Sundance Film Festival 2014 U.S. Competition Entries Feature Kristen Stewart, John Slattery, Lena Dunham
Huffington Post - about 3 years
Our first major glimpse of next year's indie darlings is here, thanks to the newly unveiled lineup for the Sundance Film Festival. Among the offerings for U.S. competition at next year's fest are the first feature film directed by "Mad Men" star John Slattery, a big-screen return from Lena Dunham and the reliable presence of festival-circuit favorites like John Hawkes and director Joe Swanberg ("Drinking Buddies," "LOL"). The competition is also lathered with genre flicks, from the horrific "Cold in July" and "Life After Beth" to the dramedy trappings of "The Skeleton Twins," which stars Bill Hader, Kristen Wiig, Luke Wilson and Ty Burrell. Still, A-listers like Kristen Stewart, Anne Hathaway, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Aaron Paul are among the featured players, so we can count on the festival to maintain its usual confluence of obscure movies with ever-popular stars. Here are the 16 movies screening in the U.S. competition. All are receiving their world premieres at Sundance. "C ...

'Last Vegas' review: It's surprisingly heartfelt
San Francisco Chronicle - over 3 years
From a distance, "Last Vegas" looked like something not worth seeing, sentimental, not very funny, glossing over the real issues surrounding the shift into old age ... but no. "Last Vegas" is an entertaining movie with a lot of integrity, and it gives all of its actors - all heavyweights and Oscar winners - real moments to dig in and play something. [...] Sam is walking around with a condom and a little blue pill burning a hole in his pocket - gifts from his wife (Joanna Gleason), under the old clause in the marriage contract that says what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. The comedy remains a presence throughout, but "Last Vegas" has a serious purpose, and the resolution of the men's journey of realization is anything but corny. Maybe there are just too many viewers out there thinking about these things, people either Baby Boomer age or older, and so movies can't lie anymore.

Movie Review: Last Vegas -- It Works!
Huffington Post - over 3 years
Viva Douglas, De Niro, Freeman and Kline. This gang pushing seventy takes off for Vegas to celebrate the wedding of its only single member, Billy (Michael Douglas). Paddy (Bobby De Niro), Archie (Morgan Freeman) and Sam (Kevin Kline) are retired and on the verge of packing it in, but decide to give Billy a bachelor party. While the cast of four mega stars has Oscar reverberations, this film would be a clone of The Hangover without its clever script packed with crisp pistol whippin' dialogue written by Dan Fogelman and the agile direction by Jon Turteltaub. Fogelman (The Guilt Trip) has written a celebration of seniors not just for seniors that has start to finish laughs. Genuine heartfelt laughs. The plot is thin, but you won't really care. Sure we have the Medicare gags, a few Viagra gags, but the comedic chops these guys display by working off of each other like an Oscar-worthy improvisational-volley -without -a -pause, makes the price of admission inconsequential and the scrip ...

Cappies Review: Into the Woods at JEB Stuart High School
Annadale Patch - almost 5 years
When viewed through the fogged lens of youth’s innocent idealism, the familiar childhood fables of villainous witches, beautiful princesses, and unlikely heroes are often beloved for their magical wonder and surreal effervescence. Yet these supernatural stories almost always possess much deeper meanings, frequently layered with probing social commentary and important life lessons. This point was fully examined in J.E.B Stuart High School’s willfully silly but insightful production of Into the Woods. With an intricate score and ingenious lyrics provided by the celebrated musical theater icon Stephen Sondheim and complimented by James Lapine’s book, Into the Woods is the musical medley of mainstream fairytale stereotypes into one chaotic storyline. The show first graced the stage in 1987 featuring Broadway stars such as Bernadette Peters and Joanna Gleason, receiving multiple Tony Awards and rave reviews during its premiere run. Intertwined with the stories of many icon ...
