Kevin Smith: “Mallrats 2″ represents the rare 90’s movie reunion
Hollywood News - almost 2 years
As a pretty big fan of filmmaker Kevin Smith, I tend to be inclined to support whatever project he’s interested in making, be it a new movie, a new podcast, or anything in between. Even so, I was initially a bit confused as to why Smith was looking to follow up Clerks III (which I’m hugely looking forward to) and his next two Canadian set genre outings (this year’s Yoga Hosers and the still to be shot Moose Jaws) with a sequel to Mallards. Yes, it’s developed over the years from a box office disappointment to one of his most beloved titles, but was anyone yearning for Mallrats 2? Then, I listened to Smith explain why and now, not just am I on board, I think it has the potential to be the rare 90’s movie reunion that really works. The reason that Smith decided to make Mallrats 2 was to honor his friend and Mallrats producer Jim Jacks, who passed away about a year ago. As a way of honoring Jacks, a man who had once upon a time championed a potential sequel, Smith recently decided to make ...

George Zimmerman's De Facto Spokesman Launches a White-Power Podcast
Mother Jones - over 3 years
Yesterday, after George Zimmerman was taken into custody for allegedly threatening his estranged wife with a gun, HLN turned to a familiar source for commentary: Zimmerman's neighbor and de facto media emissary, Frank Taaffe. In an interview with HLNTV.com reporter Graham Winch, Taaffe argued that Zimmerman was distraught because his wife, Shellie, was trying to take his Rottweiler. "Now, that's pretty vindictive," Taaffe said. Ever since Zimmerman gained notoriety by fatally shooting Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black teenager, Taaffe has been his most visible and outspoken defender. As Mother Jones has reported, Taaffe also happens to be a fire-breathing racist. And he now has a new forum to air his inflammatory views. Shortly after Zimmerman's July acquittal on murder charges, Taaffe appeared on two episodes of the white-separatist podcast, The White Voice, and unleashed a string of racist diatribes. At the time, he claimed that he had gone on the show in response to a routine ...

'Chasing Amy' To 'Argo': Ben Affleck's Five Defining Films
MTV News - over 4 years
By Colin Greten Ben Affleck has been in the Hollywood spotlight for a long time now, but as a star, he has taken on many different forms. He has gone from an Oscar-winning screenwriter, to a leading man, to a disreputable actor and the butt of jokes, to acclaimed director. With his latest film "Argo" now receiving praise—many claiming it's the best of the year—it's safe to wonder how Affleck made this transformation. We've been able to break it down to five movies, so here are the films that have defined the journey of Ben Affleck. "Chasing Amy" (1997) "Chasing Amy" was "Clerks" director Kevin Smith's third feature film and one of the first starring roles for the young Affleck. He already made an appearance in Smith's "Mallrats," but "Chasing Amy" gave him the chance to prove he could carry a film with some dramatic themes, as he falls in love with the perfect girl (Joey Lauren Adams), who turns out to also be a lesbian. Although the film is low-budget, it was decently succes ...

Domesticated Quail Are Bad Prey
D Magazine - about 5 years
Got a note from reader Joe Adams about my story recounting my husband’s first Christmas at Nightengale Farms, which you can read here. He enjoyed the piece (though he’s worried I may get some negative response to it). Seems pen-raised quail don’t make the best prey for multiple reasons. The piece brought back similar memories from one of my hunting episodes. We shot pen-raised birds on a bitterly cold day along the Red River. A temperature in the teens and strong north wind caused continual eye tearing, but the pheasants and chukars flushed reasonably well during the initial session. Later in the morning, our attention turned to the quail which had also been released in the pre-dawn hours. Walking one field, I could see a quail standing like a lone sentinel on a rock still quite a distance away. I was surprised when it failed to fly as I moved within shooting range, and then even as I walked alongside. Upon nudging it with my boot, the frozen quail fell over stiffly on the rock–appa ...
