7 Face Serums Editors Swear By, And Why You Should Use Them
Huffington Post - 5 months
It seems like everyone’s been talking about face serums lately. So, we figured it was a good time to have a chat about what serums are, why we should use them, and which ones are great. What are face serums? Face serums are lightweight moisturizers that deliver powerful ingredients directly into your skin. You usually put them on after cleansing but before moisturizing. They’re made of “smaller molecules that can penetrate deeply into the skin and deliver a very high concentration of active ingredients.” Serums are ace at making skin look fresher, younger and healthier. How often do I use this stuff? Once a day should do the trick ― you don’t need a lot to go a long way.  Do I need to use face serum? No, and not everyone should. If you have a chronic skin condition, like eczema or rosacea, the active ingredients in serums could aggravate your skin. That said, if you have the right skin type, serums do help improve how your skin l ...

The 6 Best Beauty Subscription Boxes
Huffington Post - over 3 years
Being a beauty editor certainly has its perks, but the biggest benefit has to be the beauty samples. I transform into a human guinea pig the very moment I rip into the pretty packaging and see the bottles of nail polish, perfume and shampoo that have yet to hit shelves. Now, thanks to the rise of beauty subscription boxes, women (and men) who may not work within the fashion industry can now get their hands on the goods. Beauty subscriptions are also a great way to try out under-the-radar brands without committing to a full-size product or the full price. Tina Turnbow: Bridal Beauty Spotlight
Huffington Post - over 3 years
'Tis the season when wedding planning and preparations are in full swing. I caught up with one lovely bride-to-be recently, Irini Arakas in her studio where she designs wonderful accessories for her company Prova. Not long ago she was writing about designers for Vogue, now tables have turned and she couldn't be happier. (Her recent scarf collection is not to be missed.) We got together for a makeup trial for her outdoor wedding, taking place at the end of June. She won't be the most conventional of brides, but the details of her dress are not to be revealed, in case her fiancé sees this before the special day. I can, however, reveal the details of her makeup. Here's the cosmetic scoop! Before & After Before: Here I simply moisturized Irini's skin and really gave it a good massage, with Jurlique Moisture Replenishing Day Cream. I then applied Skyn Iceland Hydro Cooling Firming Eye Gels under the eyes, for 10 minutes. To get her lips nice and hydrated I put a touch of ...

Diana Ryu: Hed: My Favorite Palette-Cleansing Blogs
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
I love blogs. I devour them. I go through hundreds of them every morning and nearly had a fit when I caught wind of Google pulling the plug on their subscriber-based, aggregate program, Reader. The subject matter of my dailyreads run the gamut, from interior design to culture, food to fashion, and I am attached to them with nearly the same addictive behavior as a smoker: Don't bother me 'til I've ingested my daily dose of hi-res images. I was a loyal reader even before the savvy industry pioneers started to use affiliate links to make money and were poached by agents to manage their hefty brand contracts. I've been along for the ride to see bloggers rise to legitimate celebrity status and get excited because I feel like I know them. And while I love myself a beautiful, crisp, "Outfit Of The Day," sometimes I need a palette cleanser of sorts to remind myself that I'm not reading these guys out of habit, but because I actually value them as tastemakers. When the images, topics a ...

Kerstin Shamberg: 5 Essential Beauty Tricks I Learned in My 20s
The Huffington Post - about 4 years
As I near the end of my twenties, it's only natural to look back and reflect on what I've learned in this decade of my life. I'm getting much better at not sweating the small stuff, my priorities in life are shifting and I know the value of work-life balance and a good night's sleep. But I've also had the opportunity to be around some amazing women on the beauty scene in New York and they have taught me essential, game-changing beauty tricks that I will take with me into my thirties and beyond. Here are five of my favorites: Get a professional blow dryer If you had asked me a few years ago if I would ever spend $170 on a hair dryer, I would have laughed in your face. I didn't like to spend a lot on beauty supplies and was satisfied with my $30 hair dryer from CVS. Nonetheless, I always wondered why I couldn't get even close to a salon-quality blowout at home. I probably asked my stylist (who also happens to be one of my best friends in the world) a hundred times what I w ...

Sierra: Jessica Alba Loves Kids, Hates Chemicals
Huffington Post - over 4 years
You might have seen Jessica Alba kill a bad guy with a stiletto heel in the gory action flick Machete. You might also have spotted her on the cover of Maxim (twice). But fewer people probably caught her on C-SPAN lecturing Congress about the urgency of passing laws to regulate the chemicals in the products we buy. A staunch environmental advocate, the 31-year-old star recently launched the Honest Company, which makes nontoxic, ecofriendly baby gear. She took some time to answer our questions about her commitment to safe chemistry.  Q: Why did you go to D.C. to lobby for the Safe Chemicals Act last year? A: Basically, it's legislation that hasn't been reformed in more than 30 years. It's about regulating chemicals in everyday products. There are more than 80,000 chemicals in the U.S. marketplace right now -- only five have been banned. In Europe, 1,100 are banned because they're not safe for humans. When they're creating and selling new chemicals, companies aren't thinking a ...

Amy Tara Koch: High Anxiety: Keeping it Chic at 32,000 Feet
Huffington Post - over 4 years
I am packing for France. In fact, I am always packing for somewhere. Traveling a lot is difficult. But, it offers a crash course in efficiency. I know how to finesse an upgrade. I know how to minimize contact with cooties. But, the most valuable lesson was mastering the high art of staying stylish-and comfortable-at 32,000 feet. The trick is dressing-and packing a carry on-with intention. The intention to look and feel good for ten hours when trapped in a cramped, scuzzy cabin with fluctuating temperature and no humidity. Each time I board a plane, I hear my grande dame of a granny's words booming in my ear: "Always dress to impress! You can never make a second first impression." She's right. When you look good, you feel good. And, you never know (I've connected with fashion designers, beauty impresarios and hotel honchos) who you might cross paths with at high altitude. Airline travel has its own sartorial code. One cannot schlep overseas clad in a structured Haider Acker ...

Huffington Post - over 4 years
Green Your Beauty Routine for Pregnancy! By: Latham Thomas Pregnancy is the perfect time to mix it up with your beauty regimen. Pregnant clients often ask me what beauty products they should be using to cut down on their chemical consumption. What passes through your skin can potentially pass through the blood-placental barrier to your baby, so it's worth cleansing your vanity cabinet and stocking up on high-quality products. If you are intending to get pregnant, this is an essential part of the process that so many women overlook. There are countless brands out there loaded with chemicals that aren't so great for you, and certainly not good for your baby. How do you know what is safe to use? Would You Try A Bronzer With Oil In It?
Huffington Post - over 4 years
By: Connie Tai,TheKit.ca Can’t get enough of Argan oil? Neither can I. Perhaps that’s why I’m smitten by Josie Maran’s Argan Brightening Bronzer Sun Spot Corrector. This little compact contains bearberry extract and Vitamin C to brighten the skin (don’t worry—no hydroquinone found in this formula!) and contains a natural SPF for some light sun protection. Related: Best Sunscreen Essentials From Shoppers Drug Mart Note, however, that you should still apply a regular SPF everyday. Natural SPF’s are usually not sufficient. They typically give you an SPF anywhere between five and 10. And because you can’t be certain how much protection you are actually getting, make sure you are using an actual sunscreen (e.g. any product that makes a numerical SPF claim) to prevent pre-mature ageing and sun damage.
