What to Make of Madonna's Holy Pole-Dancing

I feel almost obligated to be a Madonna fan, since I write novels about the intersection of sex and spirituality. Madonna is probably the world's leading living artist who deals with this sizzling and controversial combo. In fact, I am a fan. She is assuredly a terrific entertainer; she burns with passion and star power. She sure can sing. And Madonna videos make me nervous. Maybe that's a good thing -- or maybe not. I'm not sure. I do know that feeling unsettled can lead one in new and interesting directions, can point to prejudices and highly defended wrong opinions. In this case, I'm still pondering the question, which comes to mind because her latest tour, for her Rebel Heart album, is now circling the world in 64 shows. One thing Madonna and I agree on is a sentiment in the song "Messiah" on this album: "Don't want to get to the end of my days/Saying I wasn't amazed." (Reuters) - Former U.S. Vice President Walter Mondale has been hospitalized with the flu, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune newspaper reported citing former President Jimmy Carter. Carter was speaking at the Nobel Peace Prize Forum in Minneapolis when he announced that Mondale had told him by phone that he was at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, the Tribune reported. The Tribune reported that Mondale, 87, underwent heart surgery last year, just days after his wife, Joan Mondale, died at the age of 83.

At this time, she also served as chairperson of the Federal Council on the Arts and Humanities. As the U.S. Ambassador's wife in Japan, she enthusiastically promoted inter-cultural understanding through art, redecorating the Embassy with American paintings and organising tours with a bi-lingual guide. She studied Japanese art. and impressed the Mayor of Kyoto by presenting him with a ceramic bowl she had made herself in the traditional Mashiko style. Now back in her home state, Mrs. Mondale continues to make her own pottery and promote the arts. She serves on the board of the Minnesota Orchestra, Walker Art Center, Macalester College and the National Portrait Gallery.
