Grocery Chain Facing Federal Audit: We 'Depend On Immigrants To Survive'
Huffington Post - over 4 years
FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — Two decades ago, Mi Pueblo Food Center began modestly as a small butcher shop run by an illegal immigrant. Now, the supermarket that caters to the Latino immigrant community has grown into a popular chain of 21 stores in California. But with growth and success have come scrutiny from federal immigration authorities and clashes with a union that wants to represent Mi Pueblo's 3,200 workers and is leading a consumer boycott. The predicament is thorny for a family-owned firm that relies almost exclusively on Latino immigrants for its workforce and its customer base. The company is under pressure from an ongoing immigration audit and its decision to use a controversial federal program that screens the eligibility of new employees to work in the United States. "We are feeling what is happening to us in a way that most companies might not, because we are founded by an immigrant and depend on immigr ...

Calif Latino grocery chain fights immigration woes

Calif Latino grocery chain fights immigration woes Associated Press Copyright 2012 Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed. Updated 9:16 a.m., Saturday, October 27, 2012 The Obama administration has increasingly relied on workplace audits as an alternative to immigration raids in which agents with weapons handcuffed workers and placed them in deportation proceedings. Mi Pueblo officials say they were "forced" to use the E-Verify program by immigration officials after the government started conducting an audit of the company's hiring records to ensure Mi Pueblo was not employing illegal immigrants. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials would not confirm the audit, because the agency releases information only if an investigation results in fines or criminal convictions. Driver faces three-year ban
Guardian - over 4 years
A ROW at a farewell barbecue led to a driver being caught over the limit at Creswell. Officers parked in Colliery Road at 11.30pm on 14th August saw a Renault Laguna being driven with its lights off. They followed it and driver Gary McDougall stopped and stumbled as he got out of the car, Chesterfield magistrates heard. “He appeared to be trying to hold on to some takeaway food and he was slurring his words,” said Helen Griffiths, prosecuting. McDougall, 47, failed a roadside breath test and was arrested. He later gave a reading of 68mcgs of alcohol in 100mls of breath - almost double the 35mcgs limit. The father-of-four, now living in Hove, East Sussex, admitted drink-driving - his second conviction for this offence in four years - and driving without insurance. Julie Page, defending, said he and his family relocated to Creswell for a year to support his partner’s mother. “Their children didn’t settle in school so they decided to move back to Hove and had a barbecue to say good ...

Stag arrested after assault
Guardian - over 4 years
A CRESWELL man was arrested on his stag night following a drunken attack on a well-wisher. Victim Laurence Kennel congratulated Daniel Johnson on his impending wedding and was head-butted in the mouth, losing two teeth. The incident took place in Chesterfield town centre on 30th March, when Johnson was so drunk his pals were carrying him. Chesterfield magistrates heard that Johnson, 25, became angry and aggressive after Mr Kennel remarked that he had ‘had a good night’. Mr Kennel asked Johnson to calm down. He was just about to walk away when Johnson broke free from his friends and head-butted him. “Two of my teeth had come out and I saw them on the ground. I picked them up and my mouth was bleeding. His friends were holding him back,” he said. Mr Kennel said losing his teeth had affected his self-confidence. He might need a denture fitted and dental work could take up to a year to complete at a cost of £2000. Johnson told police after he sobered up that he could not recall the ...

Jobless teen stole booze from store
Derbyshire Times - almost 5 years
AN ALFRETON teenager stole alcohol from a shop because he wanted to carry on drinking with his pals, a court heard. Lee Brailsford stuffed bottles of cider inside his coat and walked out of One Stop Store in Nottingham Road, Alfreton, without paying for them. The February 5 theft was recorded on CCTV and he was arrested on March 12 and owned up to the offence, saying he was the worse for drink at the time. Brailsford (19) of Chesterfield Road, Alfreton, admitted theft. He had a previous conviction for shoplifting and he had been cautioned by police for offences of theft and damage. The bench gave him an £88 fine, with £85 costs, and ordered him to pay £21 compensation. “The theft wasn’t detected at the time. By way of explanation, but not excuse, he had been drinking that day and he had run out of money to buy more. “He wanted to carry on drinking with friends and he was stupid enough to go into the shop and steal alcohol,” said Julie Page, for Brailsford, unemployed. She adde ...

Woman caught shoplifting from store
Belper - almost 5 years
A WOMAN could end up back behind bars after being caught stealing from a Ripley supermarket. Michelle Leebetter helped herself to £54.90 worth of meat from Sainsbury’s in Butterley on April 4. Becky Mahon, prosecuting, told magistrates at Chesterfield that Leebetter was quickly apprehended and co-operated with security staff and police. “She only had a small amount of money when she committed the offence,” said her solicitor, Julie Page. “Her previous offences were very much drug-related as she struggled with drug dependency for a number of years. “It culminated in a lengthy prison sentence last June. But she used the time in custody to become drug-free and she maintains that to the current day.” Ms Page conceded that Leebetter’s position was aggravated by the number and similarity of previous offences. She added: “On this occasion theft was committed for gain but not to feed a drug habit.” Leebetter, 32 of Weightman Drive, Giltbrook, admitted theft. Magistrates decided the ...

Atlantic Highlands Herald - almost 5 years
Atlantic Highlands and Shrewsbury, N.J. – Dr. Julie Page, owner of Page Chiropractic Wellness Center, celebrated a major expansion to her practice with a community-wide blood drive and open house recently. The Central Jersey Blood Center ‘Bloodmobile,’ a bus equipped with four beds that can accommodate 4-8 donors at the time, was on location. The event was intended to increase awareness of the positive impact that blood donations have on public health.  “My practice is all about maintaining optimal health and about achieving total body balance,” noted Dr. Page, “plus I’ve always wanted to be involved in community service and thought a blood drive would be a good way to do that.” Twenty-six pints of blood were collected, according to Central Jersey Blood Center Donor Recruitment Manager Holly Thompson. “Dr. Page did a terrific job. When someone contacts the CJBC and agrees to chair a blood drive, we make abundantly clear that the responsibility is to provide donors. Dr. Page took that m ...
