(VIDEO) IAB Chair Jim Norton Wants To Clean Up Fakes And Frauds
Huffington Post - 19 days
HOLLYWOOD, Florida -- The ad-tech sector must do more to clamp down on a wave of "fake news" and ad fraud that is threatening both publishers and advertisers. That is according to the new chair of the US branch of the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB). Jim Norton was elected to the post this week in the organization that represents the online advertising industry. "This authenticated supply chain has been a real challenge in our industry, causing a proliferation of fake news and fraud," Norton tells Beet.TV in this video interview. "A lot of bad actors out there are profiteering from proliferation of fake news unreliable content, using social media platforms and new ad technology. How do we weed out the bad actors? We can do a much better job." The IAB post is Norton's second new industry role in just a few months. In October, Condé Nast hired him from AOL to oversee revenue operations. His plan, revealed in January, sees cost savings, titles being grouped in to "br ...

Aisle View: Pot of Gold at Rainbow's End
Huffington Post - 3 months
Ken Jennings and Melissa Errico in Finian's Rainbow Photo: Carol Rosegg Finian's Rainbow, that delectable "musical satire"--to borrow the authors' preferred description--is back in town, down at the pint-size Irish Repertory Theatre. Full-scale musicals often wilt when presented with severely whittled casts, and bountifully luscious scores (like the one written by composer Burton Lane and lyricist E.Y. Harburg) can sound mighty measly in the hands of "a teeny tiny band" (to borrow a phrase from the author of Falsettos). But the inherent glint-in-the-eye charm of Finian is simply but solidly captured by the folks, onstage and offstage, at the Irish Rep. The results are, indeed, "something sort of grandish." Finian is the story of a crotchety, stereotype Irishman (Ken Jennings) who steals a crock of gold from a leprechaun and brings it--along with his glow-o'-the-mist daughter, Sharon (Melissa Errico)--to America to bury it in the ground near Fort Knox, where the U.S. Go ...

Not Mad About "The Boy" But Pleasantly Surprised
Huffington Post - about 1 year
Movie Review - Jackie K Cooper "The Boy" (STX Entertainment) Watching the trailer for the new horror film "The Boy" I was not impressed. It seemed so dumb to have a woman travel to England to babysit a young child, and then discover he/it was a doll. Hadn't we seen all of this demon doll stuff before when the "Chucky" movies were all the rage! So why was Hollywood beating this dead horse one more time. Well that will teach me to pre-judge anything out of Hollywood. It seems "The Boy" has a lot more going for it than first appears. It has a group of good, if not great, actors; an interesting, if not totally logical, script; and enough twists and turns to keep audiences entertained for the most part. The story concerns a young American woman named Greta (Lauren Cohan) who takes a job in England to be the nanny to a boy named Brahms. When she arrives she realizes the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Heelshire (Jim Norton and Diana Hardcastle), are a bit old to have an eight year old son. T ...

Amy Schumer Denies Stealing Material From Three Comedians
Huffington Post - about 1 year
Amy Schumer has been accused of lifting material from three comedians after a tweet on Monday night set off a string of allegations against the star, according to The Interrobang. In a series of tweets, Wendy Liebman, Tammy Pescatelli and Kathleen Madigan all commiserated about Schumer allegedly lifting material from each of them.  "Between Amy Schumer doing 1 of my best jokes on her HBO special and this meme of my joke, I’m done with social media," Liebman wrote in a tweet that has since been deleted (the jokes in question can be seen here).  Comedian and "Arrested Development" writer Chuck Martin got in on the action and directed Liebman to speak with fellow comedian Kathleen Madigan.  So maddening. You and @kathleenmadigan should talk. https://t.co/I93bbZdx5l — Chuck Martin (@MrChuckMartin) January 18, 2016 Tammy Pescatelli also answered Liebman's tweet about Schumer. Though her reply has since been deleted, Refinery29 was able to snap screenshots b ...

Jay Leno Sued For Bestiality Jokes Regarding Flight Attendant Accused Of Hiding Rats In Underwear
Huffington Post - over 3 years
A flight attendant who says she was falsely accused of using her underwear and pantyhose to carry pet rats aboard airplanes has filed suit against Jay Leno over jokes made about her on "The Tonight Show." The former Americal Airlines flight attendant, 55-year-old Louann Giambattista, accuses Leno and three other comedians of having made "sickening, outrageous and disgusting attacks" in a July 2013 segment titled "Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda.” A copy of the suit, obtained by Courthouse News, takes specific issue with humorous statements made on Leno's show that accuse her of "engaging in bestiality and sexual misconduct with a rat." The jokes, made by three comedians who appeared as guests on the show, are as follows: "If I were one of those rats, I would be really upset. I prefer not to sit in cooch." -Alec Mapa "A filthy rodent like a rat does not belong on an airplane. She could have used what the rest of us ladies use -- a rabbit." -Kira Soltanovich, referring to a popular br ...

Humble Bundle Unveils Pay-What-You-Will Comedy Package With Louis C.K., Tig Notaro & More
Huffington Post - over 3 years
Since Louis C.K. changed the way comedy specials are sold with his landmark "Live at the Beacon Theatre," which he sold directly to fans through his site, many observers have questioned how that model will evolve. After all, not everyone has the fame and adoration of Louie, and both artists and consumers may need additional reason to support this new way of doing business. Enter Humble Bundle. Since its founding in 2010, Humble Bundle has delivered packages of video games and other media to consumers for any price they choose (a la the release of Radiohead's "In Rainbows"). If users choose to pay more than the average price, they receive additional, premium selections of media. Last month, they made their new focus stand-up comedy, focusing on titles distributed through non-traditional methods. Right, now Humble Bundle is selling specials from Tig Notaro, Maria Bamford, Hannibal Buress, Jim Norton in one bundle. Customers who pay more than the current average price, which is current ...

Sadaf Fahim: The Youtube Sensation Who Stole From Patrice O'Neal
Huffington Post - over 3 years
There have been a few joke-stealing scandals in recent years: Carlos Mencia stealing from Joe Rogan, Jay Mohr from Rick Shapiro, the lesser-known (though no less egregious) instance of Denis Leary stealing from Louis C.K. And now, Kain Carter stealing from Patrice O'Neal, less than two years after Patrice's untimely death at age 41. Patrice's own comment on the Opie & Anthony radio show makes the first salient point: Could you please stop saying 'jokes'? Back in the day when people stole jokes, it was: 'two Jews walk into a bar...' Carlos [Mencia] is taking your life's analogies, man. In the context of modern standup, a good comic's material comes out of their life experience and represents their analysis of the world. Stealing it means stealing their thoughts, their voice. What theft is more serious than that? It also takes many years to find the right expression for those thoughts and someone who steals is skipping all that hard work, the years of trying an ...

Fariha Roisin: What We Talk About When We Talk About Rape (and Lindy West)
Huffington Post - over 3 years
Hi, I'd like to share a story. Once in New York I watched a comedy show where the last and headlining comedian made a barrage of rape jokes to much of the male audience's approval. Afterwards two of my (female) friends and one of their boyfriends talked about the set. One friend loved it, the other not so much. One friend thought it was hilarious and perfectly okay to laugh about rape because, well, comedy has no boundaries! Nothing is sacred! We should laugh at everything, otherwise the terrorists have won! (If I remember correctly, this is verbatim.) After that friend and her boyfriend went to sleep, my other friend turned to me and detailed how uncomfortable she felt about the set and that in truth she had experienced a pretty brutal experience with a few guys a couple years earlier where she had been drugged and then gang raped at a party. She was still unsure about the details and hesitant about how to a) handle the trauma b) reconcile the fact that people she knew had do ...

W. Kamau Bell: 5 Things to Remember While Watching Comic vs. Feminist on Totally Biased
The Huffington Post - over 3 years
1. The title is a joke. And lest we forget, Totally Biased is a comedy show (or is at least attempting to be). Of course there are funny feminists and feminist stand-up comics. But in my experience the whole rape-joke argument --- for lack of a better term --- tends to break down between male comics and female feminists. So for the purposes of our show I wanted to recreate what I have seen but in a much more controlled environment than the Internet's "ARRRGH! BLAAGH! BOOM! FART NOISE!" 2. Lindy West and Jim Norton are not the only two people qualified to have this type of discussion on television. They were, however, my first two choices. Lindy has made a career of intelligent, hilarious, opinionated, truth telling (and not just about lady stuff by the way). And Jim Norton is the rare comic who is hilarious, original, and open, who can also speak intelligently about what it is to be a comic. Most of us comics can't do that and when we are asked to do so it can be a disa ...

Jim Norton & Lindy West Debate Rape Jokes
Huffington Post - over 3 years
If you've noticed that comedians and feminists have been butting heads more and more lately, you're not alone. With "rape jokes" at the heart of the ongoing discussion, there have been no shortage of articles, blogs, tweets and Facebook rants about supposed sexism in comedy, what is and is not ok to joke about, and whether criticism is the same thing as censorship. On Thursday, "Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell" took the conversation to the next level and held a debate between Jezebel writer Lindy West and comedian Jim Norton. Both Norton and West made strong points, hearing each other out without giving up much ground to the other side. While only a 6-minute version of the debate aired on FX, "Totally Biased" has released the entire thing online and we highly recommend you watch it above. Take a look, and then let us know what you think about what Norton and West had to say in the comments.

WATCH: Comedian Shuts Down Lena Dunham Critics On Fox
Huffington Post - over 3 years
Comedian Jim Norton was a guest on "Hannity" on Tuesday, and was given an odd task: To defend Lena Dunham's faux-controversial Memorial Day tweet, in which the "Girls" star posted, "Happy Memorial Day! I've already peed in two different Starbucks bathrooms!" Even Hannity didn't seem to think it was such a big deal. But Norton, a regular on the "Opie and Anthony" radio program as well as "The Tonight Show," faced off against Katie Pavlich, editor of the right-wing Townhall.com. Norton seems to throw Hannity off his script by defending Dunham: "I honestly don't think she was slamming veterans at all," he said, joking that he's a "creep" who enjoys her often-raunchy comedy. But Pavlich disagreed. "It would be nice if Lena Dunham understood the fact that she has the freedom and the ability to write the scripts for her 'Girls' show in English thanks to the men and women who have sacrificed their lives for freedom," she said, apparently imagining an alternate reality "Gi ...
