New Recordings Of Old Music: Vivaldi, Valentini, Manchicourt, Gesualdo, Bach & More
Huffington Post - 10 days
Vivaldi Seven Cello Concertos. Guy Fishman. Olde Focus CD With seven members of the Handel and Haydn Society, Guy Fishman invigorates and illuminates a brilliant selection of Vivaldi's cello concertos, once more affirming the genius of the composer, the cello and historically-informed performances on period instruments. Playing on a 1704 Roman instrument by David Techler, Fishman shows the mentoring effects of distinguished teachers from Laurence Lesser to Anner Bylsma: he possesses a gorgeous sound and always follows the long line--yet he knows his way around embellishments and filling out the continuo. Check out the magic in the slow movement of RV 418 and I guarantee you will be convinced. Souvenirs d'Italie: Mr Harrach's Musical Diaries. Maurice Steger. Harmonia Mundi CD Played with Swiss flauto dolce and recorder virtuoso Maurice Steger's customary death-defying magnificence, this deliriously delightful program of concertos and sonatas by Sammartini, Caldara (an amazi ...

The 'Game Of Thrones' Cast 'Sings' The Theme Song
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
The "Game of Thrones" theme may not have any words, but that doesn't mean you can't sing it, right? MTV Geek challenged "Game of Thrones" castmembers to sing the theme at the Season 3 premiere on Monday. In the video above, enjoy the efforts of Ben Hawkey (Hot Pie), Esme Biano (Ros), Maise Williams (Arya Stark), Rose Leslie (Ygritte), Lena Heady (Cersei Lannister), Carice van Houten (Melisandre), Isaac Hempstead-Wright (Bran Stark), Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark), Michelle Fairey (Catelyn Stark), and John Bradley (Samwell Tarly), who claimed he's actually the one who recorded the theme for the show. This wasn't Williams's, 'Hempstead-Wright's or Turner's first time doing their own musical take on the "Game of Thrones" theme: The Stark children rapped and beatboxed the intro in an extra on the Season 2 DVD/Blu-ray. Watch the cast's hilarious attempts to "la la," "dun dun" and "do do" through the "Game of Thrones" theme song above and watch the "Parenthood" cast's effo ...

Jack Darin: Protecting Illinois From Fracking
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
The prospect of the gas industry coming Illinois to extract gas from beneath our state using high-volume hydraulic fracturing has caused a great deal of controversy and concern, especially in parts of Illinois where leasing for drilling rights has been underway for well over a year. Horror stories from other states about open pits of toxic wastewater, secret brews of toxins injected into the earth, air emissions sickening neighbors, and contaminated drinking water are just a few of the impacts seen elsewhere. Can we stop the industry from bringing fracking to Illinois? When legislators proposed a two-year moratorium on the practice last year, we strongly supported that proposal, and we support continued calls for a moratorium today. However, we also need to acknowledge that fracking is legal today in Illinois, and for all we know, may already be occurring as you read this. We also need to recognize that our current laws regulating oil and gas drilling, originally pas ...

Game of Thrones Season Two - Episode 5 Review
Flickering Myth - almost 5 years
Oliver Davis reviews the fifth episode of Game of Thrones Season Two... The Ghost of Harrenhal. Directed by David Petrarca. Written by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. This week was a mixed bag. We were spoilt with Joffrey’s douchebagery last week, but here he’s not present at all. Stannis Baratheon (Stephen Dillane) and Davos Seaworth (Liam Cunningham), arguably the two most engaging characters besides Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage), only graced a single scene. And whereas the previous episode had ended with Davos aghast at a strange, shadowy presence that emerged from between Melisandre’s (Carice van Houten) legs, this week’s ended comparatively weakly, with Jaqen H'ghar (Tom Wlaschiha) eating an apple. Catelyn …turns out that Melisandre’s hellish offspring was a shadow assassin sent to murder Renly (Gethin Anthony). Catelyn (Michelle Fairley) and Brienne (Gwendoline Christie) were the only ones present at the time, so, naturally, everyone assumes they killed one of th ...
