12.9.15 #SongBlogIV (my song of the day): "White Iverson (Remix)" by Post Malone ft. French Montana and Slim Jimmy In a year where there were rap feuds (Meek Mill and Drake) and controversy, a few rappers were able to get a breakout hit. Post Malone was no different. Called "the most random success" by the Fader magazine, Post Malone's first single is a great one. This remix featuring French Montana and Slim Jimmy (Rae Sremmurd) is even better. SEE: http://www.thefader.com/2015/05/14/everything-you-need-to-know-about-post-malone One thing that is important to note however, is that Post Malone is this breakout rapper from Dallas this year (and in a while, quite honestly). But there are a couple more Dallas rappers you should check out. Here are 4 Dallas rappers you may have not heard of and/or you should revisit: 1. The D.O.C: It's Funky He's worked with heavyweights - Dr. Dre, N.W.A. You might have also seen him portrayed on this year's Straight Outta Compton. ...

A Feminist Takedown of Usher's 'I Don't Mind'
Huffington Post - almost 2 years
Usher has brought us some classics over the years -- "U-Turn," "U Got It Bad," "Yeah" -- and I am not ashamed to admit that my sister and I took the time to learn the words and any relevant dance routines to these songs. Outside of his work, he has also gifted the world with his wisdom on the topics of appearance and a woman's role in his life: "Appearance is something you should definitely consider when you're going out. Have your girlfriend clip your nails or something like that." So it stands to reason that I was excited to learn that he had released a new song. An artist of his calibre and track record was surely going to come up with a banger to listen to in the comfort of a private session on Spotify. "I Don't Mind" is about Usher's girlfriend being a stripper. We've been here before -- Wyclef Jean told us back in 2000 on "Perfect Gentleman" all about how he had to call up his mama to tell her he was in love with a stripper (yo). T-Pain followed and told us in his -- er -- d ...

Dance With My Boy
Huffington Post - about 3 years
William is my hockey player. He's 13 and is navigating the awkward, tenuous web that hangs between childhood and manhood. His face still looks like it has for the past five years or so: soft chin, wide eyes, smooth cheeks. But now there are bushier eyebrows, a smattering of zits, a broadening nose. My boy is changing and since he's my youngest one, it's all the more bittersweet to observe. Having seen his two older brothers leave their baby faces behind, I'm prepared for what lies ahead... but I'm also acutely aware of what is slipping through my fingers. Raising kids has proven to be a constant tug-of-war between wanting to be their mommy forever and aching to see what kind of adults these people will become. Because of the hockey, William and I spend a lot of time in the car together. At least five days a week he has a practice or a game, sometimes close to home and other times not so close. His father, my ex-husband, helps with the driving but there are still several nights a week ...

2 Pistols Preps Comin Back Hard Mixtape
MTV News - over 3 years
By Sowmya Krishnamurthy 2 Pistols is prepping for his return to the game, and this time he aims to come back with a bang. The Florida rapper known for his 2008 hit single "She Got It," is ready to drop the new mixtape aptly titled Comin Back Hard on November 12. On Coming Back Hard, 2P enlists collaborations from the likes of French Montana on "Know That" and Juicy J on "Greedy" as well as Talib Kweli and Jim Jones. "Comin Back Hard is a well-rounded street album; my best work to date," 2P told RapFix of the new project. Back in 2008, "She Got It" catapulted the rapper's career and his debut Death Before Dishonor. Shortly thereafter, 2 Pistols left his record label deal at Universal Republic and then inked a deal with Cash Money Records. Unfortunately, no music came from the latter venture and the rapper and label parted ways. Last year, 2P released the free album Arrogant on his own, which featured the likes of 2 Chainz and Trae Tha Truth. Now fully independent, 2 Pistols ...

Katy Perry Prism, or, the 15 Songs You're Gonna Hear on the Radio Whether You Like It or Not
Huffington Post - over 3 years
Katy Perry's going to have another No. 1 hit this year, that much is true. She might not bat five home runs like Teenage Dream, but from the first listen, Prism presents an iconic line up. She takes the sexiness from her previous works and mixes in maturity that will appeal to a wide audience. That said, Prism as a whole is not as strong of a complete record. As the album progresses, the variety blurs together, and Katy's emotional resonance becomes less apparent. It falls victim to all the better songs fronting the album, with the more wispy songs ending it. "Roar": Even after the umpteenth listen, this track remains anthemic and empowering. The lyrics might be derivative ("I got the eye of the tiger"), but the combined feline/champion motifs compliment her vocals, which you can dig into. "Legendary Lovers": The album's off to an awesome start. "Lovers" deviates from the norm with its mystical concepts and banging drums. Prepare for the chorus to get ...

Game Confirms Signing To Cash Money Records
MTV News - over 3 years
By Sean Lynch After much speculation, Game officially announced he had in fact signed to Cash Money Records via his Twitter account this weekend. The Compton rapper entered a brief free-agency period after his five-album deal with Interscope Records expired following the 2012 release of, Jesus Piece. With his contractual obligations served, all signs pointed the 33-year old rapper in the direction of YMCMB. Details surrounding the deal are minimal at the moment. The only real confirmation is an exchange of 40 characters between Game and Cash Money CEO, Brian “Birdman” Williams. "S/O 2MY@thegame Westcoast makit Official.RICHGANG.YMCMBusine$$," tweeted Williams. Game’s response was a simple warning for the quote-unquote opposition,” @BIRDMAN5STAR time to close the door on these (expletive) !!!! Perry herself wore a short animal print look for the gig. Perry hit the stage again later in the show to play the latest cut off of her "Prism" album, "Walking on Air." The dance track had Perry dancing in a schoolgirl skirt and a white cropped turtleneck tank with a group of backup dancers dressed in all white.
