CultureZohn: I Spent New Year's Eve In Bed With Warren Beatty
Huffington Post - about 2 months
Ok, so you know the drill by now. I'm home, it's almost 2017, and I need to crawl into bed with someone exciting, sexy, dynamic, legendary, to lift myself up over the hulking mess of New Year's Eve. This year, I knew had to think big, really really big, especially big, to face down the looming disaster of 45. I combed the bestseller list for a Keith Richards or Richard Burton-equivalent (my previous NY eve boon companions), and all I could come up with was Bruce Springsteen and Robbie Robertson and no offense, I've never been a Bruce babe and as much as I like Music from Big Pink, after seeing the Scorcese docu I found Robbie a wee bit self-important and limelight-stealing from his fellow Band members. As I was pondering this biggest of date nights, Carrie Fisher died, and I, like many others, rewound her career and came upon her first acting gig in Shampoo, and there he was staring me in the face. Warren! Warren could help me enter 2017 and get me some moxie back: if anyone ...

Jay Weston: Bill Stadiem's New Moneywood: Hollywood in Its Last Age of Excess Is a Scandalous, Fascinating Exposé
Huffington Post - about 4 years
I have casually known author William Stadiem for several decades, ever since he was restaurant critic of Los Angeles magazine and we shared meals together while reviewing the venues. I found him to be a charming, perceptive and close-lipped fellow who always wore a half-smile of incredulity as he wrote his notes in a little book. Now I know what he considered incredible... the entire Hollywood scene of which I was an active part and of which he was an astute silent observer. This is a guy with a Harvard JD/MBA who has written eight books, most of them best-sellers, about subjects as diverse as Frank Sinatra's valet, George Hamilton's women and Marilyn Monroe's maid. But I learned never to sell him short, for his book, Dear Senator, about the hidden black daughter of the virulent anti-segregationist Senator Strom Thurmond of South Carolina, set off a firestorm in the South that is still reverberating. Bill Stadien, author of the book. No, this is a journalist with ...

Margaret M. Kruse: Separating the Wheat From the Chaff: Distinguishing Great State Judges in Illinois' Partisan Judicial Elections
Huffington Post - over 4 years
In Illinois, we elect state court judges. We're one of 23 states that do, but one of only eight states that do so in partisan fashion. Voting for judges on ballots with party affiliations alongside their names creates a couple of issues. First, it naturally causes the state judiciary to fall victim to specific political influences, introducing partiality in a realm where we deserve impartiality. Second, political polarization removes the thought from an exercise that should be imbued with it; that is, who's presiding over state court matters? The current process supports lazy voting, as people punch a straight party ticket, overlooking highly qualified judges our state desperately needs. Until Illinois residents demand an end to the partisan judicial elections, moving to merit-based nominations and appointments, the state will lack qualified judges that we deserve. To be sure, most people don't believe they'll ever end up in a courtroom. Until voters find themse ...

Slain youth pastor was doing 'everything right,' friends say
LATimes - over 4 years
// <![CDATA[ // <![CDATA[ brightcove.createExperiences(); // ]]> // ]]> The 23-year-old youth pastor shot and killed this week in Venice was doing "everything right" and appears to have been the victim of random violence, friends and authorities said. At a news conference to announce a $50,000 reward from the city, people who knew Oscar Duncan, a former football captain and homecoming king, said he was an upstanding young man. “Anything else said about Oscar on a negative side is absolutely incorrect, wrong, 110%,” Pastor Michael Fisher said. On Thursday morning, police retold the events that led to Duncan's fatal shooting. Lt. John Radtke said Duncan was in front of his home Monday when a group of people drove up in a white car. Radtke said Duncan was drawn to the car by comments made by someone inside before he was shot in the head. The suspects are believed to have been gang members, although Duncan had no ties to gangs or a criminal ...

Bill Rosendahl Responds to Third Ave Encampment Questions
MarVista Patch - almost 5 years
Los Angeles City Councilman Bill Rosendahl is responding to questions over the 3rd Avenue homeless encampment in Venice. It can be found here and is included below in its entirety: Dear Friends, As many of you know, we have a crisis of homelessness in this nation, and it is particularly acute in Los Angeles and in Venice. In recent weeks, with encampments in Venice growing, the community dialogue has become heated. Some people have spread distorted or false information, and then demanded action based upon such misinformation, complicating the City’s efforts to find solutions to our shared problems. In order to clear the air, share accurate information, and shed some light, my staff has compiled a FAQ (frequently asked questions) about the situation: What is going on with the encampments in Venice? Over the past year, encampments of people in bedrolls, tents, or cardboard boxes began to proliferate in Venice, mostly along Ocean Front Walk. Many of the people w ...

WATCH: How To Protect Your Apple Products
Huffington Post - almost 5 years
Given this latest crime report, you may want to invest in some black (albeit, less cool) earbuds. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) said Wednesday that there has been an uptick in robberies of iPhones and iPods across the city, CBS reports. What tips robbers off to the fact that it's Apple? The white earbuds. The LAPD has responded to three thefts in Venice Beach in the past week, including one that got physical. The police said that the trend is city-wide and some of the many second-hand Apple products on Craigslist are stolen. The news comes after the AT&T, Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile and Sprint announced Tuesday they will create a central database to track stolen phones and prevent them from being reactivated, the Los Angeles Times reports. The database is supposed to be available for most phones by Nov. 30. In the meantime, the LAPD advised that phone owners enable GPS on their devices. “We had an arrest that was related to one of the Venice Beach ...

More Details Hide Details Jon Peters was a producer for the adaptation of the Sandman comics for Warner Brothers, which met with controversy. One draft script commissioned by Peters was reviewed on the Internet at Ain't It Cool News, and was met with scorn. Sandman creator Neil Gaiman called the last screenplay that Warner Brothers would send him " not only the worst Sandman script I've ever seen, but quite easily the worst script I've ever read." By 2001, the project had become stranded in development hell. In a 2005 interview, Gaiman commented: "But Sandman movies, they just got increasingly appalling. It was really strange. They started out hiring some really good people and you got Elliott and Rossio and Roger Avary came in and did a draft. They were all solid scripts. And then Jon Peters fired all of them and got in some people who take orders, and who wanted fistfights and all this stuff. It had no sensibility and it was just they were horrible."

Peters later produced the 1999 steampunk western Wild Wild West, the finale of which features a giant mechanical spider.
More Details Hide Details Smith met Peters after completing a script and Peters instructed him to include a robot sidekick for Brainiac, a fight scene between Brainiac and two polar bears, and a marketable "space dog" pet, similar to Star Wars character Chewbacca. Smith inserted them into his script, but the project was abandoned and the script discarded. In Look, Up in the Sky: The Amazing Story of Superman, Jon Peters admitted that the Superman franchise was problematic for him: "The elements that I was focusing on were away from the heart, it was more leaning towards 'Star Wars' in a sense, you know. I didn't realize the human part of it, I didn't have that."
