IVANOV *** out of **** CHECKERS ** 1/2 out of **** IVANOV *** out of **** CLASSIC STAGE COMPANY Theater is so ephemeral: see the same show with the same cast one week earlier or one week later or with a different audience and you might well have three subtly different reactions. Not enough is made of when a show is seen. So let's be clear, especially with the havoc that Sandy caused in the theater world. (Which of course doesn't compare to the very real havoc in people's lives.) Obviously performances and rehearsals were lost, just as many shows of the fall prepared to open. Going to see Ivanov was one of the first times I'd left my Long Island City neighborhood since the storm and despite an hour on the train and then walking 30 or so blocks to get there, it was very welcome indeed. But the cast was forced to launch into critics' performances from a standstill. (With so many dates cancelled, it was impossible to reschedule every critic to the new opening dates.) S ...

Law & Order SVU has Criminal Intent in Season 14
Boom Tron - over 4 years
NBC is keeping it in the Law & Order family when SVU will get a visit from detective Alexandra Eames in its upcoming 14th season. That’s right, O.G. Law & Order: Criminal Intent (the second spin-off from Law & Order; SVU was the first) cast member Kathryn Erbe returns to the franchise, now serving as part of a joint City/Federal Homeland Security Task Force, after having served 10 years on the Intent team. Erbe and the SVU gang cross paths while investigating a sex trafficking ring that might have a connection to terrorists. Speaking of the SVU gang, it’s been a pretty big off-season for the show to say the least. Criminal Minds favorite Paget Brewster jumped ship from CBS and will appear in the new season premiere, and we also know that Chuck and Firefly favorite – a man they called Jayne – Adam Baldwin will be, at least temporarily, sitting in Captain Cragen’s chair. Tvline adds that while Erbe is currently scheduled for a one episode appearance (the date of which h ...

The Brain: Sewing Audio to Video, and Rubber Hands Onto People
Discover Magazine - about 5 years
i I don’t usually stream Netflix onto my television to probe the
inner workings of my mind, but it had that effect not long ago.
While I was catching an old episode of Law & Order: Criminal Intent, the actors’ voices lagged a fraction of a second behind the movement
of their mouths, making me so disoriented it completely ruined the show. Soon my irritation turned to puzzlement, and some self-observation allowed me to track my frustration to a precise source. I didn’t care that the ominous soundtrack rose half a second late when Vincent D’Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe crept into the subway tunnel where they
were about to find a body. I didn’t care that the show’s trademark duh-dung! sound marking a new scene was still duh-dung-ing after the scene started. It was only when people talked that I went batty. I would watch the characters speak, and then I’d switch to listening to them, and then I’d watch them speak again. I just couldn’t meld the two streams of information in my head. T ...
