Joe Budden Opens Up About His Life With Therapy
Huffington Post - over 1 year
It's not hard for Joe Budden, one of New Jersey's most recognizable rappers, to open up and talk to a therapist. He started when he was just 10 years old. So when VH1 asked him and his ex-girlfriend, Kaylin Garcia, to be among five couples on the latest installment of "Couples Therapy with Dr. Jenn," the decision for him was easy. -- This feed and its contents are the property of The Huffington Post, and use is subject to our terms. Emilio Rojas 'Imagine That' Video Pays Homage While Keeping It Real
Huffington Post - over 1 year
Winter is approaching, and native New York emcee Emilio Rojas is still dropping much-needed heat off his EP "L.I.F.E,," this time with exclusive visuals to his socially conscious track "Imagine That," featuring DeVo D. "Imagine That" takes a refreshing new spin on Nas and Lauryn Hill's classic '90s hit "If I Ruled The World," and throughout the video Emilio touches on important topics affecting communities of color such as immigration, the war on drugs and police brutality. Shot in classic black and white by director Fred Focus, the visuals convey a dark and gritty portrait of American life. Rojas recently told HotNewHipHop about the inspiration behind the song. "There are so many things going in the world right now that I felt compelled to at least try and address some of the issues," he said. "The original Nas record came at a crucial moment -- it really put a focus on a lot of the problems plaguing the urban community at the time. My goal with this song was to do a broader ...

Slaughterhouse Album Coming...But Not Till Eminem Sells 20 Million
MTV News - over 3 years
Last year Slaughterhouse dropped their second studio album welcome to: Our House, which was executive produced by Eminem, and now the boys are ready to release their follow-up LP. Well, almost. According to Joe Budden, the album is complete, but it won't see the light of day until Shady gets his shine. "We're not [releasing] nothing while Em is coming out," Joe Budden told MTV News of the completed Slaughterhouse album. "Let him go ahead and sell his 20 million records and then when he's finished, we'll roll out," he added laughing. "I'm really looking forward to the Slaughterhouse project, partly because this album will be very much like earlier Joe Budden albums," he explained. "Very deep, very introspective and very personal. All of the guys really went in, took it to a different place and just dug much deeper this album, so I really can't wait for the release of this one to see how fans take to it." In the meantime, Joe is also well into record his upcoming EP Some Lov ...

Peter 'Souleo' Wright: Homophobia in Hip-Hop
Huffington Post - over 3 years
When I was growing up, rap's raw sound drew me in, but its repugnant attitudes toward women and the LGBT community left me feeling torn. I love hop-hop but dislike what it has sometimes stood for. Famous rappers and their fans have called me ugly names with no fear of reprisal, and some of my favorite emcees have dropped lyrics that are downright hostile toward who I am: an openly gay, "Generation Y," African-American male. Still, I've never lost faith in hip-hop's power to inspire and uplift. As an activist curator I'm often drawn to the more conscious aspects of hip-hop culture as source material. "Motown to Def Jam," which ended its month-long run in Harlem last week, is my most recent exhibition linking the art world to the world of music. It pays visual homage to the humanist output from four legendary record labels, including Def Jam, an easy target for homophobic assumptions. Over the past three decades, hip-hop has become an important element in every American' ...

Nicki Minaj Returns To Stage She Was Insulted On
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — New York City radio station Hot 97 celebrated its 20th annual Summer Jam concert with young rappers who are dominating the charts, a respected veteran hip-hop group and a slew of surprises. Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey and Lil Kim were among the guest stars of Sunday's show at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. Kendrick Lamar, 2 Chainz, A$AP Rocky and French Montana performed sets that electrified the excited crowd. Wu-Tang Clan hit the stage and were solid, though the energy of the audience – filled with a good number of twentysomethings – dwindled throughout the set. Here's a breakdown of the highlights from Summer XX, which also featured Chris Brown, Miguel, Wale, Fabolous and Joe Budden. ____ SURPRISE: IT'S WEEZY F. BABY AND RICKY ROZAY No offense to French Montana, but Summer Jam XX would have been disappointing if the rapper closed the five-hour concert alone. Thankfully, he brought out Rick Ross ...

'Love & Hip-Hop' Overcomes Backlash
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
ATLANTA — Mona Scott-Young used to wake up in cold sweat at night, wondering if she made the right decision to leave her list of high-profile hip-hop clients to branch off and create reality television shows. That's a dilemma the creator of the popular reality series "Love & Hip-Hop" on VH1 doesn't have to worry about anymore. "I was leaving something that I had built for nearly 20 years of my life," recalled Scott-Young, who was the co-founder of Violator Management with the late Chris Lighty. Their company represented some of music's top artists from LL Cool J to 50 Cent and Missy Elliot. Feeling complacent and unfulfilled, Scott-Young left Violator and started her own film production company, Monami Entertainment. The fear was strong, she said, "But it was exhilarating to start over because I had a new lease on life, venturing into territories unknown for me and just starting from scratch." "Love & Hip-Hop," created with Jim Ackerman, is broken ...

'Love & Hip Hop NY' Reunion Recap: Joe Budden And Consequence Fight
MTV News - almost 4 years
By Sowmya Krishnamurthy Last night on 'Love & Hip Hop NY's' reunion, more truths came to light and not one, but two fights broke out--including one between Joe Budden and Consequence. Yandy first cleared up that her creepy cousin and trainer, Maurice, often takes pictures of her. When Yandy herself saw her provocative photo, she knew it was inappropriate. She opened up about her relationship and got emotional talking about Mendeecee's possible jail time. Yandy shared that her man is in Rochester, awaiting a bail hearing, and she refused to answer any questions about him getting locked up for a prolonged period of time. A fan asked Joe and Rich Dollaz about their naked photos. Joe claimed that his phone was stolen from a strip club but the photo was doctored. Rich also claimed that his photo was falsified but Erica said he was lying. "I stand by what I said," said Erica. Rich and Erica's smash buddy Tiffany then joined onstage. "You were easy," said Erica about how she scoop ...

Tahiry Makes An Impression On 'Love & Hip Hop' Debut
MTV News - about 4 years
By Sowmya Krishnamurthy The star of last night's season premiere of "Love & Hip-Hop" was hands down Tahiry Jose, Joe Budden's ex girlfriend and urban model. Feisty and possibly a little insane, Tahiry kicked off the episode by pushing a table at Joe and then literally chucking a drink at Raqi Thunda. When she wasn't throwing beverages, Tahiry dropped jaws in skin tight outfits covering her very voluptuous backside. Fans, many male, took to Twitter to share their love with hashtags like "#TahiryAppreciationDay." "Camera made sure to pan down on Tahiry's assets, good job," tweeted a male admirer along with,"Tahiry about to knock over a table every episode." "Tahiry is wearing hot chick crown now! Its over!" shared Funkmaster Flex of Hot 97 on Twitter. Even women gave her props for her bodacious bod. "I'm mesmerized when Tahiry walks away," said one fan. "Tahiry in those shorts though O_O," gawked another female fan, commenting on Tahiry's itty bitty shorts at the episode' ...
