has acquired the kind of instant recognition of Jim Fitzpatrick's Che Guevara poster, and is surely set to grace T-shirts, coffee mugs and the walls of student bedrooms in the years to come." Fairey wasn't the only artist to stand up in support of then-candidate Obama. Ten artists in total donated their works to the 2008 "Artists for Ob ...

Bowman: College is worth the cost
WJBC - almost 5 years
ISU President Dr. Al Bowman thinks the college is worth the cost. (WJBC file photo) BLOOMINGTON — Illinois State University President Al Bowman says people should not question the importance of a college degree because of the costs. But with the possibility of student loan interest rates doubling, the issue has turned political. If a decision by Congress is not made by July 1, the interest rates of Subsidized Stafford Loans will raise from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent. Democrats and Republicans in the House and Senate have each proposed their own plan to stop the hike. Bowman said he would like to get the politics out of the issue because a college degree is very important. “When you talk about a shortage of college trained workers, people look at you like, ‘What are you talking about, unemployment rates are high,’ but the current economic slowdown and the sluggish recovery has masked the fact that we are on the verge on a large number of retirements among baby boomers,” Bowm ...
