Dennis Michael McKenzie, Fugitive California Rapist, Caught After Publicized Search
Huffington Post - over 3 years
LOS ANGELES — LOS ANGELES (AP) — A publicized search for a paroled rapist who authorities say cut off his ankle monitor and harassed the family of his 80-year-old victim ended Wednesday after he was spotted on a Palm Springs street. A citizen who recognized Dennis Michael McKenzie, 58, from photos in the media tipped off deputies, and a SWAT team took him into custody, San Bernardino County sheriff's spokeswoman Jodi Miller said. Police had asked for the public's help to find McKenzie, who disappeared from a Long Beach halfway house after getting rid of his GPS tracking device. McKenzie's parole agent received a tamper alert Oct. 1 and immediately requested a warrant for his arrest, said Luis Patino, a spokesman for the California Department of Corrections & Rehabilitation. Over the past month McKenzie made more than 50 threatening and obscene phone calls from the Long Beach area to the victim's family home in the San Bernardino Mountains, Miller said. She said the victim's fa ...

Chris Dorner's Body IDENTIFIED
Huffington Post - about 4 years
BIG BEAR LAKE, Calif. (AP) -- Officials say burned remains found in a California mountain cabin have been positively identified as fugitive former police officer Christopher Dorner. San Bernardino County sheriff's spokeswoman Jodi Miller said Thursday that the identification was made through Dorner's dental records. THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below. Karen and Jim Reynolds say they came face to face with fugitive Christopher Dorner, not on a snow-covered mountain trail, but inside their cabin-style condo. During a 15-minute ordeal just a stone's throw from a command post authorities had set up in the massive manhunt for the ex-Los Angeles police officer, the couple said Dorner bound them and put pillowcases on their heads. At one point, he explained that he had been there for days. "He said `I don't have a problem with you, so I'm not going to hurt you,'" Jim Reynolds said. "I didn't believe him; ...

Charred remains found in cabin positively ID'd as Christopher Dorner, police report
Fox News - about 4 years
Charred remains found in a burned out California cabin have been positively identified as that of fugitive ex-cop Christopher Dorner, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Office said Thursday. San Bernardino County sheriff's spokeswoman Jodi Miller said the remains were identified through dental examination in the autopsy. Authorities said other personal effects were found in the cabin, including Dorner's license. Miller did not give a cause of death. The search for Dorner began last week after authorities said he had launched a deadly revenge campaign against the Los Angeles Police Department for his firing, warning that he would bring "warfare" to LAPD officers and their families. The manhunt brought police to Big Bear Lake, 80 miles east of Los Angeles, where they found Dorner's burned-out pickup truck abandoned. His footprints disappeared on frozen soil and hundreds of officers who searched the area and checked out each building failed to find him. Five days later, bu ...

10-acre brush fire burning near Devore
LATimes - over 4 years
Firefighters have stopped the movement of a 10-acre brush fire in the Cajon Pass that forced evacuations and destroyed one nonresidential building and damaged a barn, officials said. The fire was reported just after 3 p.m. in the Devore area, near the Kenwood offramp from Interstate 15, said Bill Peters, a spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. The Kenwood offramp remains closed, Peters said.   About 135 firefighters from multiple agencies have been battling the fire. The cause has not been determined but is under investigation, Peters said. "The responding crews did a great job, and they got on it very, very quickly," he said. Numerous homes and Kimbark Elementary School in Devore were evacuated, but there have been no reports of injuries, said Jodi Miller, a spokeswoman for the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department. Rodney King: Fiancee screaming, sobbing during 911 call
LATimes - over 4 years
Rialto police released the 911 call from Rodney King's fiancee after she found him at the bottom of the pool early Sunday morning. During the five-minute call, Cynthia Kelley is largely unintelligible, crying, yelling and repeatedly begging, “Please hurry up, please. Oh my god.” "He’s not moving," Kelley said. "He’s at the bottom of the swimming pool.” She told detectives she was unable to rescue him herself because she was a poor swimmer. Kelley said she "heard something fall like a table" and when she looked over, she saw King at the bottom of the swimming pool. Authorities pulled King out of the pool, unresponsive. They attempted CPR, but King was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.  Police said King’s body showed no signs of trauma, and no traces of blood were found on the concrete pool deck or in the water. The coroner's office conducted an autopsy Monday, but officials will not have a final cause of death for King until the completion of toxicology tests in six to ...

Rodney King autopsy completed as death investigation continues; results to take weeks
Fox News - over 4 years
An autopsy has been completed on Rodney King, but the results won't be released for several weeks. San Bernardino County sheriff's and coroner's spokeswoman Jodi Miller says King's autopsy was completed Monday. A cause of death will not be determined until after investigators have toxicology results, which typically take between four to six weeks. King was pulled from the deep end of his pool in Rialto, Calif. early Sunday morning. The 47-year-old became famous after he was severely beaten by Los Angeles police in 1991. The acquittal and mistrial of four officers tried with felony assault a year later sparked the Los Angeles riots. Rialto police are investigating King's death as an apparent drowning and say they have found no signs of foul play.

A Farewell From Your Local Editor
Loma Linda Patch - almost 5 years
Late Saturday night, I took the opportunity to deliver some “breaking news” to a friend through instant message. “I’m moving from Redlands,” I told her. “I’m taking over Diamond Bar Patch.” I followed that with a string of sentences expressing a mix of excited nerves and sadness that I now realize made it hard to pin down my feelings about the move. “Change is hard,” she said.  As they say in the news biz, Jessica had unearthed a lead my mind worked hard to bury. Change is hard. It has been my honor and privilege to cover the cities of Redlands and Loma Linda for more than a year. My hope is to settle the family in a place where my husband might have a better chance at finding work. He's been searching for while now. I officially became a Patch Local Editor in November 2010. I left what many considered the security of an established news publication to try my hand at the young start-up called Patch. Among Patch’s biggest successes has been its ability to strip away ...
