The Seattle Seahawks’ 2012 Draft Class: One for the ages
isports web - almost 2 years
Coming off two straight 7-9 seasons in 2010 and 2011, the Seattle Seahawks entered the offseason with question marks at several positions. Entering the 2012 draft, the team still had several holes to fill. What happened in April 2012 ultimately steered the team in the right direction, as seen by the results of the past three seasons. While the jury is still out on the 2013 and 2014 draft classes, the jury has already made a unanimous decision regarding the Seahawks’ 2012 draft class, one that will go down as one of the best draft classes in league history. This is just another example of why one shouldn’t evaluate drafts the day after it occurred. The Seahawks did so well, in fact, that the team obtained one player for nearly every single position while getting great value, which is unheard of. Let’s examine and evaluate each member of the “The Draft.” 1st Round: Bruce Irvin, Edge Bruce Irvin I list Irvin as an “edge” player here because he plays both outside linebacker and the ...

Joel L. Watts: A Theologian's Review of Man of Steel
Huffington Post - over 3 years
I am unsure as where to start. This movie is everything one could hope for in a Superman movie in today's current cinematic sphere. It has the naturalness of "realistic," as much as realism is attached to a story about aliens and a man who can fly. Several key story elements are re-worked, not so that this is simply an update or re-imagination. No, instead what this movie does is to fix certain elements of the story long expired but capture the hope and dream of the Superman arc, to refocus it back to where many of us have known it to always be. Warning -- Minimal Spoilers. Superman will always contain the messiah myth(os) as told by Christians. This is not surprising given the context of creation of the character or of the ethnicity of the creators. Indeed, the key to writing good fiction is to use the myths of the cultures so as to steal, pardon the pun, the emotional attachment. While fanboys and critics may joke about Bryan Singer's Superman Returns and the overin ...

LISTEN: World's Oldest Sound Recording Remastered In Digital Audio
Huffington Post - over 4 years
The oldest known recording in the world has been heard again after it was converted digitally. The recording, made on Thomas Edison's sound recording machine in 1878, is now little more than a flimsy piece of tinfoil. Originally a hand crank would have turned the cylinder under a sylus, which would create the recording. After a few listens the foil would usually be torn, and the pieces would be handed out as souveniers. Very few of these recordings remain, and none can be played without destroying them. But the bumps and grooves on the recorded were able to be mapped optically and turned into a digital file - meaning it can now be heard for the first time in decades. "We couldn't touch it," said John Schneiter at the Museum of Innovation and Science in New York. "To touch it is to destroy it." The recording features 78 seconds of sound, including a coronet solo and a man reciting two nursery rhymes - and actually getting the words wrong to "Old Mother Hubbard ...

'The Bourne Legacy': What Happens After The Title Character Is Ditched?
Moviefone Blog - over 4 years
A bit lost in the fact that Matt Damon does not appear in the latest Jason Bourne movie, The Bourne Legacy, is that Jason Bourne does not appear in The Bourne Legacy. On the surface, this may seem like the same thing. But Damon's non-inclusion has been such a big story Bourne's non-appearance has been somewhat lost. This is actually quite remarkable: For crying out loud, the character's name is in the title of the movie. Could you imagine a Harry Potter movie in which Harry Potter does not appear? Now, this has been attempted a handful of times in the past, but the results haven't been particularly stellar. In fact, it could be considered the Kobayashi Maru of character scenarios. Actually, two examples in particular stand out: Smokey and the Bandit Part 3 and The Dukes of Hazzard. (Yes, Valerie sort of qualifies. Valerie Harper was famously written out of her self-titled show -- her character was actually killed -- and the show was, briefly, renamed Valerie's Family. But then it w ...

Local Firm to Market Rec Center
New Port Richey Patch - almost 5 years
City officials are pledging to pay a local public relations firm to market the New Port Richey Recreation and Aquatic Center over the next several months. City Manager John Schneiger said the city is pledging $3,500 per month to deChant Public Relations to spread the word about the center. The firm is run by former City Councilwoman Marilynn deChant and business partner Lia Gallegos. The deal is for three months of service, with the option to extend to the end of September, while the city’s elected officials mull hiring a long-term marketing person. The agreement takes effect as soon as it is signed, Schneiger said. “We really do feel a sense of urgency that we’ve got to get going on this,” Schneiger told the City Council Tuesday. The New Port Richey city government is faced with the reality that the recreation center’s revenues are nowhere near close to covering its costs. The crash corridor: Elyria’s accident totals far outstrip its size, with worst along Route 57
Chronicle Online - almost 5 years
ELYRIA — There were 1,524 motor vehicle accidents in Elyria in 2011, more than in any other city in Lorain County, according to the Ohio Department of Public Safety. Despite having a smaller population than Lorain, Elyria surpasses it in crashes. Parma, which has more than 25,000 more residents than Elyria, had 478 fewer accidents in 2011. The source of most of Elyria’s accidents is state Route 57, a hot spot for traffic turmoil. Of three fatal accidents in Elyria in 2011, an accident on Route 57 accounted for one. That was in September, when a 14-year-old boy on a bicycle crossing the intersection of Route 57 and East Broad Street was hit by a van after the traffic signal turned green. [caption id="attachment_117281" align="alignright" width="550" caption="."][/caption] According to a police analysis, state Route 57 contributed to eight of the top 10 accident spots in Elyria in 2011 and seven in 2010. The report was compiled using data from the Police Department. It details inter ...

‘October Baby’ Going Strong at Box Office
Charisma - almost 5 years
Pro-life drama October Baby posted another strong showing in its second week at the box office. Released March 23, it claimed the No. 2 spot for films showing in fewer than 500 theaters and ranked seventh in per-screen average for the top 20 films, despite only showing in 387 theaters. “People don’t leave the theater arguing their views on abortion,” said Andy Erwin, who directed the film with his brother, Jon. “But it does open conversations that are spilling into the lobbies and parking lots of theaters, and we’re hearing that those conversations are meaningful to people.” Distributed by Samuel Goldwyn Films and Provident Films, October Baby claimed the No. 8 spot at the box office (No. 1 in limited release) its opening weekend against competition that included the record-setting The Hunger Games, which opened in 10 times as many theaters. Goldwyn and Provident plan to hold the theater count steady until Easter, then expand April 13, possibly to 150 additional theaters. For ...

Pro-life 'October Baby' rejected by major studios, blitzes box office
Fox News - almost 5 years
“The Hunger Games” wasn’t the only film to hit box office paydirt this past weekend. Although it only opened in 390 theaters, the anti-abortion drama “October Baby,” starring John Schneider, earned the second-highest-per-screen average, bringing in almost $2 million in ticket sales. “I was shattered when I first learned about the story. I was moved and mesmerized. I wasn’t an activist, I was just someone who was shattered by the truth,” director Jon Erwin told FOX411’s Pop Tarts. “Here is our little film, small budget, in the top ten (at the box office). We are thrilled, blown away.” “October Baby” follows the emotional journey of a young woman who learns that she was almost aborted, but at the last minute was instead given up for adoption. The film almost didn’t see the light of day. “This film couldn’t find a home, no studio wanted to touch it. It was considered too controversial,” Erwin continued. “There was a real moment of despair at one point, the film wasn’t finish ...

October Baby: Do you feel wanted?
Canadian Christianity - almost 5 years
Almost everyone wants to be wanted – by their spouse, lover, friends, parents. How would you feel if a person whose love you craved not only didn’t want you but also tried to eliminate you? For 19-year-old Hannah Lawson, that feeling drives a quest to discover her real identity. You see, she’s just learned the likely cause of her mysterious lifelong health problems: She’s the product of a failed abortion attempt. The new movie October Baby traces Hannah’s journey of bewilderment, anger and anguish as she searches for her birth mother and wrestles with family secrets. Romance, laughter, faith and forgiveness mix with pain and turmoil on this attractive teen’s odyssey. Choices and Consequences; Caring, not Condemning Abortion, of course, is a thematic powder keg, and this film – inspired by a true story – may generate some provocative headlines. But it’s screenplay is caring – not condemning – in fleshing out the human consequences of choices and reconciliation. Actress R ...
