The 'Dexter' Gang Says Goodbye
Huffington Post - over 3 years
SAN DIEGO — There weren't any kills at the final panel for "Dexter" at Comic-Con, but there were some tears. "Dexter" actresses Jennifer Carpenter and Lauren Velez held back the waterworks as they expressed their gratitude to fans gathered inside the San Diego Convention Center for the pop-culture convention. "You're the reason we show up every day," said Carpenter, who plays Deb, the conflicted sister of loveable serial killer Dexter Morgan. "We want to do right by you because your standards are high, and you deserve good work, so it can't be a wrap until we're all here together, especially for those who waited to be in this room." Many of the "Dexter" devotees had camped out for a chance to see Michael C. Hall and the rest of the cast, who finished production on the eighth and final season of the Showtime drama last week. "Just as you all waited in line and are here for us, we have been here for you, and we are here because of you," said Hall. The panel ...

Jill Knapp: Charisma Carpenter Talks The Lying Game, Charity Work and Surviving Evil
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
Charisma Carpenter is very busy these days, and I had the opportunity to sit down with the actress on her recent trip to NYC. Best known for playing Cordelia Chase on Buffy The Vampire Slayer (the role she tells me was her favorite to play!), Charisma talked openly about her charity involvement, past and present projects, and what's next for her. Fans will be happy to hear that she still keeps in touch with a few friends from her Buffy/ Angel days, including actress Julie Benz, Alyson Hannigan and her husband Alexis Denisof (both on CBS' How I Met Your Mother). More recently, Carpenter has gained more fans and recognition for playing Rebecca Sewell on ABC Family's The Lying Game. Although there is still no word on whether or not show will be renewed for another season, the fans (myself included) remain hopeful. I think what I enjoy the most is... from an actress' point of view... the challenge of keeping her grounded and not becoming over-the-top, diabolical, or mak ...

'Defiance' Tries To Blend TV Series With Video Game
Huffington Post - almost 4 years
LOS ANGELES — Earth is recovering from an apocalyptic event, alien races cooperate warily, a wise-cracking outsider suddenly finds himself shouldering new responsibilities. Yes, the world of "Defiance" features familiar sci-fi touchstones, but it's taken an ambitious approach to how you can experience them: Through both a weekly TV series and an online-only video game. Five years in the making, the joint project is the most high-profile and big-budget attempt at ongoing "transmedia" entertainment, promising characters and storylines that crisscross between the Syfy network show and Trion Worlds game. Set in 2046 on a "terraformed" Earth where humans live alongside seven alien species, the series premiering Monday displays a space Western vibe with bar brawls, interspecies politics and love, plus actors familiar to genre fans like Julie Benz and Jaime Murray. The already-released game, a multiplayer third-person shooter, has plenty of guns to upgrade, quests for ...

Tim Minear, Joss Whedon & The Best Comic-Con Ever
MTV News - almost 4 years
by Tami Katzoff (@tvtamijo) Folks are already planning their trips to San Diego for Comic-Con 2013, but for fans of Joss Whedon, SDCC 2012 will be hard to top. Its highlight, of course, was the reunion panel celebrating the 10th anniversary of “Firefly.” “It was just so great to see all those people,” writer/producer Tim Minear remembers. “I had particularly a lot of fun with Sean [Maher], because we got to kind of roam around outside the convention hall as we were trying to find the place where we were all meeting to go to dinner. And it was just fun to be walking with ‘Simon’ through those giant crowds of people. There were just so many ‘Firefly’ fans there.” Minear still marvels at the show’s ever-growing popularity. “It was truly amazing to have however many thousands of people crammed into that ballroom just to see a panel for a show that had been dead for ten years.” Though SDCC 2012 was Minear’s favorite Comic-Con experience to date, there was one that came a close s ...

Julie Benz Talks TV Death, Undeath And 'Defiance'
MTV News - about 4 years
by Tami Katzoff (@tvtamijo) Hearing actress Julie Benz describe her new TV series conjures memories of a certain beloved show from long ago: A future post-war society struggling to survive. A gritty new frontier. Powerful, complex females who are good with weapons. But it’s not the second coming of “Firefly” – it’s Syfy’s “Defiance,” and it’s got all of the above plus seven alien races and an MMO video game. In “Defiance,” which premieres April 15th (the game launches two weeks prior), Benz plays Amanda Rosewater, newly-appointed mayor of the town for which the show is named. “She’s a bit in over her head as far as her job goes,” says Benz of her character. “Her heart’s in the right place, but that doesn’t always serve her well.” “Defiance” is set in what was formerly St. Louis, eight years after a massive war between humans and aliens. “It’s not a pretty show,” says Benz. “It’s not like I had great clothes and I got lots of hair and make-up.” But it was work that the actre ...
