Hype: The Social & Financial Currency of Technology
Huffington Post - 9 months
By Kevin Allen, Executive Strategy Director, Publicis Chemistry Oculus Rift, Apple Watch, Tesla. Iridium, Apple Newton, Segway, Second Life. Hype is both the social and financial currency of technology. Always has been, always will be. Only in the tech sector does everything you do have to be the Next Big Thing. Because if it isn’t, then nobody will invest in your idea. Here’s a very personal story. Before Amazon was even a gleam in Jeff Bezos’ eye, I was part of a team that thought data-driven online home shopping would be the Next Big Thing and we’d be the ones to change the face of the High Street forever. Clearly it didn’t work, but equally what Amazon has achieved shows our problem wasn’t the idea itself. We failed and Amazon succeeded because they understood what a new brand or product really has to do to get consumers to make a significant behavioural change. They bridged the gap between hype and reality. Minimise the perceived risk. Amazon started with boo ...

Is This for Real?
Huffington Post - about 1 year
Not only is storytelling a genuine art form, it's a lot harder than one might think. It requires skill with vocabulary, phrasing and a deep appreciation of the musicality of one's language. It requires a sense of drama, of make believe and, above all else, a deeply personal kind of buy-in from one's audience. How else can one be sure that an audience will carefully listen to (and empathize with) Tevye's talks with God? How else can one suspend disbelief long enough to give Mama Rose credit for having another one of her ludicrous dreams about a dancing cow hitting the big time in vaudeville with her daughters? How else can Peter Pan get an audience of 1,500 people to clap their hands as a way of proving to Tinker Bell that they really, really do believe in fairies? Of course, storytelling can accommodate more than one viewpoint. There can be a single narrator, or two characters trying to justify their individual points of view. Some shows depend on spectacle and magic tr ...

Ohio restaurant killer was sent to anger class
Fox News - about 4 years
Newly released records show an Ohio man who fatally shot his estranged wife and their daughters had been ordered by his employer to take an anger management class for making threats to kill his family. The records also show Kevin Allen had blocked incoming calls to his wife's and daughters' phones and bought a machine to block cellphone calls in the days before the April 12 shooting. Records obtained by The Associated Press on Wednesday also show Allen told his family at a Cracker Barrel restaurant just outside Cleveland he was going to take them home and kill them. Minutes later Allen killed his wife and one of their daughters and severely wounded the other daughter, who died a month later. Police killed Allen outside the restaurant. ___ Andrew Welsh-Huggins can be reached on Twitter at https://twitter.com/awhcolumbus

Jamie Davis Smith: Why -- and Where -- I'm Shopping Locally This Season
Huffington Post - about 4 years
This time of year the pull of consumerism is strong for all parents, but the pull is especially strong in my household of five where we celebrate Chanukah, Christmas and a child's birthday in a three-week period. Instead of going to big box stores or the internet to do our shopping, this year I am shopping locally for all of my children's gifts. By shopping locally I am not only helping my sanity by staying away from overcrowded malls and avoiding getting sucked into reviewing an endless cycle of very similar toys, I am also helping to ensure that my community remains vibrant and offers an array of choices. Shopping locally has an enormous impact on the local economy. According to the 3/50 project, $42.6 billion could be generated for the economy if just half of the employed population spent $50 in three locally owned business per month. For every $100 spent locally, $68 returns to the local economy. If the same $100 were spent online, nothing returns to the local ...

Josh Turner Visits Scene of Ohio Cracker Barrel Tragedy
GAC - Great American Country - over 4 years
John Turner photo courtesy of UMG Nashville. Josh Turner played a special four-song set at a Cracker Barrel in Brooklyn, Ohio on Monday to help bring the community back together after Katherina Allen and her two daughters, Kerri and Kayla, were killed by their husband and father, Kevin Allen, at the restaurant. Katherina and Kerri died at the scene while Kayla passed away a month later. “This is not my typical day,” Josh said. “I don’t have a band with me, and I’m not here to sell records. God gave me a talent to sing and provide an opportunity to bring a community together.” Nearly a thousand people gathered around a portable stage for Josh’s performance. Cracker Barrel, Josh’s current tour sponsor, brought him to town to boost morale of both the town and the Cracker Barrel staff. He spent hours after his set signing autographs and meeting with fans. “This community has been through a lot,” Heather MacDonald, DVL Public Relations & Advertising executive working with Crac ...

Free rent if you live here
Financial Post - almost 5 years
BOSTON — Kevin Kaminski and Maureen Clarke rented their dream home last November: A pre-Victorian farmhouse in Hamilton, Massachusetts, with a sun-drenched southern exposure, fireplaces in every room, original hardwood floors and more than an acre of land adjacent to a wooded park. The couple’s landlord, the state of Massachusetts, threw in irresistible rent terms on the 25-year lease: $0. The hitch? Dodge House, as it is known, needed a total renovation. Boarded up for more than a decade, it had wasps in its walls, a decaying septic tank and rotting asbestos floor tiles. Over the last six months, Kaminski has worked full-time and spent some $25,000 to make the house habitable. ‘This is a real preservation tool’ Kaminski and Clarke are “resident curators” in a unique public-private partnership program operating in a handful of East Coast states — Massachusetts, Maryland, Delaware, and Connecticut — and selected municipalities nationwide. The programs lease publicly-owned hi ...

A Sellout Crowd at Fundraiser for Shooting Victim
Strongsville Patch - almost 5 years
Cleats was filled to overflowing Thursday night for a fundraiser for Kayla Allen, the only surviving victim on the April 12 shooting at Cracker Barrel in Brooklyn. "This is incredible," said Mark Karr, a friend of the Allen family and the event organizer. "So many people have wanted to help." All 150 tickets were sold, which means $1,500 for the Kayla Allen Benefit Fund -- plus all the money dozens of donated raffle baskets raised. Kayla, 10, remains in critical condition at MetroHealth Medical Center. She had been improving and was listed in fair condition Wednesday before undergoing emergency surgery. Karr declined to talk about Kayla's condition Thursday night, but a Facebook page set up for her fund says she is sedated and it will be several days before her condition is known. "There's nothing we can do but pray," he said. Karr grew up on Shurmer Road across from Kate Allen and, like Kate, bought his parents' home. He said his daughter, Rebecca, and Kayla are best ...

Shooting Victim is in Critical Condition Again
Strongsville Patch - almost 5 years
The lone survivor of the Cracker Barrel shooting has suffered a setback and is in critical condition again -- a day after her condition had been upgraded to "fair." Friends and family are asking for prayers for Kayla Allen, 10, on the Kayla Allen Benefit Fund Facebook page. Details are sketchy, but posts on the page last night and this morning indicate Kayla had emergency surgery yesterday. Kayla's mother, Kate, and sister, Kerri, 10, were killed in Kevin Allen's shooting rampage April 12 at the Brooklyn restaurant.  The 911 call Kate made to police moments before the shooting indicates she had told her husband she was leaving him. Kevin Allen was shot and killed by police as he left the restaurant. Family members said last week that Kayla was responsive and could communicate by squeezing hands and giving a "thumbs up." A benefit for her at Cleats in Strongsville tonight has sold out.

Kayla Allen Showing Small Improvements, Family Says
Strongsville Patch - almost 5 years
Kayla Allen is showing slight improvement from her life-threatening injuries, her uncle said, although he cautioned that there is a very long road to recovery. "I think every day the promise of recovery is a little greater," said Carl Jindra, Kayla's uncle. Kayla, 10 and a fifth-grader at Chapman Elementary School, has been in critical condition at MetroHealth Medical Center since April 12, when her father, Kevin Allen, went on a shooting rampage at the Cracker Barrel restaurant in Brooklyn, killing her mother, Kate, 42, and sister, Kerri, who had just turned 10. Carl Jindra, who is Kate's brother, and his wife, Michelle, expressed a small amount of optimism regarding Kayla's injuries. "They're waking her up a little bit," Michelle said shortly before a memorial service Kate and Kerri Allen Thursday morning. "She's following some commands." Still, the prognosis is "day to day," Michelle said. About 300 people gathered in Medina to remember the mother and daughter Thur ...
