'Unsung' Kicks Off New Season With Issac Hayes
Huffington Post - about 4 years
TV One’s music series, “Unsung,” is set to follow up its award-winning success with the premiere of their sixth season on January 23. As expected, the network has culled various veteran artists including Isaac Hayes, Midnight Star, EPMD, Lou Rawls, Eddie Kendricks, The Whispers, Mint Condition, and Johnny Gill to highlight the business and personal struggles that kept each artist from achieving commercial success. Though some may disagree with a few of the aforementioned names commercial acclaim, one R&B diva who viewers will never see on the series is Stephanie Mills. In speaking with the Huffington Post last year, Mills explained why she’s reluctant to be featured on the hour long series. "I don't like that show. They have approached me quite a few times, but I [won't] do that show…I don't feel unsung. I feel like I've had a wonderful career. I've done wonderful things and met so many wonderful different people. So I don't feel like I'm unsung at all." Check ...

Osborne Classic A Success
This webpage is not available - over 4 years
Rhode Island already has the CVS Caremark Charity Classic but it looks like another local celeb is set to bring some serious star power to theOceanStateon a yearly basis. The inaugural Jeffrey Osborne Celebrity Classic was like many of Osborne’s best songs, a hit. WPRI/WNAC was the media sponsor of the event so we got to spend two days mingling with and interviewing the likes of Magic Johnson, Sinbad, Smokey Robinson and Johnny Gill to name a few.  In the world of sports coverage it’s easy to be numbed by the standard “Take it one day at a time”, “We won’t overlook any opponent” droning that we hear on a daily basis. The chance to chat with a platinum artist is a welcome change. Jeffrey, a wonderful man by the way, joined me for my six o’clock sports cast but the best conversation was off camera before the interview. Osborne told me his story about leaving Rhode Island when he was 19 to pursue his career in LA, living proof that dreams can come true if you’re willing to take a shot. ...

Clay Cane: Go the Way Your Blood Beats: Frank Ocean Frees Himself and Others
The Huffington Post - over 4 years
Stop the press: A mainstream, black, male artist in hip-hop revealed his first love was with a man. Only weeks before the release of Frank Ocean's debut solo album on Def Jam, Channel Orange, he opened up about his sexuality via Tumblr.  A huge risk for the member of the edgy hip-hop group Odd Future -- admitting you are anything but heterosexual and ultra-masculine in hip-hop normally equates career suicide, which is what makes the 24-year-old's admission so powerful -- his honesty is more important than the album sales.   Only an hour into Independence Day, Ocean posted: "Four summers ago, I met somebody. I was 19 years old. He was too. We spent that summer, and the summer after, together. Every day almost, and on the day we were together, time would glide. Most of the day I'd see him, and his smile. By the time I realized I was in love, it was malignant. It was hopeless."  He described a deep love that forever changed him, staying with the singer-songwriter for years. Oc ...

Love and Frustration at the United Methodist Conference
Campus Progressive - over 4 years
Johnny Gall’s Facebook profile picture encapsulates his spiritual homelessness in blue paint on a plywood silhouette: “God called me. The church won’t have me. Now what?” As a gay man and a Methodist pursuing ordination, Gall is trapped between vocation and frustration. He received a Dean’s Fellowship to Boston University School of Theology just months before the United Methodist Church’s General Conference voted down a resolution that would allow for a diversity of thought regarding gender and sexual minorities. However, after participating in a protest meant to draw attention to LGBT Methodists, Gall left the conference — and its decision to reaffirm anti-gay platitudes in the church — with a renewed faith in his God. Organizers of the protest, MOSAIC and Affirmation (two queer groups that advocate for increasing acceptance of LGBT people in the Methodist church), have urged the denomination to grow in its acceptance of sexual minorities for forty years,  and both ...

Spotted: Matt Kemp Puts In Work For Habitat For Humanity
Crunktastical - almost 5 years
Johnny Gill’s current cell phone wallpaper, Los Angeles Dodger star Matt Kemp, exchanged his baseball cap for a hard hat to assist in demolishing a property to make room for two brand new Habitat for Humanity homes last Tuesday (April 24) in Lynwood, California. Mr. Baseball: Matt Kemp covers Forbes magazine “It puts a lot of things in perspective,” Kemp said about the humbling experience. “Growing up, I wasn’t the richest, we didn’t have the most money. My mom worked hard and she made it through and helped me with everything, but I recognize that there’s a lot of people out there who have been in worse situations than I’ve ever been in, so for someone living in a three-bedroom home with 13 people, I don’t know how to envision going through that growing up. So for a family like this to get their home, to get their chance, it’s good to be a part of something like this.” Check out Matt’s ex-girlfriend Rihanna call the goats home with ceremonial coochie thrusts in her new mu ...
