Mississippi Charter Schools Get A Second Chance
Huffington Post - over 4 years
This piece comes to us courtesy of The Hechinger Report's HechingerEd blog. Republicans in Mississippi intend to fight for charter schools during the 2013 legislative session, renewing a contentious battle from last year’s session. At a Mississippi Economic Council gathering in late October, Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves vowed to support school choice legislation that would create more avenues for charter schools to open in the state, the Memphis Commercial Appeal reported. Proponents say there may be a better chance of passing legislation in 2013 because the state’s failing school system has received increased attention from the media, and lawmakers came close to passing a law during last year’s legislative session. Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant has touted charter schools in neighboring Arkansas and Louisiana as models of success, and said charter schools are “desperately needed,” especially in failing districts. More Than $560K Raised at Share NJ 5K
The Caldewells Patch - over 4 years
Some ran to honor those they lost. Others ran to give thanks for a second chance at life. Nearly 5,000 people, united by their support for organ and tissue donation, gathered Sunday for the Second Annual Share NJ 5K Race to Save Lives through Organ & Tissue Donation. The event, with record turnout, raised more than $560,000 to provide education, outreach and family support. Check out photos from the event. More than 245 teams participated, most connected through the story of an organ donor or recipient—or someone on the waiting list.  “I am here today because there are no words to thank the person who saved my life and allowed me to continue to be a teacher, a mom, a wife and a friend,” said Maria Feeney, a 39-year-old heart recipient from Morris Plains whose team was called 'Heart & Soul.' “The only obligation to be on my team was to be a registered organ donor. We need to raise awareness.” The number of participants increased 35 percent from last year's 5K. ...

Each year the committee chooses an honored veteran, parade grand marshal, Chief of Staff and keynote speaker to remind everyone just how important and special to all of us are these men and women who served our country in wartime. The 2011 Honored Veteran was Dominick  L. “Mickey” Morazzini, 86, a World War II Navy Veteran who served from 1943-1946 as a Seaman First Class. The 2012 Grand Marshal James White; Chief of Staff Vito DeVito who earned a Purple Heart while serving in the Third Army under General George S. Patton. At their March 28 meeting the committee members talked about having not one, but several WWII veterans to honor and give them the recognition they deserve. Meanwhile the remainder of the collective worked with singer-songwriters Susanna Hoffs and Linda Perry on two more albums. Gilbert continued to work in television and movie soundtracks, studio sessions, production, and eventually released his first solo album Thud (1995) as well as partially reforming Giraffe to perform the Genesis double album The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway at Progfest '94. Gilbert's manager sent a copy of the recording to Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford who were searching for a new Genesis front man to replace Phil Collins. Coincidentally, shortly after Kevin's death, his manager, Jon Rubin of The Rubinoos, was contacted by Genesis's management to arrange an audition. Several albums of Gilbert's music have been released posthumously, beginning in 1999 with the live album Kevin Gilbert & Thud - Live at the Troubadour (consisting primarily of songs from Thud) and a compilation of Giraffe material that he had been working on.
